It’s molting time again!

Molting is when your bird sheds old worn out feathers to make space for new fresh ones. This happens mainly after a breeding season, but can happen more than once a year. You should also know that this puts a lot of stress on your bird, so you should be there for them during this tough time.

Why does molting happen?
Birds can’t carry around the same old feathers forever, they need new ones. Just like we need haircuts. Getting a new fresh feathery look isn’t just for looking attractive for the next breeding season. It also helps to keep them warm, help them fly better and keep them safe. To birds, feathers are their prized possession and molting helps keep the skin and feathers healthy. In the wild feathers take an immense amount of damage from all the elements. In pet birds, this do not happen so severely, but some birds experience stress or malnutrition which create bad feather health. Birds that are in their cage most of the time damage their feathers against the cage bars, others damage their feathers when falling off a perch or flying from point A to B.

Be careful to not associate plucking with preening or molting, birds clean, align and remove some feathers when preening. If a feather is lost on one side of your bird, the same feather on the opposite side will also be lost, this allows the bird to stay balanced for flying. New feathers will look like pins or short quills. It is important to know that the bird needs to be healthy in order to have a successful molt. This means that a high quality pellet based diet with chop on the side must be followed at all times. (Different species have different things they should or shouldn’t eat)

The Eclectus Diet
(Please note that none of us are avian vets or qualified experts - we are simply stating a personal opinion of what has worked for us based on our own experience and research).

Ever wondered why an Eclectus parrot's diet differs from all other parrot species?

In the wild, the Eclectus species are canopy feeders. They eat many fruits, nuts and seeds from rainforest plants. Eclectus parrots seem to be particularly susceptible to illness due to incorrect diet and malnutrition.
It is important to offer similar diets when an Eclectus is kept in captivity as their digestive system differs to those of our common household parrot species. They can develop a Vitamin A deficiency very quickly if they are not fed enough fresh foods that contain sufficient Vitamin A and beta carotene.

If the incorrect foods are fed, they will end up with medical illnesses, vitamin deficiency, possible blockages and eventually lead to feather loss, plucking, skin conditions and even death.

The Eclectus diet should consist of 80% soft foods, consisting of fresh veg and fruit, including cooking mix, 15% proteins (not meat, fish or eggs, as it has been suggested by researchers that animal protein can lead to cholesterol build-up) and 5% sprouts, high quality pellets and limited quantity of healthy seeds, like pumpkin seeds.

The pellets should not be coloured pellets and should be that of a natural base ingredients. Brands such as Tops with non-GMO, organic ingredients are fantastic for this sensitive species, but we know it's not always affordable for every owner, and our opinion is that it is good to feed a small amount of formulated food to "cover all the bases", because it is incredibly difficult to make sure your bird gets in all the correct - and wide range - of nutrients as it would in the wild, if you're only feeding fresh food.

Eclectus parrots have a tendency to develop vitamin deficiencies, that is why it is highly important to provide a natural and balanced diet at least 2 to 3 times a day.
