SHAR-PEI'S WRINKLE AND SECRETS
A mutation responsible for the characteristically wrinkly skin of Shar-Peis may also make them sick, according to a new study.Originally from China, Shar-Pei puppies have seduced the Western world with their wrinkles, encouraging breeders to select for dogs that would keep the trait as adults. (In the original breed, puppies lose most of their wrinkled skin as they grow.) Underlying the breed's thick and extensive crinkles and furrows is the accumulation of a common skin component called hyaluronic acid (HA). Also characteristic of the breed is a disorder known as Familial Shar-Pei Fever (FSF), which causes apparently unprovoked yet recurrent episodes of fever and inflammation.

Cleft palate in a neonatal calf 🐮
Examination of a newborn Charolais calf revealed the presence of a severe cleft palate. No other abnormalities were noted.
Cleft palate occurs early in the fetus development cycle when the palatine shelves fail to fuse.
The possible cause may be genetic, teratogenic or nutritional in origin.
Affected calves have obvious difficulty in drinking & swallowing, with milk often seen running directly from the nares & out through the nostrils. Aspiration pneumonia is a common sequel.
Surgery is possible but in calves, often not successful.

Tetanus in Dogs
🔄 🤝
How do dogs get tetanus?
Tetanus is typically caused by C. tetani bacteria entering a wound. Spores of C. tetani are widespread in the environment; these spores are shed in animal f***s and can survive for years in dirt and dust. C. tetani does not cause any problems in an animal’s gastrointestinal tract or on the skin, but when it enters a low-oxygen environment (such as inside of a puncture wound) it can begin to rapidly reproduce and produce a toxin known as tetanospasmin. This toxin enters the surrounding nerves; from there, it can travel up the nerves to the spinal cord and the brain.
Signs of tetanus most commonly develop 5-10 days after the initial wound occurred. In some cases, however, signs may be seen as early as three days after exposure or as late as three weeks after exposure.
What are the clinical signs of tetanus?
In dogs, tetanus can take two forms:
Localized tetanus is the more common form of tetanus that occurs in pets. Affected dogs develop muscle rigidity (stiffness) in the limb or muscles closest to the wound. In addition to muscle rigidity, muscle tremors may also be seen. Localized tetanus, can progress to generalized tetanus with time, although this does not always occur.
Generalized tetanus, affects widespread areas of the body. Affected animals may walk stiffly, with the tail held up or extended out behind them. These animals may become so stiff that they are unable to bend their legs to stand; many develop what is referred to as a 'sawhorse' stance, with all four legs held in rigid extension.

THE SECRET OF THE PRICKLY CAT P***S
🔃 🤝
There are 120-150 hard protrusions extending in the opposite direction on the p***ses of cats. Their length is about 1 millimeter. These reverse protrusions trigger the female cat's va**na and initiate ovulation. Exactly for this reason, the first male that a female cat mates with may not be the father of the kittens. Because the first male initiates ovulation, one (or more) of the next lucky males will have the honor of fathering the offspring. Of course, this does not have to be this way in all cases, and studies have not been able to show that mating order is directly related to paternity. It is thought that these reverse structures in the p***s also clean the s***m from the previous males in the female's va**na, so that the males with this feature can continue their lineage more easily, so cats evolved in this direction. In other words, each incoming man is specialized to clean the s***m of the men before him as much as possible. When the male cat pulls its barbed p***s out of the female cat's va**na, it hurts the female and causes a short-term brawl. In order for ovulation to begin, the female's va**na must be stimulated in this way (provoked ovulation). Ovulation occurs 24-48 hours after mating.

PARAMPHISTOMUM
Paramphistomum is a genus of parasitic flatworms belonging to the digenetic trematodes. It includes flukes which are mostly parasitising livestock ruminants, as well as some wild mammals. They are responsible for the serious disease called paramphistomiasis, also known as amphistomosis, especially in cattle and sheep. Its symptoms include profuse diarrhoea, anaemia, lethargy, and often result in death if untreated. They are found throughout the world, and most abundantly in livestock farming regions such as Australia, Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe, and Russia.

How to place a catheter in a rabbit: an act that can save a life? 👨‍⚕️🐰

In rabbits, as in domestic carnivores, access to an intravenous line is an essential element during anaesthesia, but it can also be very useful during hospitalisation or specific medical treatments (IV antibiotics, chemotherapy, etc). 💉

Although simple, the placement of a catheter is not systematically performed in lagomorphs, although it should be automatic as soon as the patient is sedated for a small procedure or anesthetized for even the simplest surgery. 🤓
Whether it is to administer fluids, limit hypotension or hypoperfusion intraoperatively, or provide direct access in an emergency, there are several reasons to do so.☝️

Here is a short video showing how this procedure is performed on the marginal ear vein in rabbits. 🎥
Quite simple!...well with a little practice! 😉

This procedure should of course only be performed by a veterinarian or qualified technicians under clean conditions and with sterile equipment to avoid phlebitis and necrosis of the ear that can occur if done inappropriately.👩‍⚕️🩺

Do you frequently place a venous line in your patients with large ears? 🤓🐰

poultryvet_farm Some case have similar lesion of tracheal plaquae. Could be wet pox, mycotoxin, Aspergillosis or mycoplasmosis. This photo is pullet layer on 11 Weeks of age. I think this lesion is Aspergillosis because yellow caseous plaques adherent to the mucosal surface of the tracheas were observed grossly, the plaques occluded the lumina, and the surrounding tracheal walls were reddened and nothing other lesion just only it.

CUTEREBRA BOTFLY LARVA 😯

The kitten, in North Carolina, was just eight-weeks old when it started suffering from chronic nasal discharge.

Its owner took it to the Animal Care East veterinary hospital in Winterville, where a vet used forceps to study the cat’s nose.

Amazingly, the vet discovered that the nasal discharge was caused by a huge Cuterebra botfly larva, which was living in the kitten’s nostril.

DO PORCUPINE'S QUILLS GROW BACK?

If you hear someone mention a porcupine, you probably instantly think of the many prickly spines that famously coat the sizable rodents' bodies. The porcupine realm is made up of about 23 species -- all spiky. Although these spikes -- or quills -- are totally different than standard hairs in many ways, they too grow back.
Protective Purposes

Porcupine quills serve important protective functions to the animals. When porcupines encounter trouble, they protect themselves via shoving their painful and pointy quills into the direction of their opponents. Scared porcupines' quills immediately protrude, although they're normally flattened against them. It isn't hard for the quills to loosen themselves from the porcupines and plant themselves directly and firmly into the skin of their enemies -- ouch. Although porcupines can push their quills onto their rivals, they don't have the ability to toss them their way.

Quills Grow Back
Luckily for porcupines, their quills do indeed grow back after falling off. Shedding is a normal process of porcupine quills, just as it is with standard hair. "Successor" quills often start emerging in the span of a mere few days after the earlier ones come out. New quills grow pretty rapidly. Until the quills are back to their full length, they usually grow approximately 1 millimeter for each couple of days. New and old quills constantly mingle on porcupines' bodies, which is why their lengths are rarely exactly the same. When developed quills come out of porcupines, bleeding typically doesn't take place. Their roots are already shut at that point. The whole growth process generally takes several weeks

Numbers of Quills
Porcupines' quills appear almost all over their bodies, from their tails to their backs. The quills do not cover their lower portions. Porcupines are equipped with an abundance of the tough hairs -- often at least 30,000 of them. Quills often differ based on where specifically they're situated on porcupines' physiques. Thin and somewhat frail quills are usually seen by their heads. Their tails, on the other hand, are usually home to lengthier, broader quills.♥️

How Do Peacocks Mate? ♥️

🦚Male and female peacocks!

There are few birds with as dominant of a physical display as the male peafowl, or peacock. Their colorful tails wow visitors from all around the world at zoos, but if you’re trying to get a peacock to mate with a female peafowl, or peahen, it’s about more than just a big display.

Peafowl mate the same way as most other birds, but they have their own unique mating rituals. Whether you’re just interested in these rituals or you’re trying to breed peafowl yourself, we break down everything that you need to know here!

🦚How Do Peacocks Mate?

Despite all the misconceptions out there, peafowl mate the same way as many other birds. In short, both peafowl align their cloaca, and the peacock’s s***m is transferred to his partner.

Once the s***m enters the peahen, it travels up her uterus and fertilizes the egg. It’s much the same way that human reproduction works, but a fertilized egg comes out instead of a live baby!

🦚Do Peacocks Mate Through Their Eyes?

There’s no scientific basis for this idea whatsoever. Peacocks do not mate through their eyes; they mate the same way as every other bird out there.
We’re not quite sure where this rumor started, but we can say with 100% certainty that it is completely false.

🦚How Do Peacocks Act When Choosing a Mate?

When male peacocks try to attract a mate, it’s all about using their tail feathers, also known as their train. A male peacock shows off his train to a female and hopes that she finds it attractive enough to want to mate with him.

Peahens decide which trains of the peacocks look most attractive, and this is by far the largest determining factor for which one they’re going to mate with.

🦚How Long Is a Peacock Pregnant?

Birds don’t get pregnant like mammals. Peahens will generally lay their fertilized eggs in the spring. They mate anywhere from late February to early August, so there’s a long period where they’re developing the eggs.

However, once they start laying eggs, they’ll lay them all over a 6- to 10-day period and incubate them for about 30 days. After the incubation period, the baby peafowl will hatch and start their lives!

🦚Common Peacock Mating Rituals

The most common mating ritual of the peacock is the displaying of his train. Males spread their tails in a fan shape and strut back and forth while shaking their feathers to produce a rattling noise.

This gets the peahen’s attention, and then it’s up to her to pick her favorite male. Typically, a peahen will walk through the territory of several males and examine both the display and colors before selecting a mate.

🦚In the wild, it’s not uncommon for a single male to have multiple mates in the same breeding season while others don’t get any.

Which type of cat Breed ?😻
Based purely on appearances, Garfield looks a bit like a Persian Tabby. Persian Tabbies have a very distinct appearance, which is very similar to the cartoon cat Garfield. In fact, Persian Tabbies are sometimes called the “Garfield Cat” because of their appearance.

This gorgeous breed is known for its orange coat, fluffy tail, large body, and squished-up face. These cats are most known for the M-shaped marking on their forehead, but many have these M-shaped markings all throughout their fur too.

If you compare Garfield to the Persian Tabby, you will see a lot of similarities. Most notably, Garfield is orange and large. He also has a squished-up face and M-like markings all throughout his body.

Kangaroos are marsupials that belong to the taxonomic family Macropodidae. They are easily recognized by their large legs and ability to move by jumping.

Kangaroos have mammary glands that perform the same function as breasts in other mammals. These glands are located inside of their pouches. Infant kangaroos nurse inside their mothers' pouches until they are ready to emerge.♥️

5 Steps to Save Your Dog's Teeth🐶😍
🚩Never use human toothpaste !!!

Q: Why Dog Teeth Cleaning and Brushing is Crucial ?

Dental disease is a common problem in our pets and can lead to a variety of health issues. It is estimated that 80% of dogs over the age of 3 years suffer from some degree of periodontal disease. Every time a dog with periodontal disease chews, bacteria are showered into the bloodstream, which then lodges in the kidneys, liver, and heart causing damage and disease. Additionally, fractured teeth, feline resorptive lesions, and tooth root abscesses are painful and can act as a constant source of discomfort for your dog. Here are a few steps you can take to help maintain the dental health of your dog.

🟥. Start Brushing Your Dog's Teeth Early
Start brushing your pet’s teeth when they are still young as part of a routine grooming protocol. This acclimates puppies to the strange sensation of having their teeth brushed so they learn it is nothing to be afraid of. This is also a great way to spend time with your dog while improving his or her health. However, don't despair if you and your older dog have yet to establish a tooth brushing routine…

🟥. Make Dog Tooth Brushing a Regular Affair
Every day is best, but if that isn’t possible aim for multiple times a week. Schedule the brushing sessions at the same time and place every day, and make it fun. This way your dog won't consider it a chore; he may even start reminding you when it's time to whip out the dog tooth brush.

You'll want to start with baby steps, regardless of your dog's age. Start by letting your dog lick a flavored toothpaste made specifically for pets from your finger or the toothbrush, and then brush a few teeth. (Ed. note: Never use human toothpaste, as it can be toxic to your pet if allowed to ingest too much.) When you are finished with the tooth brushing session, use a dog treat as a reward for tolerating the experience. With time and practice, your dog will eventually allow you to brush his whole mouth. However, do keep in mind that you only have to brush the outside surfaces of the dog teeth. The tongue will keep the inside surfaces clean.

🟥. Buy Products for oral hygiene
There are many products to help supplement your dog brushing routine such as treats, chews and oral rinses. With all oral hygiene products including dog toothpaste, look for the veterinary aspects!

🟥. Use Dental Dog Food Between Brushings
Diets formulated to address dental heath are a great option to control plaque and tartar between dog/cat dental cleanings. These products are larger than a normal kibble and have a fibrous texture that act like little sponges to wrap around the teeth and help remove plaque bacteria, which can cause gum disease and tartar, from the teeth. There are over the counter as well as prescription options to choose from. However, discuss a diet change with your veterinarian to ensure you are choosing a dog food that is complete and balanced to include all the necessary nutrients your dog needs.

🟥. Schedule Regular Dental Checkups with Your Vet
You should schedule an annual exam for your dog every year with your veterinarian to assess your pet’s overall health status. During this visit you can discuss any concerns and determine if your dog needs a dental cleaning. Just like people, even with daily brushing our pets will need a more thorough teeth cleaning at some point. Rather than wait for a problem to develop, it is best to perform a dog teeth cleaning when only mild gingivitis and/or tartar are present. This will maintain good dental health and prevent disease before it becomes a problem … which in turn helps you save money and keep your pet healthy!

Ectopic cilia in pups!👁️

A cilium is a hair, and ectopic means growing out of place. Ectopic cilia are one or several hairs that grow abnormally through the conjunctiva and come into contact with the surface of the eye (cornea). These abnormal hairs most commonly occur on the upper middle eyelid.

"The offending hairs rub against the cornea, often causing intense pain and corneal ulcers."
The offending hairs rub against the cornea, often causing intense pain and corneal ulcers. These abnormal hairs must be removed or serious damage to the eye may occur. Ectopic cilia are most commonly diagnosed in young dogs and are very rare in cats.

Ectopic cilia are not the same as distichia. Distichia are extra eyelashes that, due to abnormal conformation, rub against the cornea. Some breeds such as the American Cocker Spaniel normally have long eyelashes that may contact the cornea but cause no problem. When distichia causes corneal irritation or discomfort, they should be surgically removed.

Q: What are the clinical signs of ectopic cilia?

The clinical signs associated with ectopic cilia are those associated with corneal ulcers and eye pain. The eye and conjunctivae may appear reddened or inflamed with excessive tearing or discharge.

"The dog rubs or paws at the eye because it is uncomfortable."
The dog often rubs or paws at the eye because it is uncomfortable. Affected dogs often hold the eye tightly closed and blink uncontrollably (blepharospasm).

Q: Are certain breeds more likely to have ectopic cilia?

Certain breeds have a higher incidence of ectopic cilia than others. Some of these breeds include:

Shih Tzu
Lhasa Apso
Boxer Dogs
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Golden Retrievers
Flat-Coated Retrievers
English Bulldog
Boston Terrier
Pug
Pekingese
Collies

Q: How are ectopic cilia diagnosed?

Diagnosis is usually made on physical examination. Some dogs will require topical anesthetics or sedatives to relieve the intense discomfort and allow a thorough examination of the tissues surrounding the eye (eyelids, eyelashes, tear ducts, third eyelid, etc.). Corneal staining will be performed to assess the cornea and to determine if any corneal ulceration is present.
