Blue and Gold Macaws can have various color mutations like Opaline, Silver (Opaline-Blue), and Golden. These mutations are produced by combining specific genes over multiple generations. Opaline causes a reduction in melanin and enhances psittacin pigments, leading to distinct colors.
Silver macaws result from a combination of Blue and Opaline mutations and require a minimum of two generations to achieve. If the father is also Opaline Blue, it takes four generations or F4 and around 12-15 years to breed. Opaline mutations are sex-linked, with females (visuals) always displaying the pattern, while males need two gene copies to be visuals. Some males with one copy may show subtle differences.
These mutations are sometimes observed in wild macaw flocks in South America. The Opaline Blue and Gold Macaw is also known as the pied, yellow, or golden (sunshine) macaw, which can lead to some confusion.

Introducing the Golden Jewel - a Lutino Macaw 🦜! This isn't a hybrid but a natural mutation of the Blue and Yellow Macaw family. Lutino is a term for birds with this unique yellow pigmentation, known as xanthochromism. Unlike the typical Blue & Gold Macaw with black features and vibrant blue and gold feathers, Lutino Macaws have bright yellow-orange feathers and white features, including a white beak, tongue, legs, and claws. Their eyes are a lovely pinkish-grey instead of black.🌟💛
