Teaching your pooch tricks is a fun and enriching activity that can strengthen your connection and their problem solving muscles. Here’s how I taught Charlie to play dead: 1. Teach him to lay down first. 2. Lure him to roll onto his side with a treat, then mark and reward…repeat this A LOT! 3. Lure his head to lay flat on the floor, then mark and reward. 4. Introduce “bang bang” verbal command and shooting hand gesture before luring into dead position. 5. Start phasing out the lure by doing it further away from his face and pausing for a while after saying/doing the command to allow him to have a think and the opportunity to offer the behaviour without the lure. 6. Have patience! You got this!

Just to name a few things to consider when thinking about socialising you’re dog! Essentially, socialisation is the process of providing your dog with positive experiences with things that you want your dog to be ok with. Socialisation will be different in every household depending on your goals and your dogs needs. I suggest writing a list of things that you want to be able to do with your dog and what you want your dog to be ok with. Next establish your dogs threshold with each of these things, and find out what is most reinforcing for your dog (different treats, toys, play, scratches ect). Reinforce your dog within their threshold and slowly expand it as your dog becomes more confident. Comment below how you go!
