Sweet Etta…. where do we even begin? 🥹

Etta was found as a stray when our team was out looking for another dog. We couldn’t leave our gal behind, so she became part of the MAI family. Etta is the most loviest, cuddliest, hippo-looking, sweetheart of them all. She stares at you with those big brown eyes and you quickly fall in love. Not only is Etta literally the cutest thing we have ever seen… but she also is the most amazing girl ever!!!

Etta is always big chillin. Brisk walk? Sure. Hiking? No thank you. Sunbathing? Yes. Getting dirty at a lake? No thanks. If you are looking for a buddy to watch TV and don’t mind the her snores, Etta is your gal!

Etta enjoys living with other dogs that respect her space. Etta is a very strict no cats. Etta has some separation anxiety when her fosters leave. If you work from home, Etta promises she will be quiet during those Zoom calls!

Etta is approx 4 years old, 45 pounds (petite queen) spayed, microchipped, and up to date on all her vaccines.

Chickpea had a mini photoshoot while we wait for our turn at The PAWS Clinic!

Chickpea is a young adult female husky. She is the SWEETEST girl ever! She loves to play with other dogs. She loves to play with toys and walks great on a leash! She loves to play fetch and chew on her bones. Of course she talks to you in typical husky fashion and demands attention with an adorable “roooooo”. Chickpea is great with children of all ages! She is 100% potty trained as well as crate trained. She of course loves playing in the snow!

Say NO 🚫 to puppy mill pet stores, and YES 🤍 to a humane pet store ban in Detroit.

Detroit currently has 0 pet stores, so now is the time to press for the adoption of a ban. If a store were to open in the meantime, puppy mill investors pay a lot of money to become litigious.

Currently, Detroit Animal Control is euthanizing 35-45% of dogs that enter their facility. There is an overpopulation epidemic in Detroit.
From intake to euthanasia, Detroit pays $150 for each euthanasia, resulting in costs exceeding $300,000 in one calendar year.

Puppy mill retail stores do not require spay and neuter, and purchased dogs can become hobby breeder kits quite easily, which will decrease breed standard rapidly and increase the population exponentially.

🍓 Meet Miss Strawberry Lane 🍓

💝 Strawberry is a sweet and mellow 7-month-old pitty mix with a heart full of love!

🔎 She is always ready to go where her humans go. She thinks everything is so interesting & is super curious.

🧸 She’s the ultimate cuddle bug, happiest when she’s snuggled up on the couch or laying in bed by your side.

🐶 She loves playing & cuddling with her foster brother.

🥾 She has an easygoing nature, is incredibly smart (sometimes too smart) and is already a superstar on walks! She would be the perfect companion for adventures, whether it’s hanging out at the local pet friendly bar, on car rides, or a walk in the woods.

She has some barrier reactivity (like barking/ whining when she’s behind a gate or door), with a little guidance and patience, she’s learning to manage it like a pro. She’s eager to please but ultimately just wants to be where her people are. For this reason, she is not crated but she does absolutely wonderful out of the crate when her foster parents are not home. With the right family, she definitely could get used to being crated, or she could continue spending her alone time outside of the crate as well.

AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION- LUCY 🤍

Lucy is a gentle and affectionate soul who adores attention and loves being close to her people. With her tail always wagging, she’s sure to bring joy to any home. While she’s incredibly loving, Lucy can be nervous at first, so she would thrive in a calm, patient home without small children or too much commotion. She also tends to be wary of men and will need time and understanding to build trust with them.

Lucy’s favorite things include mealtime, playing in the snow, cuddling on the couch, and indulging in treats like peanut butter, crackers, and eggs. She’s learning to play ball and is slowly figuring out how to socialize with other dogs. She would do well with a resident dog her size or larger, as she gets along beautifully with her 65-pound Goldendoodle friend. Lucy will need routine grooming every 6-10 weeks.

This smart girl is fully potty-trained (watch for her adorable little circle dance by the door!) and sleeps well in her dog bed at night. Lucy does not do well in crates or confined spaces due to past trauma, but she’s perfectly behaved when left out with her canine companions while you’re away.

Lucy has already mastered the “sit” command and is working on “down” (she loves to put her paws on you to say hello!). Though she’s hesitant with stairs, she’s comfortable navigating a few steps, like those on a deck. She’s incredibly smart, food-motivated, and eager to learn with the right guidance.

Lucy would be happiest with a nurturing, experienced handler who understands the needs of dogs with trauma. She’ll need patience and love to truly blossom into her best self, but the reward will be a loyal, loving companion who will fill your life with joy.

Meet Spirit 🤍

Spirit was transferred to us from our friends Dog Aide. Spirit was surrendered by his owner who decided it was okay to stop feeding him. We just don’t understand.

Spirit suffered from a hematoma while being neutered. Knowing he would need additional care, we worked to find a foster for him. Spirit is now resting comfortably in his foster home. Donations for Spirit’s care are needed & appreciated!

BENNY FOUND HIS FOREVER HOME 🤍

Our blind and deaf little boy finally found his people 🥹 Benny came into a municipal shelter emaciated, injured, and confused. Through the life saving work of his amazing foster, Benny learned how to navigate the world despite the toughest odds. Yesterday, he met his new family who has experience with disabled pups, and the rest was history.

🐾 kitty foster needed!!!

This girl has been hanging out at one of our board member’s houses for a few weeks now. She finally has had enough of the cold and let us grab her tonight! She is temporarily being held in a garage with no heat, but with a nice warm bed and out of the elements. We are looking for someone who can offer her a foster home, even temporarily

She is very talkative (and voicing her displeasure with being locked in a crate! )and very friendly! She loves to be pet and allowed us to pick her up and get her into a carrier. We know she is happy to be out of the snow. 🤍

She will be posted on the lost and found pages just in case she has a home already, and if no one comes forward, we will get her fixed and put her up for adoption.

In order to do that, we need someone to foster or foster to adopt! She can’t stay where she is at so the sooner the better! We provide the supplies and cover her vetting.

Meet our newest intake, Harley….because she purrs like a Harley Davidson! 🥰

This little peanut was pulled from a local shelter. She is about 3-ish months old, sweet as pie, and all kitten in the play department! She loves all the toys, gets bursts of zoomies, and loves to also cuddle.

Harley will be ready for adoption in a couple of weeks and will be looking for a home with another young, playful cat to keep her company!

Bring those animals inside! Frostbite on animals is real and can happen quickly in these temps! Even dogs acclimated for cold weather can get frostbite on their noses, paws, and ears! If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them!!

*Real Feel Temperature* of 4 degrees!

Our amazing Animal Care Technicians just helped one of our foster dogs with a hypothermia emergency that could honestly happen to any new dog guardian.

When temps are below 25, the wind chill can easily drop into the single digits. Foster Dog had a couple of “potty walks” throughout the morning, and then I got a call saying Foster Dog was lethargic and difficult to rouse.

Foster Dog’s thirty minute adventures outside throughout the day progressively lowered her temperature to hypothermic levels. Once at the shelter, ACTs got Foster Dog toasty warm (slowly) and have been monitoring her at the shelter, so far recovering well.

This is a gentle reminder that in these temps:

🐶 A “potty walk” is 5 minutes.

❄️ Pay attention to nose, toes, ears

🌬️ Wind chill is a big deal

🌾 Dog houses MUST have ample straw bedding

🥰 Make sure pooch is warmed up between trips outside, use sweaters and coats for smooth coat dogs

Sorry, everyone. In single digits, any dog breed can get frostbite on nose, toes, and ears pretty quickly. The difference with how these breeds are acclimated to cold weather 100 years ago is very different, and we don’t have enough snow right now in our area of Michigan for them to “pack in” and insulate themselves from the wind or share body heat.

They may look ok, but just like the little kid with blue lips shivering and saying they don’t want to get out of the pool, we have to be the grown ups and bring their fluffy butts inside and out of the elements.

New to the crew- Meet Strawberry!

Strawberry was also surrendered by her owner (unrelated to Tater). Strawberry is about 5 months old and soooo sweet! She loves to play with her foster brother, Dublin. Strawberry will also be headed to the vet to be spayed and then will be available for adoption!

We have been SO busy these past couple days getting our newest intakes settled in. 🖤 We are going to introduce all of them, starting with TATER!

Tater was surrendered to us after his owners could no longer care for him. We think Tater is around 16 weeks old. He is a CHUNK! Tater is 100% puppy! He will be getting neutered soon and then will be available for adoption. Huge thank you to our amazing foster Alyssa for opening her home to Tater!

Tater will be headed to the PAWS clinic next week! Donations towards his neuter and routine care is very appropriated!
