Update: it's a boy!

This kitten was trapped last week and I immediately noticed that her eye was damaged, likely from the URI that the feeder reported. The feeder had been trying for a while to catch him, his sibling, and his mom. We've only gotten this one so far. He is probably 4-5 months old, but was surprisingly tolerant of handling when we cleaned his eye. I think he may be able to stay inside with continued socialization.

He went to Forgotten Cats yesterday to be fixed and they determined that his eye needed to be removed. He also tested positive for FIV, which is likely a false positive if he is under 6 months old. Because of that result, he has to stay at the clinic until tomorrow evening so they can monitor for any complications from the enucleation.

The cost of the enucleation and Convenia came to $280, which I really can't afford, but it had to be done. If you can contribute anything towards this vet bill, it would be greatly appreciated. PayPal: arilog or Venmo: ariannadlogan

I want to avoid fees being taken out from using fundraising platforms, so I'll keep the post updated with how much we've raised.

Update 3/16: final results were still "weird" according to the vet, but it was just some kind of inflammatory response. His nose is less swollen and he's fully integrated into the house.

Angel Update:

Not exactly clear what is going on, but doesn't seem to be cancer. His nose is less bulbous than it was when we first brought him in. He's a sweetheart.

"Please find the attached preliminary biopsy report for Angel below. As it stands currently the pathologist doesn't see any indication of cancer and the biopsy suggests a nonspecific inflammatory cause for the lesion. They have it pending additional staining so I will contact you when that arrives. Pretty good news so far."

"MICROSCOPIC INTERPRETATION:
Haired skin, bridge of nose: Dermatitis, neutrophilic, eosinophilic, histiocytic and lymphoplasmacytic,
chronic, diffuse, marked to severe, with superficial and interstitial dermal fibrosis and epidermal
hyperplasia.
* Please note: Pending special stains; addendum to follow."

(So basically it's a bunch of cells and they're not really sure what it could be.)

Angel is doing well, but we're still waiting for his test results. He's definitely made himself at home.

Update: we've raised $215 so far, thank you!

This is Angel. He showed up to my colony in January and I got him TNRd as he didn't seem to be social. He was uncomfortable around the other cats since he was a newcomer and didn't have a place in the hierarchy. He would crouch when he walked because he was so nervous. Over the last few weeks his nose became swollen and then starting scabbing. I trapped him so he could receive veterinary care and he actually turned out to be friendly!

We don't have answers yet, but the vet did a punch biopsy so we can find out what's going on. It is likely cancer, but at least we'll know. We should have results from the biopsy in a few days.

Objective Information: EENT - Alopecic swelling at end of nose with focal 2mm scab. FNA yields small amount of blood with no indication of abscessation.

Assessment: Given lack of purulent discharge suspect neoplasia as more likely at this time (SCC or other). Recommend biopsy for confirmation.

Procedure: TTD to sedate Aseptic prep. 6mm punch biopsy at margin of grossly healthy and abnormal tissue. Submitted to Idexx in formalin. 4-0 monocryl in simple interrupted to appose. Tissue glue applied. Buprenorphine 0.1ml SQ and convenia 0.55ml SQ post op. Recovery unremarkable.

Invoice:
Sedated Exam (non-surgical) 50.00
Convenia Injection per mL (B) 56.00
Buprenorphine 0.5mg/ml (TGH medication) 25.00
STD BIOPSY W/ DESC (2701) (1 Site/Lesion) 189.00
Credit Card 1.00
TOTAL 321.00

Mr. Handsome was in bed with me for a little last night. He's finally settled in completely and is being more and more like a normal cat.

He likes to take naps under the rat cage and eat lots and lots of food.

He's still handsome, he's just very chonky now.

There are always cats who need help and sometimes we do not have enough time to help them. Someone I know takes care of many colonies in the area and did not have time to help with a small group of cats in need, so she reached out to me. It was a mom and three kittens. Simple enough, right?

I set up the traps Tuesday morning and the homeowner watched the traps. We caught the mom fairly quickly, but night came and there was no sign of the babies. The next morning I set up the traps again. We got one baby and he saw another in the yard. By the time I arrived to pick up the kitten, the second one was in the trap and I saw the third run under the shed. Later that afternoon we caught a bonus cat, an adult we had seen earlier in the morning. Then it was quiet.

Thursday came and went. The last kitten was briefly sunning herself in the yard, but did not go anywhere near the traps. On Friday she was finally hungry enough to go in. This job was complete (almost).

On Monday, someone needed assistance trapping six cats, including a possibly pregnant female.

On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, we continued trapping

By Friday evening, we trapped 26 cats between the two neighboring houses.

All will be neutered, vaccinated, and treated for fleas and worms, and several will be placed up for adoption, including the kittens and a few adults.

26 cats will not reproduce and add to the neverending amount of community cats who need to be trapped.

26 cats will have a reduced risk of cancer, with some types being completely eliminated.

The male cats will be less likely to fight with each other.

The females will not have to go through the constant processes of being pregnant and raising kittens.

The kittens will not have to go through another winter living outside.

If two people can do this in just five days, imagine what could be done if everyone helped the cats in their community.

A HUGE thank you to Forgotten Cats who was able to accommodate this unexpected number of cats. Please donate to them if you can.

And if you or someone you know feeds outside cats, PLEASE get them fixed.

4 cats trapped this week 💪
And more projects to come 😥

If you see a cat without an ear tip, please trap it! There are resources to get outside cats fixed. Women's Animal Center, The Bridge Clinic, Forgotten Cats. If you don't have a trap, many places offer trap rentals. Kids can traps. People in their 80s can trap. Anyone can trap.

Sometimes TNR costs money, but it saves the cats from cycles of getting pregnant multiple times a year and prevents kittens from being born (and potentially dying) outside.

Didn't get a picture of the 4th one yet, but she is still recovering so I will get one before she is released.

No more babies for this mom and dad. What I thought was a mission to trap a mom and two babies became a mom, dad, and three babies, plus a bonus cat who was already fixed.

The little grey and white one avoided the trap for 4 days after mom and siblings were caught and 2 days since dad was caught.

The woman who lived in the home helped by monitoring the traps, replacing food when it got covered in ants and flies, covering the traps once the cats were caught, and calling her grandkids to help release a raccoon.

If an 86 year old can help trap, so can you.

Today I trapped a mom and two kittens who chose someone's yard as their home after a storm a few weeks ago.

I met with the homeowners yesterday to assess the situation and thought they would be hard to get. Due to some health conditions, she couldn't handle the trapping herself, so I was more than happy to help.

I set up two traps on the patio where they eat, one near a bush that they were under, and another in front of the shed where we saw them nurse yesterday.

Within about ten minutes I had the kittens (in the same trap) and when I walked back to get them, I saw that mom was already in the other trap.

I'm still figuring out a plan for them, but the hope is for the kittens to stay inside. The mom can be released if needed.

THANK YOU!!! We reached the goal of $400. He continues to eat more and has been moving around a bit. Our best guess is that he has a concussion, so he should continue to show improvement over time.
