Hello All!! Can we just take a walk down memory lane with Sioux when he was healthy, excelling in his training, & filling the hearts of 2 kids who needed him more than ever. Then, he got sick. Very sick and had to return to the rescue for his healthcare. We still need to meet our goals of $3,000. Please donate to continue to support Callie and her horse Sioux who appears to be on the right road to recovery. See the link below to make your donation.

It’s and Sioux is still fighting for his life. Sioux has developed an unknown GI issue which is causing him to lose weight and triggered an EPM episode.

Every step forward we take, it seems we also take a step backwards. He’s started his treatment and now he’s been put on stall rest.

Sioux is in good spirits and still has a good prognosis.

Please consider donating directly to the rescue on Facebook or through our sponsorship link:

Little update on our trainer since sweet Sioux had to go to the rescue for treatment. We have 4 horses here from the rescue that are under some sort of training. Remember Prancer? Well, now that Callie has more time on her plate he is getting all of her attention so he can make someone a VERY nice horse. We can’t wait to go and check on Sioux and are praying for his recovery.

Sioux was returned back to the care team at Central Virginia Horse Rescue to start treatment of EPM this weekend. After consulting with the vet, the training team at Higgins Family Farm and the care team at the rescue, it was determined that his intense needs would be best monitored at the rescue farm.

While we don't know for sure, we believe whatever GI issue that started all of this also triggered the EPM flare up. Swift action by the team at his training facility allowed our veterinarian to begin treatments that saved his life. We can't stress enough the importance of monitoring your horses eating habits, their weight and their overall mood. Drastic changes in any of these generally signify that something is wrong.

Sioux needs support for his treatments and we hope that he will be returned to Callie "good as new" soon.

FRIENDS!! We need your help!! Sioux is not feeling well and is requiring veterinary care. The vet says figuring out what is going on with him is a puzzle! After 2 vet visits he is still resisting some of his food, spent most of his day laying flat out, is drinking minimally, fatigued, depressed, and definitely having digestive concerns. He has drastically lost weight and is being kept in a small space. Please help cover these costs by donating to Central Virginia Horse Rescue by using the following link so it can go directly to Sioux’s care!!!!!

Okay Sioux - you are quite the champion around here. What a QUICK learner. Important to know if you want to adopt this sweet man that he is great with small children. There is proof in the pudding 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼

Western training an OTTB

Callie has been introducing this pole to Sioux since day 1. Looks like that consistency paid off! An important fact about our trainer is that she is HUGE on working on desensitization. Her little brother Maverick is often used as a tool to keep the horses focused on the rider and NOT what’s happening around them. Don’t worry - we kept Maverick at a safe distance behind that sweet hunk of a horse. This coach/mom is super proud of this duo and their early accomplishments!

Rescue horses and cowgirls. Things are going to get fun with this BIG guy! He may have sat in a field for 5 years but we have a gut feeling he is going to pick up things quickly!!

Let us introduce our trainer for Sioux!! Meet Callie. Callie successfully trained a horse last year in the 2022 Youth Trainer Challenge though central Virginia horse rescue. They have started a program where they have annual challenges for youth to train a rescue horse so they can be safely adopted into the right home. Stay tuned if you like OTTB and are curious to see the progress in the coming months.

Below is a picture of Callies barrel horse she trained for the rodeo circuit.

We are excited to see what discipline Sioux picks for himself!!!

Sioux is starting to settle in as long as he has a stall & fan. We do notice he stresses way more in the field, knocks over water troughs, & paces. Give him the option of a fan and stall and he will settle right down and be a puppy dog. Today we worked on being Cross tied, tacked up, & sat on. Easy does it for this big fella. He has a sensitive soul & is our personal orchid around the farm. Stay tuned as we get to know him and ask more if him. In the mean time, we are just taking it easy and letting him settle in.

Little background: after being on the track he was passed around (we imagine). For the past 5 years he has been sitting in a field so restarting him will be important. We do know he has bucked someone off but with keeping things slow there was no signs of bucking today.
