Foster Request for Assistance
Adriel is a 3-year-old neutered Staffie mix who originally arrived as a stray late-October. Adriel has gotten more comfortable with staff, volunteers, and other dogs in playgroup. He is more confident in playgroup and does better with a small group of dogs. He is starting to play with the other dogs and give good corrections when needed. Adriel now comes up to the kennel door to be leashed though he is starting to bite at the leash. The behavior team was able to step into the kennel and it made it easier to leash him, but he was still biting at the leash. Leash biting is a sign of FAS.
Adriel went out on an Adventure Tails day trip with a foster and her small child. He was nervous but did well in the car rides and walked calmly on the leash. Adriel was adopted the next day for about a week but he was returned because he was playing too roughly with their small child and Chihuahua.
Volunteer Note: 10/30/23 Adriel hesitated a moment after I entered his kennel; then came right up to me for a pet and to be leashed. He walked well to the play yard. He was very affectionate today, coming up often for pets and climbing the ramp on his own to wait for me to sit and pet him. He was very interested in toys, playing quite a few rounds of fetch. He sometimes dropped the toy and other times gave it up very gently. He calmly laid down to rest in the yard. We spent time in the garden. He went off on his own more to explore; going among the plants and climbing out onto the ledge under the waterfall. He sits and shakes on command and is learning down. He also recalled well in the garden. He’s opened up more each time I’ve ROMPed with him.
Volunteer Note: 11/6/23 He was sleeping when I first walked into the kennel. I had to wake him up to get him to come to the front of the kennel. He was very easy to leash and walk to the yard. He walked right next to my side, the whole time and did not pull at all on our walk out to the yard. He loves to play ball and get affection. You can take the ball from his mouth without any issues. I had to take a phone call while out with him, and he just laid down by my side and waited. He knows how to sit and takes treats and gently.
Adventure Tails Note: 12/12/23 Me and my six year old son had the pleasure of taking out Adriel and he was an absolute dream dog. You could tell he was a little hesitant at first, tail tucked between his legs and head down but once we got to the car, he started to loosen up. He let me help him up into the car and my son told him to sit, which he did. He stayed calm and looked out the window as we drove to Pet Supplied Plus. We parked and I helped him out of the car. He had some water that I packed for him, and then we headed inside the store. He stopped to smell all the food bags. I took him down the toy aisle and he didn't seem too interested in them. We ran into a pair of dogs, which he sniffed briefly. No negative behavior or interest in trying to get them know.
After the store, we went back to the car and headed to Hillsborough River State Park. We got out and he used the potty. My son took the leash and he walked calmly with him. No pulling, no running off, nothing. Everyone we came across complimented his behavior and commented on how handsome he is. He let people pet him and then calmly kept walking with my son. We ran into a few other dogs and again, no negative behavior and no interest in engaging. After our 1.5 mile hike, I let my son play on the playground while Adriel and I got some water and sat down. He saw a squirrel and at that point, he pulled on the leash to try to chase the squirrel but after a minute of me not letting him run off, he sat down next to me and let me take pictures of him and love on him.
We headed back to the car and he took a really good nap with my son in the back seat. We went to Bullfrog Creek Brewing for a late lunch. Once again, everyone complimented his behavior and how handsome he is. He let all the kids pet him and play with him. He was super happy and you could tell he was really relaxed and having a good time. His body language completely changed. He sat with us while we ate, no jumping, no whining, no barking. He sniffed a few dogs there and there was one dog who wanted to play with him. He kind of engaged but he stayed really chill with him. He did a great job! I fell in love with him and I hope he finds a home that is deserving of his love.
Volunteer Note: 12/21/23 Adriel has made an amazing transformation from arriving as a shy dog. He comes to the door to be leashed and walks confidently to the play yard. His love of playing with toys and interacting with people has also continued growing. He played fetch, ran to me for treats and was very attentive during training. He ran around the garden play bowing at me and came up often for pets, all with a big doggy smile. He was outgoing, confident, and playful.
Staff Note: 12/22/23 Volunteer went to retrieve Adriel for play group, but the volunteer was unable to leash Adriel in the kennel due to snapping and biting the leash.
JS assisted an ACA with leashing Adriel for a meet and greet because Adriel was exhibiting the same behaviors from the morning. JS let Adriel grabbed the leash and tug on it for a few seconds before stepping in the kennel. Adriel was easier to leash once inside the kennel, but he still tried to grab the leash. Adriel allowed petting from the citizen and handling from JS, he did not bite the leash during the meet and greet nor going back to the kennel.
If you can help Adriel, please let us know as soon as possible!
