What's my top tip for training your pet?

C.O.N.S.I.S.T.E.N.C.Y

Yes I know it's not glamorous and it's not instant and some days it's just a PIA (pain in the you-know-what) but consistency is the key to successfully training your pet.

Just like when we hoomans want to develop a good habit and we need to do that thing consistently, aka everyday usually, the same goes for animal training.

In the long run it will be the fastest way to train your pet.

With my wishes to you for a very Happy Easter comes a tale of caution...

Please keep an eye on your pets when there is so much chocolate around - most of us know it can make our pets very sick. However it is easy to lapse into a false sense of security when you think you've put the box of Easter eggs in a safe place and your dog manages to find it and devour several chocolates and you spend the rest of your Easter celebrations calling the vet and monitoring your pet and feeling like the worst pawrent in the world.

Thankfully Bella was okay but please save yourself the grief and save your pets from eating things that can hurt them!

Today is "take a walk in the park day", which park will you be walking in?
I'll probably be sticking to my usual somewhere along the Ovens River Loop. It passes through Rotary park which (IMHO) is a highly under-utilised park on the other side of the bridge. It's a massive green space, perfect for some long lead/leash training!

Splish splash!

I love taking dogs for a walk where they get to choose how they want to have fun.

How cute is this hanging macrame cat bed? Would you make one for your cat? I'd definitely consider it if we have another feline friend in the future.

Can you believe that only two macrame knots are needed to make this simple and cute hanging macrame DIY cat bed.

Here's a great post from my friend Kate with some very helpful tips and about cats and their scratching. Hope it helps someone out there!

Does your cat scratch inappropriate furniture and ignores their scratching posts?

Try this:
1. Get them a cat scratch big enough to climb up. You can DIY this by going to your local carpet supplier, asking for the cardboard tube carpet comes rolled in and if they have scrap carpet, staple gun it to the tube.

2. Move your scratch poles around to renew interest.

3.Place treats in and around the items you want your cat to scratch.

4. Work out what material they like to scratch and make a pole in THAT material.

5.If the pole is near the furniture they scratch, move the cat scratcher somewhere else and block off the access to the furniture.

Here's a great post from my friend Kate with some useful tips about cat scratching posts that I wish I'd know about when...

Heading away for more than a few days and don't want to impose on family or friends - have you considered House Visits?

This is a great option for pets who are used to spending time on their own and can be arranged for one to two visits per day to check in on them, feed and walk them and give them some love while you're away.

If you'd like more info let me know and I'll send you my price list or pop your questions in the comments below.

I'd like to give a shout out to the Myrtleford Mosaic Trail - created by the (self named) Two Crackpots who have since ventured far and wide in our community to brighten up our days whenever we spot one of their creations.

If you're visiting Myrtleford or the area please do make a pit stop to look at all the wonderful mosaics around town. I do believe they are all outdoors so you can take your furry friends along too!

Happy National Puppy Day!

Do you remember when your doggo was a wee little puppy? Share a pic and in the comment so we can all oooohhhhh and awwww at their cuteness.

(Our dogs Bella, Charlie and Jasper were all re-homed with us as adult dogs so I've been deprived of the puppy stage or saved from it - depending which way you look at it!)

What's the best vacuum for pet hair?

We have a Miele Cat and Dog bag style vac that must be almost 15yo and still going strong. I tried a robot vac but our house has too many uppy downy bits which kinda took the fun out of it.
More recently I got the Miele Cat & Dog Triflex stick vac which is good but the canister fills up with pet hair very quickly.

Have you found the perfect vacuum for pet hair or is this a never-ending quest?

Safety First - why you shouldn't put your dog in front seat.

It may not be illegal, but it isn't a good idea for your dog to sit in the front passenger seat. If your car's airbags deploy, they could seriously injure your dog. Also it can be much more distracting to you when driving to have your pet in the front of the car.

There are many safety harnesses and seatbelts made especially for dogs to travel in cars and you can also get fantastic booster seats so smaller dogs can still look out the window.

Traveling with Dogs

If your dog hates the car you can help them get more comfortable with this mode of transport to make trips easier on both of you.

The trick is to help your dog anticipate that it's going to be fun, but you have to start really small. If your dogs loves going for walks, as you leave the house just walk them around the car once, maybe give them a treat then go enjoy your walk.
Do this a couple of times then try walking past the car with it's doors open, same thing do this until your dog shows no signs of stress or anxiety.

Keep building on this verrrry slowly. As your dog becomes more relaxed you might sit yourself in the car while they are on lead but not in the car and feed them their fave treats. Repeat, repeat, repeat. It's all about baby steps and going slow.

Basically you want to add a new teeny tiny step only once your dog is feeling confident with the previous step. (If you want suggestions on the other steps hop into my DM's.)

This process may take a long time and a lot of commitment but will be so worth it. Try doing one baby step/repetition everyday. It shouldn't take more than a few minutes.

Once your dog is okay with being in the car and you have done many short, fun trips to their fave parks, visiting their fave peeps, etc that is awesome BUT. Don't just assume that the issue is done and dusted and go back to only taking your dog in the car to the vet or on boring long road trips. Make sure to continue to throw some fun and exciting car trips in there for your dog now and then.

Happy travels!

Tuesday Tip

Use your imagination!

Administering medication to your pet is often tricky so try a variety of methods to make the task easier.

With our pets some of the chalkier tablets needed to be hidden in food, these meatballs were perfect but I've also known cats to eat a tablet if it's wrapped in salmon, so see what your pet prefers.

What methods have you found work for your pets?

Side note: always check with your vet for suggestions and if the meds can be taken with food etc first.
