It’s a rainy day and I see my 6 cats curled up on the bed finding warmth and comfort. While joining them for a cuddle I think of all the thousands of cats and dogs living on the streets. Do they have a comfy place to curl up? Or the better question is do they have a safe place at all?

On certain days I find it hard to even leave my house because I don’t want to see what’s outside. I don’t want to see the trash on the ground or the construction that spills over onto all parts of the road and sidewalks. But most of all I don’t want to see the animals living in horrible conditions, picking at day old couscous with one eye sealed shut with an infection and a limp in its leg from being hit by a car or motorcycle.

If I’m being honest I’ve been lazy and trust me when I say the guilt has been eating at me. I should be picking up cats and bringing them to the vet to be sterilized, vaccinated and cured of any illness but it really isn’t that easy. If I bring them to my house after the surgery I put my animals at risk, if I leave them at the vet they live in a small kennel for a week. But worse of all where do they go when all this is over… back to the street. Did it even help? What if they get hit by a car tomorrow?

I don’t have the answers and I’m not sure if there are any. Many people say you can’t look at the animal problem until the country helps the people. BUT WHY CANT WE HELP BOTH!!

PLEASE READ

It has been a long coming but we've finally, unfortunately, reached our breaking point.

** As of today, we cannot take in anymore rescues and we are putting our TNVR program on a pause. **

It's not because we don't want to—it couldn't be further from that—it's because can't.

There have been more and more owned animals needing help and people asking to get their local dogs though our TNVR program as well as those asking for help with animals' vet bills.

And while we have a seriously hard time saying no—we want to save them all but who in animal rescue doesn't?—we need to learn how to say just that.

In all the years of our work, we've never gotten to this point before. But with less donations coming in, less support, not being able to raise enough money for food, wages or vet trips, our debts deepening, this is our last resort to protect the animals (and people) already with us.

The 500 animals already in our care need to come first. Our team who many of them are still waiting to be paid for April—yes, April—need to come first. We need to sustain them first before we can help more.

Our vet trips will still be happening. Our animals will still need to be fed and medicated and sterilised and our team paid. Our 500 animals will still need to be fed and 4 rents will have to be paid.

We need you more than ever. We really do.

If you find an animal needing rescue you can either take it to the vet and see if you can fundraise for its care (and take care of it until it recovers) or contact one of the other associations in Morocco: https://moroccoanimalaid.com/other-associations/

Two more female sterilizations. We currently have three females in our care before we release them. Thank you so much for the donations to make this possible. We are trying to get as many done right now as we can because it’s kitten season. For each female cat we sterilize that saves about 20,000-30,000 lives in the span of her lifetime and her kittens lifetime.

We wish more than anything that we had a magic wand. One that could get all these beautiful creature healthy and in amazing home! If only that could be reality.

Today the reality was giving this mama a box for her babies and some food. That was all we had to give. But we still have hope to do more. If you have the ability to donate there is an endless number of animals here in Casablanca that need you.

Ain Diab is one itchy girl! She most definitely has a skin disease as you can see from the pictures. She will get her vet visit tomorrow to determine what medicine can help with that.

Positives are she slept a whole night in a kennel with no problems! She seems to already be toilet trained and she loves to give hugs!!

The latest TNVR. She is being cared for in a residence where the goal is to sterilize one female cat per week till all cats in the residence are fixed. Then we move on. We’ll keep you updated.

Sterilizing female cats significantly reduces the risk of ovarian, uterine and breast cancer (most common among unfixed female cats). Let alone all the unwanted kittens.

The realities of rescue. We have been dealing with Giardia in one house since September! The cats have been treated at least 5 times. They were treated literally one week ago today and this is Luna’s situation. If anyone who rescues has any advice or how to get rid of this parasite we would GREATLY appreciate it. We’ve spent well over $600 treating this disease and $150 just today.

For those reaching out asking us to take in injured and sick animals, this is why we have to say no. We do this out of our homes and it’s just not sustainable.

How many is too many? If we fits, we all sits.

🛇 Use your Manners! 🛇
The Sniff test - Stop doing that!
The sniff test - a badly engrained habit that society has been taught, without a clear understanding of what they're actually doing.

🚩When you reach out towards a dog, you are using body pressure AT them, giving them no time to assess whether you are safe & whether they require further investigation to pick up your information. You are forcing an interaction of a relationship that hasn't had time to develop. To some dogs, this is quite rude & the reason a lot of dogs snap at or bite people. This can cause alot of behavioral issues because of layered stress due to forced interactions.

🚩If they are on lead, they have no where to go if they are sensitive to spacial pressure, so can end up shutting down, shying away or snapping at your hand so you back off. This is an example of how a dog is now using pressure to turn off pressure & make you back off so they aren't so stressed.

🚩People think by offering your hand it can give the dog time to sniff to know you're friendly... they can sniff without being forced to sniff your hand.Their noses are far more superior than ours & they don't need close contact forced upon them to smell you.

🚩Some dogs might not want to know you. You have no relationship with them and that's perfectly fine. They aren't your dog so you don't need to touch them or steal pats for your own satisfaction.

🤔 If you are meeting a dog, what should you do?
⚠Ask the owner if you can interact with their dog. Not all people want strangers touching their dogs. Especially strangers who you are unlikely to see again.
⚠Stand up straight & relaxed, with your hands at your side.
⚠Ignore the dog & talk to the owner.
⚠Don't stare at the dog & don't try to force an interaction by going in for a pat. If the dog wants to know you, it will come up to you & sniff around. Usually they will move away & then come back for a second sniffathon. Some dogs will bunt your hands & wag their tails, which are good signs that you're likely an accepted new friend. Give them a few slow pats down their back (NOT THEIR HEAD) & then stop. Is the dog happy? Has it accepted your interaction? This will determine whether you can give it more pats.

🐶This is a more stress free option for dogs & a reason why in consultations we can develop a good level of trust, especially with fearful dogs & aggressive dogs, without a bunch of negative side effects from forced interactions.

Story time! I (Cecilia) went on vacation to the Sahara dessert with my husband. On the first night my husband dislocated his shoulder so in the dessert in the middle of the night we needed to find an emergency hospital for him. After 2 hours of driving we made it to a hospital that had a doctor and found out that it was very dislocated and he would need to go under general anesthesia for them to put it back. While my husband was having this operation done I was feeling very anxious and stressed which was clear by the tears! Then into the waiting room came a sweet little kitten heading straight to me. She rubbed her body against my legs, put her arms on my knees and jumped right into my lap for some cuddles. She stayed with me until my husband was awake and even then didn’t want to leave my side. The simple compassion of this beautiful little kitten made me feel calm and like everything would be okay. I have no doubt that she knew how I was feeling and knew that she could help. Animals truly amaze me with their unconditional love, something that I feel many humans don’t have. I hope that cat continues to cheer people up in that hospital when they need it the most!

Now please enjoy some pictures of animals that we found along our travels!

We do NOT promote buying animals. These two are Breed animals and sold here in Morocco. Both of them abandoned. Blue the Siamese kitten has a dangling leg when we found him. Thrown on the street because he could not be sold. Amazing the strong and brave boy grew a new bone and you would even know his leg was broken to begin with.

Rocco the puppy we think a Morkie was surrendered by his owner. He came to us FULL of parasites, WHY?? He is a breed which means he’s never been in the street. That tells us that the breeder is not taking proper care of Mama and puppies then selling parasite ridden animals. This is appalling. Selling animals for a profit but not properly caring for them because it costs money. Our hearts break to think of the conditions the mother dog is living in.

The other sad part of this story is that these two are out most sought after animals, because society says they’re more beautiful because they are a breed. We want to change this. We think all of our cats are equally beautiful and Beldi dogs are just as smart, stunning, and spectacular as any other breed. Please help us spread awareness and stop breeding is animals when there are SO MANY dying on the streets everyday. 💔

Little Rocco got to come home for a sleepover, he’s still pooping blood, he’s not eating, but he was stressed on his own at the vet so he gets to be home for the night.
