While this time of year brings joy and celebration, it can also present some difficulties for our dogs. From tempting treats to noisy gatherings, here are a few things to keep in mind to ensure our dogs have a safe and happy holiday season: 🎄

1️⃣ Beware of holiday foods: It's no secret that dogs love treats, but some human foods can be harmful to them. Keep chocolate, grapes, onions, and other potentially toxic foods out of their reach. Opt for dog-friendly treats instead!

2️⃣ Decorations and ornaments: The twinkling lights and shiny ornaments may look mesmerizing, but they can pose a hazard to curious pups. Make sure decorations are secured and out of their reach to avoid accidents or ingestion.

3️⃣ Noise and crowds: Parties and gatherings can be overwhelming for our dogs. Create a quiet and safe space where they can retreat to if they feel stressed or anxious. Consider playing soothing music to help them relax.

4️⃣ Gift wrapping precautions: Ribbons, strings, and wrapping paper may seem like toys to our dogs, but they can be dangerous if ingested. Keep an eye on them while wrapping presents and dispose of any potential hazards properly.

5️⃣ Changes in routine: The holiday season often brings changes in our daily routines. Remember to maintain regular exercise and feeding schedules for your dogs. Consistency will help them feel secure and happy.

Scent retrieve training is incredibly beneficial for dogs like Dozer.
During this training, Dozer is taught how to search for a specific scent, catnip in this case, locate it, and then bring it back to his handler without getting distracted by the blanks or running off with it. This type of training helps dogs develop their scent detection skills and enhances their ability to focus and follow instructions. By mastering the scent retrieve, Dozer becomes more engaged on playing a constructive game with his humans.

Today, I wanted to shed some light on a crucial topic: identifying and avoiding bad dog trainers. As responsible pet owners, it's essential to entrust our pets to trainers who prioritise their well-being and use effective, humane techniques. So, here are some red flags to watch out for when selecting a dog trainer:

1️⃣ Lack of certifications or credentials: Reputable dog trainers often possess certifications from recognised organisations. Ensure your trainer has the necessary qualifications and continues to update their knowledge.

2️⃣ Overemphasis on dominance and punishment: Beware of trainers who rely heavily on dominance-based training methods or harsh punishments. It’s outdated and doesn’t work.

3️⃣ Refusal to allow observation: A good trainer will welcome you to observe their training sessions. If a trainer doesn't allow you to see how they work or discourages your presence, it may be a sign of questionable practices.

4️⃣ Unwillingness to answer questions: Transparent communication is vital when working with a dog trainer. If a trainer avoids answering your questions or dismisses your concerns, it's a clear red flag.

What is the fall out?

🚫 Trust and Bond Breakdown: Punishment-based training erodes the trust and bond we share with our dogs. Our dogs look up to us for guidance and love. When we resort to punishment, it creates fear and anxiety damaging the connection.

🚫 Fear and Aggression: Punishment can lead to fear and aggression in dogs. When they associate training sessions with negative experiences, they may become anxious or defensive, resulting in unwanted behaviours. We need our dogs to feel safe and secure, not fearful or aggressive.

🚫 Inhibiting Learning and Confidence: Punishment can hinder a dog's ability to learn and grow. Dogs thrive on positive reinforcement, which encourages them to repeat desired behaviours. Punishing them for mistakes can make them hesitant and less willing to try new things, impeding their progress and confidence.

🚫 Suppression vs. Understanding: Punishment often suppresses behaviours temporarily rather than addressing the underlying cause. It fails to teach our dogs what we want them to do instead. Positive reinforcement, on the other hand, helps them understand and actively participate in their training.

🚫 Damaging the Human-Canine Relationship: Our relationship with our dogs should be built on love, trust, and mutual understanding. Punishment-based methods can strain this bond and make training sessions a negative experience for both of us. We want our training journey to be filled with happiness and play.

🚫 Long-Term Behavioural Issues: Punishment can lead to long-term behavioural problems such as fear-based aggression, anxiety, and avoidance. These issues can be challenging to address and may require professional intervention. Prevention through positive reinforcement is always better than trying to fix these problems later on.
