Taming Chaos

Taming Chaos Trainers that are here to help owners of crazy dogs turn chaos into calm. Lets train together

02/12/2023

As we gear up for the festive season, let's take a moment to think about our dogs and the challenges they might face during Christmas.

While this time of year brings joy and celebration, it can also present some difficulties for our dogs. From tempting treats to noisy gatherings, here are a few things to keep in mind to ensure our dogs have a safe and happy holiday season: 🎄

1️⃣ Beware of holiday foods: It's no secret that dogs love treats, but some human foods can be harmful to them. Keep chocolate, grapes, onions, and other potentially toxic foods out of their reach. Opt for dog-friendly treats instead!

2️⃣ Decorations and ornaments: The twinkling lights and shiny ornaments may look mesmerizing, but they can pose a hazard to curious pups. Make sure decorations are secured and out of their reach to avoid accidents or ingestion.

3️⃣ Noise and crowds: Parties and gatherings can be overwhelming for our dogs. Create a quiet and safe space where they can retreat to if they feel stressed or anxious. Consider playing soothing music to help them relax.

4️⃣ Gift wrapping precautions: Ribbons, strings, and wrapping paper may seem like toys to our dogs, but they can be dangerous if ingested. Keep an eye on them while wrapping presents and dispose of any potential hazards properly.

5️⃣ Changes in routine: The holiday season often brings changes in our daily routines. Remember to maintain regular exercise and feeding schedules for your dogs. Consistency will help them feel secure and happy.

Let's make this Christmas a pawsome one for our dogs!

Vizsla or kangaroo!
Scent retrieve training is incredibly beneficial for dogs like Dozer.
During this training, Dozer is taught how to search for a specific scent, catnip in this case, locate it, and then bring it back to his handler without getting distracted by the blanks or running off with it. This type of training helps dogs develop their scent detection skills and enhances their ability to focus and follow instructions. By mastering the scent retrieve, Dozer becomes more engaged on playing a constructive game with his humans.

Beware of Bad Dog Trainers!
Spotting the warning signs

Today, I wanted to shed some light on a crucial topic: identifying and avoiding bad dog trainers. As responsible pet owners, it's essential to entrust our pets to trainers who prioritise their well-being and use effective, humane techniques. So, here are some red flags to watch out for when selecting a dog trainer:

1️⃣ Lack of certifications or credentials: Reputable dog trainers often possess certifications from recognised organisations. Ensure your trainer has the necessary qualifications and continues to update their knowledge.

2️⃣ Overemphasis on dominance and punishment: Beware of trainers who rely heavily on dominance-based training methods or harsh punishments. It’s outdated and doesn’t work.

3️⃣ Refusal to allow observation: A good trainer will welcome you to observe their training sessions. If a trainer doesn't allow you to see how they work or discourages your presence, it may be a sign of questionable practices.

4️⃣ Unwillingness to answer questions: Transparent communication is vital when working with a dog trainer. If a trainer avoids answering your questions or dismisses your concerns, it's a clear red flag.

5️⃣ Lack of positive reinforcement: Positive reinforcement is the cornerstone of effective training. Be cautious of trainers who rely solely on punishment or intimidation, as it can damage the trust between you and your dog.

6️⃣ Unreasonable promises or quick fixes: Training takes time and effort. Be wary of trainers who promise instant results or claim to fix deep-rooted behavioural issues overnight. Realistic expectations are key.

7️⃣ Poor reviews or negative feedback: Researching a trainer's reputation is crucial. Check online reviews, ask for references, and consult fellow pet owners to ensure they've had positive experiences.

8️⃣ Trust your instincts: Ultimately, trust your gut feeling. If something feels off or makes you uncomfortable, it's important to prioritize your dog's well-being and seek a trainer who aligns with your values.

Remember, your dog deserves the best care and training possible. By being vigilant and recognising these red flags, we can ensure our dogs receive the positive, effective training they deserve.
Stay informed, ask questions, and choose a trainer who truly has your dog's best interests at heart. 🐾❤️

Understanding Reactivity in Dogs: Tips for Owners 🐾

Reactivity in dogs can lead to intense responses to certain stimuli. It's not necessarily aggression, but a heightened reaction to perceived threats or anxiety. Managing reactivity requires patience, empathy, and professional help if needed.

Here are some tips to support reactive dogs:

1️⃣ Use positive reinforcement: Reward calm behavior and gradually expose them to triggers in a controlled and positive way. Reinforce desired behavior rather than punishing reactive responses.

2️⃣ Create a safe space: Establish a calm environment at home with a designated retreat area for your dog when they feel overwhelmed.

3️⃣ Seek professional help: If your dog's reactivity becomes unmanageable, consult a professional trainer or behaviorist for tailored strategies.

Remember, every dog is unique. Approach their needs with empathy and creativity. With time, patience, and love, we can help our furry friends thrive!

Share your experiences and tips in the comments below. Let's support each other and our wonderful furry companions! 🐶❤️🤝

Punishment based training
What is the fall out?

🚫 Trust and Bond Breakdown: Punishment-based training erodes the trust and bond we share with our dogs. Our dogs look up to us for guidance and love. When we resort to punishment, it creates fear and anxiety damaging the connection.

🚫 Fear and Aggression: Punishment can lead to fear and aggression in dogs. When they associate training sessions with negative experiences, they may become anxious or defensive, resulting in unwanted behaviours. We need our dogs to feel safe and secure, not fearful or aggressive.

🚫 Inhibiting Learning and Confidence: Punishment can hinder a dog's ability to learn and grow. Dogs thrive on positive reinforcement, which encourages them to repeat desired behaviours. Punishing them for mistakes can make them hesitant and less willing to try new things, impeding their progress and confidence.

🚫 Suppression vs. Understanding: Punishment often suppresses behaviours temporarily rather than addressing the underlying cause. It fails to teach our dogs what we want them to do instead. Positive reinforcement, on the other hand, helps them understand and actively participate in their training.

🚫 Damaging the Human-Canine Relationship: Our relationship with our dogs should be built on love, trust, and mutual understanding. Punishment-based methods can strain this bond and make training sessions a negative experience for both of us. We want our training journey to be filled with happiness and play.

🚫 Long-Term Behavioural Issues: Punishment can lead to long-term behavioural problems such as fear-based aggression, anxiety, and avoidance. These issues can be challenging to address and may require professional intervention. Prevention through positive reinforcement is always better than trying to fix these problems later on.

Positive Reinforcement: is the way forward! 🌟

If you've had experiences with punishment-based training or have tips, feel free to share in the comments below! Let's create a supportive space where we can all learn and grow as responsible dog owners. 🐶💖

The power of play!
Playing with your dog helps build a bond. Building a strong bond with your dog through playtime is a fantastic idea.
Here are five games you can play with your dog to strengthen your connection:

1. Fetch: A classic game that most dogs love! Throwing a ball or a toy and having your dog retrieve it is a great way to engage and bond with them.

2. Tug of War: This game can help build trust and develop a strong bond between you and your dog. Just make sure to teach them proper tug manners to avoid any accidents.

3. Hide and Seek: Hide in a different room or behind furniture and call your dog to come find you. It's a fun game that strengthens their listening skills and reinforces the bond between you two and helps with recall.

4. Treat Puzzle Toys: Invest in puzzle toys that dispense treats. This not only entertains your dog but also stimulates their problem-solving skills and keeps them mentally engaged. Or better still make some! Drop treats on a towel and took it up.

5. Find the Treat: Hide treats around your house or garden and encourage your dog to find them. This game engages their sense of smell and keeps them entertained.

Remember, the key is to have fun and create positive experiences for your dog.

Did you know that genetic traits in dogs can sometimes lead to unexpected and chaotic behavior? It's fascinating how certain genes can influence their temperament and tendencies.

Have you ever noticed your dog displaying unusual behaviours that leaves you scratching your head? It might be worth exploring the genetic factors that contribute to their unique personalities!

Understanding the genetic underpinnings of dog behaviour can provide valuable insights into their needs and help us become better pet parents. By recognising these traits, we can tailor our approach to training, socialisation, and daily care to ensure a harmonious relationship with our dogs.

Remember, it's not about blaming genetics for any chaos but rather embracing the opportunity to learn and adapt to our dogs' individual needs. With patience, love, and a little bit of creativity, we can help channel their energy and instincts in positive ways.

Do you know what some of the causes of chaotic behaviour are?
Understanding these factors can help us provide the right support and create a harmonious bond with our dogs .

1️⃣ Inconsistent training and unclear communication: Dogs thrive on clear guidance and consistent training techniques. When we fail to provide this, it can lead to frustration in dog, resulting in chaotic behavior.

2️⃣ Fear and anxiety: Our dogs can experience fear and anxiety, just like us. Sometimes, we might overlook their signs of distress, mistaking their behaviour as naughtiness. Recognising their stressors and providing a safe and calm environment can help prevent chaotic behaviour.

3️⃣ Boredom: Ah, the big one! A walk is essential, but we must remember that dogs also need mental stimulation. Allowing them to explore, sniff, interact, and play in their environment is vital for their overall well-being.

4️⃣ Mental stimulation: Some dogs require more mental challenges than others. Puzzle games, scent work, and even a game of hide and seek with their toys can provide the mental exercise they need.

5️⃣ Food: Just like us, some foods can affect a dog's behaviour. Certain ingredients or allergies might lead to unruly behaviour. Paying attention to their diet and ensuring they have a balanced, suitable meal can help prevent any behavioural issues related to food.

Remember, every dog is unique, and their behaviour can be influenced by various factors. If you want to know more join our 5 games to promote calm link below

"We got Fern at 8 weeks old, and right from the beginning, she proved to be an incredibly challenging and strong-willed puppy. We sought the help of a dog trainer who visited our home to provide training guidance. Unfortunately, the techniques we learned only worsened Fern's behavior over the following weeks. Frustrated and concerned about our lack of bond, I decided to seek alternative methods to strengthen our relationship.

That's when I discovered Susanne's scent training program at Doghampton. Intrigued, I decided to give it a try, and the results were astounding. Week after week, we witnessed our bond growing stronger as Fern excelled in scent training. Encouraged by this success, we ventured into Man Trailing, a new activity that Fern and I have come to adore. Thanks to the guidance and expertise of Susanne and Emma, we have transformed our relationship and developed an incredible bond that I never thought possible.

Before starting scent detection training, Susanne and Emma provided invaluable one-to-one training and advice, addressing Fern's challenging behavior and helping us build a foundation of trust. This personalized approach ensured that Fern's specific needs were met, and we were equipped with the tools and knowledge necessary for success.

We are immensely grateful to Susanne and Emma for their expertise, patience, and unwavering support. Their guidance has not only transformed Fern's behavior but also enriched our lives. With their help, we have created an unbreakable bond that allows us to enjoy every minute of our time together. Thank you, Susanne and Emma, for helping us establish a truly amazing connection."

3 of the most important things to teach your dog.

Recall (Coming When Called):
Teaching your dog a reliable recall is crucial for their safety. Imagine being able to call them back in potentially dangerous situations or during off-leash adventures. A strong recall allows your dog to explore while giving you peace of mind. Plus, it's a great way to enhance your connection and trust!
Leave It:
The "leave it" cue is a lifesaver! It teaches your dog to ignore or let go of something they're interested in but shouldn't have, such as dangerous objects, harmful foods, or other animals. This command helps prevent accidents and protects their well-being.

Settle: Train your dog to calm down and settle in a designated spot, which is helpful during mealtimes, visits, or when you need them to relax.

Remember, training takes time, patience, and consistency. Positive reinforcement, such as treats, praise, and play, works wonders in motivating and rewarding your dog's good behaviour. Seek professional guidance if needed, and always use positive, force-free training methods.

If you had to describe your dog with one word, what would it be?
Here are mine:
Kibble-Rambunctious: Always on the move and full of mischief, she has an endless supply of energy that can sometimes leave us breathless. She guarantees an adventure around every corner!

Dozer-Catastrophic: Known for his knack of causing chaos wherever he goes, he has an uncanny ability to turn a peaceful household into a whirlwind of mayhem. He keeps us on our toes and our home in constant disarray.

Goose-Destructive: he has a talent for transforming furniture, shoes, and anything he can find into unrecognisable piles of debris. He challenge us to puppy-proof our homes and invest in sturdy chew toys.

Poco-Hilarious: With his comedic timing and knack for entertaining, he brings joy and laughter into our lives. He has a natural talent for making us smile, even on the gloomiest of days.

Lets chat about a crucial aspect of dog training that sometimes gets overlooked: addressing the root cause of certain behaviours before diving into training training mode.
We all know that our dogs have unique personalities, and sometimes they can be a little over the top with their exuberance! Whether it's excessive barking, jumping, or pulling on the lead, or just generally being chaotic, it's essential to understand the underlying cause behind these behaviors.

When we notice our dogs exhibiting such behaviours, it's easy to jump straight into training mode. However, taking a step back and investigating the cause can be incredibly beneficial in the long run.

Perhaps your energetic pup is seeking attention, feeling anxious, or even lacking mental and physical stimulation. By addressing these root causes, we can create a more solid foundation for successful training.

So, before we embark on the training journey, let's make sure to:

Understand the underlying cause: Take the time to observe your dogs behaviour and try to identify what triggers their over-the-top antics. This awareness will empower you to address the issue more effectively.

Provide mental and physical stimulation: Dogs are intelligent creatures who need both mental and physical exercise to thrive. Engage them in interactive play, provide puzzle toys, and consider incorporating obedience training into their routine.

Remember, training should be a holistic approach that considers the well-being of our furry companions. By addressing the root cause of their over-the-top behaviour, we can create a harmonious and balanced bond with our dog.

Feel free to share your experiences and insights on this topic in the comments below! Let's support each other on this exciting journey of dog training and behaviour shaping.

We’ve been getting a lot of questions lately about how to calm down a bouncy chaotic dog and prevent them from going crazy. 🤔

Well, here's a little analogy for you: Imagine trying to turn a naturally shy and quiet person into a social butterfly. It's not something you can magically change, right? Similarly, if you've chosen a breed known for their energy and liveliness, they'll always have that spirited side.

But fear not! While we can certainly teach our dogs some manners, impulse control, and on-and-off behavior, it's important to remember that embracing and understanding their energetic nature is key.

Video is Dozer going from calm then after his release cue he starts his bouncy crazy time.

🐾💕 Share your own experiences or tips below if you've found ways to engage and bond with your energetic pups! 🐶💖

Lead Reactivity: Understanding it and how you can help:

Lead reactivity is a common challenge that many dog owners face. It refers to a dog's negative response, such as barking, lunging, or growling, when they encounter other dogs or stimuli while on a leash.
Here are five helpful tips to manage and improve it:

1️⃣ Stay Calm and Confident: Dogs can sense our emotions, so it's important to remain calm and composed during walks. If you're anxious or tense, your dog may pick up on that energy, making their reactivity worse. Take deep breaths, use a relaxed grip on the leash, and project a confident demeanor.

2️⃣ Create Distance: Give your dog some space when encountering triggers. Cross the street or take a detour to create distance between your dog and the trigger, whether it's another dog or a stimulating environment. Gradually decrease the distance as your dog becomes more comfortable.

3️⃣ Positive Reinforcement: Reward your dog for calm behaviour and focus. Carry treats or use their favorite toy to redirect their attention back to you when they start to react. Praise and reward them when they remain calm, reinforcing the idea that good behavior leads to positive outcomes.

4️⃣ Training and Desensitization: Consider enrolling in a training class or working with a professional dog trainer to address lead reactivity. They can guide you through desensitisation exercises, gradually exposing your dog to triggers in a controlled and positive manner.

5️⃣ Patience and Consistency: Remember that overcoming lead reactivity takes time and consistency. Stay patient and committed to the process. Consistent training, positive reinforcement, and gradually increasing exposure to triggers will help your dog become more comfortable and better behaved on walks.

🐾💕 Remember, each dog is unique, so it's essential to tailor your approach to their specific needs. Seek professional guidance if you need extra support. Together, we can help our dog become more relaxed and enjoy their walks to the fullest! 🐶🚶‍♂️

20/09/2023

We had a sniff-tastic walk today, despite the windy weather! 🌪️

Did you know that allowing our dogs to sniff during walks is super important for their mental stimulation, exercise, bonding, and trust-building? Sniffing engages their senses, provides mental stimulation, and helps them gather valuable information about their surroundings. It's a natural behaviour that allows our dogs to explore and understand their environment, taking in all the wonderful scents around them.

So next time you're out on a walk with your dog, don't forget to give them the opportunity to follow their nose and enjoy the sniffing adventure!
Happy sniffing! 🐾😊
