Jenday Conures are small Brazilian parakeets with a very big character.
This friendly specimen came in for a check up at Il-Veterinarju and entertained us with his bright colors and even brighter personality. Being a young bird his chest plumage is still green. This will slowly turn bright orange as he matures.

Two beautiful species of lizard came in for a visit this week. Uromastyx and savanah monitors are not for beginners and have very specific husbandry requirements, but if cared for correctly and given the right amount of space, they can be very rewarding and fascinating pets.

Eye pinning, also known as eye flashing or eye blazing, is a form of body language used by parrots. The term refers to the rapid and very conspicuous dilation and constriction of the pupils of the bird's eyes in response to an external stimulus. Unlike humans, parrots are able to control this reflex and use it as a form of nonverbal communication. It is a common behavior and it can be an indication that the parrot is feeling excited, angry, afraid or is interested in something. In some circumstances (such as a vet visit!!) it may also be a warning that the parrot is currently in a state of being where it will bite if touched.

Grey, the African grey parrot kindly demonstrated the eye pinning behavior during his check up!

One may be excused for thinking that this endearing creature is a hedgehog but it is in fact not related to hedgehogs at all!
It is known as a lesser tenrec and is endemic to the island of Madagascar.
Tenrecs are quite peculiar when is comes to telling males and females apart as they have no visible external genitalia. This particular one popped in to see us for a quick cheek swab that will be sent for DNA analysis, allowing us to finally know if its gender.
