When dealing with a reactive dog, it’s crucial to recognise that their behaviour is a symptom, not the root problem. Reactive behaviours, such as barking, lunging, or growling, often stem from underlying emotions like fear, anxiety, frustration, insecurity or lack of confidence. These reactions are a way for the dog to cope with situations that overwhelm or stress them.

Focusing solely on stopping the behaviour without addressing the underlying emotional or psychological cause can lead to further issues or even make the problem worse. For example, if a dog is barking out of fear, simply punishing or discouraging the barking doesn’t resolve the fear itself. Instead, it may suppress the behaviour temporarily, but the fear remains, potentially manifesting in other, more harmful ways.

To truly help a reactive dog, the focus should be on understanding and addressing the underlying triggers that cause their distress. By addressing the root cause, you can help the dog develop healthier ways to cope, leading to more lasting and positive behavioural changes.

Seriously, we’re still doing this?

Let me introduce you to modern science.

Alpha theory is rooted in the idea that dogs, need to be dominated by a strong leader to behave properly. This approach assumes that a dog’s misbehaviour is a challenge to the owner's authority, and that it must be met with forceful correction to "establish dominance." Techniques associated with alpha theory, rely on intimidation and control rather than understanding the underlying causes of the dog’s behaviour.

However, this approach overlooks the importance of mutual understanding and building a positive relationship with your dog. Dogs respond much better to training that is based on connection, support, and positive reinforcement. Rather than enforcing submission, modern training emphasises understanding a dog’s natural behaviours, guiding them, and rewarding good behaviour. This fosters a relationship built on trust, where both the dog their human work together harmoniously.

By focusing on understanding rather than dominance, guardians can create a more effective and humane training environment, leading to better behaviour and a stronger bond between the dog and their human.

Resource guarding is a common behaviour where a dog guards things they value, such as food, toys, or even a favourite spot. This behaviour is rooted in their natural instincts to protect valuable resources. It is an instinctual behaviour passed down from wild ancestors who had to protect their food and belongings to survive. While domesticated dogs live in secure environments, this instinct can still surface. It's important to understand that resource guarding doesn't mean your dog is aggressive or bad. Instead, it reflects their instinctual need to safeguard what they consider important.

While common, it’s important to recognise the signs and address them appropriately to prevent potential issues. Contact us for professional guidance and support in managing resource guarding effectively. We can provide strategies to reduce guarding behaviour and ensure your dog feels secure. By addressing resource guarding properly, you can help your dog feel more relaxed and confident, improving your bond and their overall well-being.

“Listen to what dogs are telling us, watch them carefully, and give them room to say no or consent to our presence and if and how we approach and touch them.”

Many bites are avoidable if we honor what a dog is saying to us.

Let’s talk management!

In dog training, management refers to the strategies and techniques that owners and trainers use to prevent or limit problem behaviors from occurring.

Effective management in dog training can help set your dog up for success and prevent problem behaviors from occurring. This includes using strategies such as:

* Supervision: Keeping a close eye on your dog at all times to prevent them from engaging in unwanted behavior. This can be particularly important during training, as it allows you to catch and redirect the dog's behavior before it becomes a problem.
* Environmental controls: Making changes to the dog's environment to make it less likely that they will engage in unwanted behavior. For example, putting away food or trash that the dog might be tempted to get into, or putting up barriers to prevent the dog from jumping on guests.

As a dog owner, it's important to take responsibility for the environment you provide for your dog. For instance, leaving out a tempting blanket or other item can be a recipe for disaster.

Above is the artwork left Pippa, by using effective management strategies, like keeping tempting items out of reach, I can help prevent this from happening again and set her up for success in the future.

Let's face it, not every training session with our furry friends goes according to plan. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, things just don't click. It can be frustrating and discouraging, but it's important to remember that setbacks are a normal part of the learning process - for both dogs and their humans! Instead of getting discouraged, take a step back, reassess your approach, and keep working towards your goals. With patience and persistence, you and your pup will get there. 🐾💪

The use of physical punishment or aversive training methods, can have negative effects on a dog's behavior and welfare.

Research has shown that dogs who are trained using punishment-based methods may be more likely to develop behavioral issues such as fear, anxiety, and aggression.

Force free training, is a more effective and humane way to train dogs. By building a strong bond of trust and mutual respect with your dog, you can create a positive and fulfilling relationship based on love, communication, and cooperation.

I often get asked if anxiety can be reinforced. The answer is NO, anxiety cannot be reinforced.

Will I make my dog worse if i comfort him during fireworks? NO

It's natural for humans and animals to seek comfort when they feel scared or anxious.

Providing comfort to a scared dog can help to reduce their stress levels and make them feel more secure.

By doing this, you are not reinforcing that fear.

You are not to blame for your dog's anxiety. Dogs can develop anxiety for a variety of reasons, such as genetics, past experiences, or changes in their environment.

It's our responsibility to provide them with the support and love they need to manage their anxiety and live happy, healthy lives.
