Deep pressure therapy helps to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system and put the body into a calmer « rest mode ». The pressure from the Riddley’s weight on the child helps to calm him down and reduce hyperactive behaviors.

Service dogs can be trained to provide deep pressure therapy to help individuals struggling with anxiety, autism, ADHD, PTSD, and other conditions.

Part 1 of training an anxiety alert! There are many ways to teach this, but I'm showing you guys the steps I am using to shape the command with Riddley. We've been working on this for the last three days, so it took a few sessions to build up to where we are now! I haven't edited the video as I want you to see what realistic training looks like for us - she doesn't get it right every time, and there are distractions like (e.g., my cat, noises from the surrounding forest, other dogs whining).

We're using a clicker to shape this, but any marker would work.

➊ "touch" my hand with your nose
➋ I move my hand to my leg for her to touch
➌ I put two fingers in a peace ✌️ sign on my leg so that her nose makes contact with my leg
➍ I move to one finger on my leg
➎ I point to my leg and take my finger away as she taps
➏ I build persistence by only rewarding every second time

To increase the intensity of the nudge, I walk back so that she walks into me, which creates a harder nudge.

I kept using "touch" the whole time because the command for the action is going to become the anxiety behaviour which she will learn to respond to. Wait for part 2!

It’s been wonderful working with Telfair International Primary School, Mauritius the last few months! Riddley celebrated her first birthday at TIPS. We’ve made wonderful memories, and Riddley has helped so many children who were having a bad day, struggling with school anxiety, and just needed a fluffy friend! Looking forward to many more happy experiences with TIPS 🐾❤️

What does your dog need to be able to do as a therapy dog? These are the minimum requirements for a therapy dog, and are excellent skills for any dog to have. Above all, therapy dogs must love people and have great impulse control! If your dog loves people and has a calm demeanour, he/she might have the makings of an excellent therapy dog!

We are closely following Guide Dog puppy raising techniques. The training program is strictly R+ (positive reinforcement) which builds confidence, creativity, and calm behaviours (should you reward them). Riddley is already very happy settling and sleeping under the desk while we work, sometimes chewing on a given toy.

Can't believe we have had little Riddley for just over a week already! 9 weeks old and growing fast. Training wise she has come a long way and learnt so much already! We've spent the most time on food-induced recall, impulse control, and settling behaviours at home. She's not too bad with paw pad games and has just started learning to stay! She has also become comfortable in her crate and doesn't mind spending some time alone 😊.

She's been socialising with plenty of children and other dogs and is learning to be calm in new environments. Future therapy dog in the making 🐾🧡
