Everything that your horse consumes will have an impact on their overall health, which will be reflected in the quality of their hooves. This includes all feed, grasses, hay, forage, treats and medicines, as well as environmental factors, so it is important to be mindful of this, especially if you are trying to help your horse to grow their best feet.

If you are considering consulting a professional for feed advice, ask them first about the health of their own horses feet, and particularly whether or not they are sound without the need for shoes or boots, as both can mask inflamatory issues which would suggest something within the diet could be causing problems.

Too often, horses suffer pathologies in the hooves such as white line disease, event lines, thin soles, and thrush, which can be quickly resolved once the diet is cleaned up and simplified. Most horses don't require much more than supplementation with Salt and Magnesium, so long as they have access to fresh forage in the form of varied meadow grasses and a good meadow hay, and for horses who have their grazing restricted, we would also recommend providing a source of Vitamin E. If your horse does require a bucket feed to supply some extra calories, then from experience, we always recommend avoiding alfafa, sugar beet, wheat/oat by products, soya, molasses and anything high in sugars and starch.
