Q&A with CEM/CEF farming consultant, Mr Koon Chai Gan..

Customer: Why are my vegetable leaves full with holes? Can I eat leaves with holes? I remember someone said we must not eat leaves that were eaten by slugs..

Gan: There are two perspective to view vegetables with holes...

1. Normally insects will attack the weaker plants or help to destroy the unhealthy plants. It’s nature’s way of creating an ecological balance. Weather and other unforeseen circumstances cause plants to be imbalanced and attract insects but if their immunity is strong (just like human), the leaves are left with holes, without being completely destroyed.

2. Insects are vegetarian, so it’s safe to eat the leaves with holes. They don’t leave any dangerous viruses. Anyway when you buy those vegetables, you are not being cheated because holes has no weight.

Customer: Well, in that case, I can buy those vegetables with holes especially from those old ladies and men in the wet markets. That should be safe, or have less chemicals and insecticides produced, isn’t it?

Gan: It is also possible that due to pests resurgence (high population), it is not possible for the agrochemicals to kill all the pests in time, the holes remain even with the farmers applying more pesticides than before 😳. My advice, the safest way, is to buy organic vegetables or grow your own or know the farmers who provide your vegetables and fruits.

As we stay home during MCO, the plants just keep growing at CEF. The sugar cane has grown so well and juicy. Mr Gan and workers cleaned the sugar cane presser and bottled the juice to go out to Community Eco Market - CEM. Over the last one year, the manual sugar cane presser at CEF has become a novel attraction for visitors to the farm. Enjoy the video!

The ad for the Thai Health Promotion Foundation takes a light-hearted approach to discourage farmers from cultivating off-season vegetables with artificial fertilisers....

In reality, the approach applies to everything we demand of our food - pretty...hole-less...worm-less...juicy... big... seedless et cetera et cetera. Truly, the power lies with YOU, the consumers....your demand will create the supply so demand wisely...

We planted these two years ago, mainly because we could not find any organic fresh turmeric in the market for our kitchen use and had to rely on turmeric powder. Over the years, the herbs garden has become our open supermarket, we could harvest as much or as little as we wished and the turmeric leaves had been added into our many ulams and side dishes. Such is the blessings of nature and time....

CEM Power Rangers on the Road 2

This was our lunch box on the road yesterday, thanks to June Tan aka See Tow Poh, we could still get wholesome food while on the road, with all ingredients from CEM. We try to get your orders packed and delivered as early as possible so that we can limit our time on the road. Like you, we have our family and home to get back to.

So, why do we do what we do?

So that you use this time to get back to the kitchen and cook some fresh wholesome meals for your family and to support local organic farmers. In this era, food is so convenient that we no longer think about what we put into our body aside from taste. When you cook and eat at home, you write the health destiny for you and your family.

The second reason is so that we can work together to reduce some household plastics waste and create less harm to the environment during our mortal time here. CEM is one movement and delivery system that reduces single-use plastics waste instead of increasing it.

We thank you for all your positive feedback on the quality of our vegetables and hope with this, it can encourage some lifestyle changes once MCO is over 💪🏼❤️.

About us

Community Eco Farm (CEF) was first mooted on a car ride in one of organic farm visits under Community Eco Market (CEM) program, sometime in 2018. We wanted a space where people are connected with the process of growing safe and ethical food, a place where people can learn about wellness and regain their health. We also believe this is only possible through community effort because only together with like-minded people, we can create the community and environment we dream of.
