No, Your Dog Isn't "Guilty" or "Ashamed" — It's Scared:

If you’ve ever come home to find a mess and a dog giving you the “guilty look,” you might think they know they did something wrong.

But research shows that dogs do not actually feel guilt. Instead, what we interpret as guilt could be a complex display of fear, submission, and anxiety meant to appease us, their human companions.

Studies, including research by Alexandra Horowitz and other animal behaviorists, have found that dogs display this look not based on whether they did something wrong, but rather in response to a scolding or in anticipation of displeasure.

For example, Horowitz’s 2009 study showed that dogs who were scolded—even if they hadn’t misbehaved—displayed the “guilty look” more intensely. Other studies, such as one by Ljerka Ostojić and colleagues, similarly found that the look isn’t a result of the dog’s actions but rather an attempt to defuse tension and avoid conflict.

Dogs are highly sensitive to cues in their environment, and the “guilty look” is likely their way of reducing social tension, a behavior rooted in pack dynamics.

Unfortunately, this can lead to misunderstandings. Scolding a dog after the fact may increase anxiety and result in a more pronounced guilty look, creating a cycle of stress without actually addressing the behavior.

Instead, experts suggest looking deeper into why the behavior occurred—whether the dog was bored, anxious, or confused by a change in routine.

Addressing these root causes can reduce problem behaviors more effectively than punishment. So next time you see that “guilty look,” remember it’s likely an appeal for peace, not an admission of guilt.

Scientists Confirm — There's a Simple Way to Communicate With Your Cat:

If your cat seems distant, it may be that you’re not communicating in a way they understand.

A study published in Scientific Reports offers a simple solution: smile the cat way—by slowly blinking.

Researchers from the University of Sussex found that narrowing your eyes and giving a slow blink can make cats, even those unfamiliar to you, more likely to approach and engage. This behavior mimics the relaxed, half-closed-eye expression cats use when content, helping to build trust and connection.

The researchers conducted two experiments to explore this interaction. In the first, cat owners slow-blinked at their pets, and the cats were more likely to return the gesture compared to when no interaction occurred. In the second experiment, researchers (who were strangers to the cats) performed the same slow-blink and found that not only did the cats blink back, but they were also more likely to approach an outstretched hand. This suggests that slow blinking serves as a bridge between human and feline communication, helping cats feel safe and comfortable with people.

Understanding how to communicate with cats could improve their emotional well-being, particularly in stressful environments like shelters or veterinary clinics. Cats often avoid direct eye contact, interpreting it as a threat, but the slow blink signals friendliness and openness. Psychologist Tasmin Humphrey explains that this insight into cat behavior could enhance public understanding and welfare for an often-misunderstood species. So next time you encounter a feline friend, try a slow blink—you might just spark a silent conversation.
