Apparently some breeders in Russia are attempting to justify their obese hamsters by claiming them to be show quality animals. I wanted to take a moment to speak about hamsters and ideal sizes, and is here to be an example.

Syrian hamsters can be anywhere from 100-300g. I personally feel that 180-250g is a good weight range, but so many things can affect weight - genetics and front hand nutrition to name a couple.

The photos are of Miel right after weaning her pups. You can see the extra flaps of skin under her arms and around her belly (circled), as you would expect from a hamster who had just finished nursing. She was about 285g here, and much larger than her body type ideally should be.

Unfortunately, the breeders in Russia are arguing that this body type is what a show hamster should be. No. Those flaps are not normal, especially to the large degree they are seen on their animals. While some extra skin and chub happens and is normal, we should not be promoting obese hamsters, especially not as show quality.

Here are some excerpts from the National Hamster Council's show standards:
The hamster shall be as large as possible, but not fat.
The flesh shall be firm with no surplus fat.

In fact, the NHC docks up to 5 points for excess fat!

As breeders, we should be breeding our animals in a way that improves upon them generation after generation. While bigger is often better, we need to step back and realise when we, as owners and breeders, are harming our pets... Whether that be through overfeeding, general obesity, or even robbing them of their fur... But that's a topic for another future post.

PS: Miel has since slimmed down to a healthy 240g and is doing great. No more water wings. 😊
