Dogs do not understand yelling and what they did wrong when you do yell at them. Instead, it makes them scared and anxious. Yelling at your dog is not productive and it doesn’t teach them anything. We need to guide our dogs and teach them.

October is Pit Bull awareness month so this Fact Friday I’m focusing on the bullies. (Although for me, every month is Pit Bull awareness month.)
1. Pit Bull is not actually a breed.
2. Their jaws DO NOT lock. In fact, no dog can do this.
3. From temperament testing, pit bulls ranked high as one of the most affectionate and least aggressive. Your favorite Golden Retriever is more aggressive!

Sometimes earning trust means just standing still ♥️ The classic “reach your hand out so they can smell” as a greeting is old and doesn’t work. Let the dog come to you. For an anxious dog with trauma any movement toward them is seen as scary. Let them come to you. It’s important to be calm and patient.

One of my favorite tools for dog play and enrichment is the flirt pole. Just think of it as a giant cat want toy. It’s great for dogs with high prey drives and it really tires them out. Perfect for energetic pups!
