Where are all the chihuahua lovers at??? Years ago I’d do probably five chihuahua nail trims and at least two or three for bath nails and deshed each week. Most of those passed away. I think I only have about six chihuahuas on my client list now. They are the most loyal loving little lap dogs. They have a bad reputation for being biters. Truthfully they are just protective of their people and their territory.

A few things to keep in mind when it comes to having older dogs groomed.
*older dog loose muscle and get tired easy. Lots of time they keep sitting during the haircut.
* older dogs often times have bad teeth so holding, brushing and clipping thier face can be uncomfortable for them.
* older dogs start to struggle with vision so they can get scared easily with tools being used around their face.
* just like humans often times dogs hair and skin thins as they age.
It’s very important to keep senior dogs groomed regularly because they don’t tolerate dematting. With senior dogs the goal it to keep them comfortable and give them a decent groom without stressing them and causing unnecessary discomfort. Please remember your senior dogs groom may not look as great as it once did.

With mild Kentucky winters dogs need to be on flea and tick preventative year round. However I know lots of folks skip the winter months since the dogs are outdoors as often. Now’s the time to start applying topical, giving the pill or putting that Seresto collar on. Spring and fall are these worst times for fleas and ticks!! This little pest had already attached and burrowed his head in deep. (No Hartz or Sergents cheap topical) Get the good stuff!!!

My March schedule is maxed out. Then I’m off the first week in April for spring break. Please keep your pre booked appointment. I’m having trouble with people wanting to push appointments back several weeks. For most dog breeds that’s not an option at my shop. I groom one on one doing all the work myself. Overgrown or matted dogs take longer to groom. My prices and time slots are set up for well maintained dogs that come every 6-8 weeks.

Just a reminder…… I do not open at 8:00 when school is canceled. So no early drop offs and any 8:00 appointments will be rescheduled. In snow and freezing temperatures it’s takes me twice as long to care for my outdoor pets and get into town.

The shop is closed today and the plan is to be closed tomorrow Tuesday 16th as well. Texts have been sent to clients with appointments. With single digit temperatures and the potential for more snowfall tonight it’s just makes sense. I’m pretty sure no one will be upset. Safety first! If we don’t get anymore snow and roads and sidewalks are clear I will go in tomorrow afternoon if any of my Monday or Tuesday people want me to. Stay warm and safe everyone!

Next weeks weather is showing some single digits and possible snow. If school is canceled then all 8:00 appointments are definitely canceled. If we’re in single digits and/or roads/sidewalks are slick all appointments will be postponed. I slipped earlier in the week and I’m dealing with a knee injury. I’m definitely not able to spread salt and clear sidewalks or pack dogs to and from vehicles in frigid slick conditions.

Standard policy at businesses that work by appointment is to give a 24 hour notice if you have to cancel your appointment. If you no show or cancel last minute you are expected to do the right thing and pay for your missed appointment. Especially in small businesses. We depend on that money. Of course legit emergencies are an exception. Another exception is snow covered or ice covered roads. Safety of my clients is top priority. If the roads are icy or we have snow coming down and it may get bad fast I’m perfectly fine with people canceling. I don’t want anyone out on bad roads especially with dogs in the vehicle. If it’s real bad I won’t be there either.

I schedule everyone’s next visit and give them an appointment card at pickup. My clients can choose to come back between 4 and 8 weeks. This is based on each individual dogs needs and the clients preference. Requiring clients stay in a schedule and prebooking appointments is a great concept. It’s better for the dog because they stay in good shape and don’t get matted or overgrown. It’s best for owner because they know when the next appointment is and can schedule around it. It’s best for the groomer because it eliminates having to stop and answer the phone while grooming.

Small dog nail trims are still ONLY $12 here. That does include them being filed smooth. The $12 is for short hair dogs under 20 pounds only. If they have long hairy feet I must shave out the pads and trim the paw hair first so I can clearly see the toenail. This also ensures the hair won’t get caught up in the Dremel when I’m filing. Cost on long hair nail trim is usually around $20. All nail trims do require an appointment. I have no one to assist me so I cannot do aggressive dogs.

When a client passes it’s never easy. Mia’s passing hit extra hard. I had groomed this sweet girl her entire life nearly 19 years. She was a little black fur ball at 10 weeks old at her first visit. I can still see her parents Mike and Jess packing her into that appointment. That was before I ever opened this location. I will forever miss and remember sweet Mia.
