Want to rant a little about the topic doing it's rounds on Facebook as well as the petition to ban the breed. FIRST there are no bad dogs only BAD humans and SECOND there are no bad breeds there are only BAD breeders. There are factors to consider when getting any dog breed and it starts with you;
* Do I know what the breed I am getting, or have I done my research
* Can I be what the breed needs by setting boundaries
* Can I answer what drives the dog (hunting, herding, guarding etc) or am I going to chuck it in a yard and only take it out when I have time.
*Is the breeder reputable and NO KUSA registered breeders are not reputable, do your homework, they are a database only!!! Reputable breeders do health checks, temperament checks and normally keep your puppy till they are between 8 and 10 weeks old. Your puppy comes with a contract and bloodline i.e is registered with the specific breed's federation.
You will pay upwards of N$10 000.00 per puppy. This is because the breeder has spent a lot time, effor and money to make sure your puppy is healthy and stable.
If you aren't prepared to pay that, then wait for the breed to be available at a rescue, don't buy cheap dogs, adopt!!!
Taking all of the above into consideration and what I see daily on the dog groups in Nam and SA no wonder the Pitbull breed is on the ban list. The breeders are breeding them to be aggressive because that is what the public wants. They feel their social system is failing them and they have zero faith in the police.
The problem is it's too late to turn back the clock, too many of these dogs are with backyard breeders already. And a backyard breeder is ANYONE not doing what reputable breeders do. YOU are the reason dogs land up in the SPCA's, fighting rings, rehomed continuously or PTS. It's starts with you!!! The amount of terriers and terrier crosses waiting to be rehomed (and you can set your watch by their age between 7 - 18months) and PTS in this country is staggering (jack russels, pitbulls, bullterriers staffies etc.)
So as much as I hate to say it, the dogs don't deserve to have been failed this way and since the government and local authorities can't and won't do anything, the breed will be banned. And then you can thank the backyard breeders and owners simply leaving their dogs in yards day after day building up frustration until one day they get out and it's over.
And it won't stop at the Pitbull.
