The Ultimate, Holistic Reactive Dog Training Course to Help your Dog Live their Best Life

Reactivity in dogs is much like an unwelcome mystery, leaving you puzzled and often on edge. Have you ever paused to consider why managing reactivity feels like navigating a labyrinth? Each bark or lunge is your dog's way of communicating a deeper need—perhaps for space, safety, or peace.

Three Key Steps to Behavioral Change:

1. Manage the Environment: Adjust your surroundings to prevent stressors. This includes choosing quieter walking paths and providing safe spaces at home where your dog can retreat when overwhelmed or decompress after a stressful event.

2. Recognize Stress Signals: You need to learn to spot early signs of stress in your dog’s body language. This knowledge allows you to support them so they can choose alternative behaviours rather than reacting.

3. Reinforcement is the answer: Consistently look for rewardable behaviours, no matter how small. Support and reward your dog every time they choose non-reactive behaviours. Positive reinforcement makes these behaviours more appealing and likely to be repeated.

What subtle signs does your dog show when they're beginning to feel stressed? Let us know in the comments. The more we describe our dog's behaviour the more we see!

👉 If you find yourself puzzled by your dog's reactivity, consider booking a Diagnostic Call with Julia and Barbara (https://barking-up-the-right-tree.newzenler.com/1-1-booking/diagnostic-call/register). Or drop your questions in the FB group for our next live session.

Together, we can create a world where dogs are family, where kindness rules, and where you and your dog live your best lives together 🐶❤️

Progress in my house is all about the little things. It's been almost a year now since Nawa was attacked by another dog, sustaining several puncture wounds and a broken front leg. We had just reached a major milestone in our agility game and were looking forward to testing our skills in more competitions. Instead, Nawa was on total crate rest for months.
But our agility setback was minor compared to the implications this had on our home life. Nawa's confidence was severely shaken, and my youngster, Falken who was just 10 month at the time, started barking and lunging whenever he saw Nawa pass by without being allowed to interact. After months of crate rest, reintegrating Nawa and Falken into their normal routines proved challenging. Nawa continued to avoid Falken, who became increasingly obsessed, and at some point, the two dogs got into a fight.

As you can imagine, things were not well in the Paterson home. At one point, a well-meaning friend gently suggested that perhaps the two boys might never be able to live together. I refused to accept that suggestion.

Dogs have an emotional life just like we do. We’re only just beginning to give mental health and emotional well-being the attention they deserve for us humans. But dogs are mammals, just like us, and much of their neurobiology is very similar to ours, as Julia explained in a recent master class with our Reactivity Master Mind group.

My mentor, Susan Garrett, has shared strategies to help dogs in her own household not just get along but actually like each other. I was determined to put her wisdom into action and solve this puzzle.

I just kept working at it one step at a time, refusing to give up. Gradually, things got better. Sure, sometimes it looked like we were back at square one, but I reminded myself that progress is never linear. And (this is super important!) John and I continued to make a point of celebrating every little improvement we saw, over and over. That kept us positive.

And here we are today, almost a year later, and the boys are hanging out in the same room, playing together, and swapping their chew bones. I cannot begin to express how happy this makes me.

Oh, and by the way, Nawa is back to agility too.
