Meet Petrus, our cleaner/kennel hand🧹🧽🧼🫧

At Barker & Bone, hygiene is at the top of our list when it comes to the day-to-day managing of the kennels! Boarding doggos’ bedding, toys etc gets washed regularly in F10SCXD solution and then out to dry in the sun to kill all the germs. 🦠
Afterwards we thoroughly spray all equipment with F10SCXD and let it dry again.

Our kennels also get deep cleaned on a daily basis with special soaps and again with F10SCXD to ensure the best possible hygiene and stay for your doggo children!

Petrus was appointed to clean the whole day long, every day - that is all he does! Thank you Petrus for your hard work and dedication for all our furry children🐾

With extensive experience as an animal caretaker at SPCA Windhoek, she brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her role.

Mariina holds an Honors degree in Agriculture with a focus on Animal Science, equipping her with a strong foundation in animal behavior, health management, and nutrition.

Her deep passion for animals fuels her commitment to upholding the highest standards of animal care and welfare while efficiently overseeing kennel operations to ensure a safe and nurturing environment for all our animals.

🤞🏻Training tips by Barker & Bone

1. Be Consistent with Commands

• Use the same words for commands each time, such as “sit,” “stay,” or “down.” Consistency helps dogs understand what you’re asking.

2. Focus on Positive Reinforcement

• Reward good behavior with treats, praise, or toys. Positive reinforcement builds a stronger bond and motivates the dog to repeat the behavior.

3. Use Short, Frequent Training Sessions

• Dogs have short attention spans, so aim for 5-10 minute training sessions multiple times a day rather than one long session.

4. Be Patient and Calm

• Dogs can sense frustration, so stay calm. Patience is especially important when working on challenging behaviors.

5. Establish Clear Boundaries

• Use commands and physical boundaries (like gates) to help your dog understand which areas or actions are off-limits.

6. Train with Distractions Gradually

• Start training in a quiet environment, then slowly introduce distractions. This builds focus, even in stimulating surroundings.

7. Socialize Early and Often

• Expose your dog to different people, environments, and other dogs. This reduces anxiety and reactive behavior in unfamiliar settings.

8. Set Up Controlled Encounters for Reactive Dogs

• For dogs prone to reactivity, practice impulse control and threshold training in a controlled setting. Use gradual exposure to situations that typically trigger reactions.

9. Teach Commands Beyond the Basics

• Commands like “wait” and “ok” can be useful to control impulses. Practicing commands like “leave it” can help with reactivity toward other animals.

10. End Training Sessions on a Positive Note

• Finish with a command the dog knows well, and reward them. This reinforces a positive association with training.

We provide special care, to our special needs doggo’s. Why would I say this absolutely normal dog is ‘special needs’?

I own a pug myself, and know the challenges one faces regarding their health (fitness, breathing, over heating etc).

Thus; these dogs go on individual super short and slow walks in cool conditions (early mornings or late afternoons) to ensure the absolute BEST care in the world for them and to ensure their comfortability during their stay🤍🐾

🧡Doggy Daycare/KindergartenPerfect for energetic pups who need to play, burn off some energy, and socialize with other dogs. Ideal for puppies, our daycare offers supervised playtime and socialization from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Please note, our Kindergarten program focuses on fun and interaction, not formal training. Kindergarten is only for social Doggos.🐾

This might seem like an easy, simple exercise, but let me tell you—this Husky came to me with serious issues: extreme leash pulling, bolting out of gates, and escaping from all kinds of places. By day three at Barker & Bone, I’m able to give him leash freedom, and wherever I go, he follows without me needing to call or command him. I have his full attention the entire time. This is exactly what Barker & Bone is all about—turning the "impossible" into reality. It’s truly amazing!

🩷🐾This GSD puppy came to me as raw as they get—she couldn't even sit! Fast forward to just three days of training, and she’s already nailing sit, platz, and even started heel work (we’ll keep refining that). Plus, she’s socializing like a pro with other dogs. Luna is absolutely crushing it—what a star!

Dearest Barker & Bone friends and community, one of our own needs a new home ♥️ Our sweet EZY’s family unfortunately will be relocating out of country and despite looking into all options Ezy can’t move with them. Ezy is a much loved family pet and only child. She’s been with us at Doggy Daycare for over a year and she’s a WONDERFUL little girl. Her trainers and our B&B staff describe Ezy as playful, a social butterfly and happy go lucky!! Ezy is not reactive but can play rough sometimes, however she’s very aware and responsive to social cues 💛🐾 Ezy has completed Obedience training and Game Breaking at Barker & Bone. She’s house trained, medium energy, loves her walks, car trained and travels well and she LOVES toys, her favorites being balls and frisbees. She’s even tempered, doesn’t jump and a real love bug. She has excellent recall, she’s completed her off leash obedience training and she walks wonderfully on a loose leash. Ezy grew up with 2 young children so she’s great with kids and strangers. Her best friends at Doggy Daycare is Alfie, Azula, Brandy, Macarena, Tjiuee and especially Loki 💙but she gets on with everyone. Ezy is 1.5yrs and is sterilized, her vaccines and parasite treatment is fully up to date. She does require daily mobiflex for joint supplements due to an old fracture that’s fully healed. Ezys family are devastated to leave her behind and we’re fully committed to help them and her find the BEST new home to ensure a smooth transition our Trainers are offering to help with introductions to a new family and their pets in the form of 3 at home consultations and evaluations free of our usual hourly charge.
