DID YOU KNOW?!
The Rouen is a heavyweight breed of domesticated duck.Rouens are raised primarily for meat, exhibition,or as general purpose ducks. Since they are not prolific egg layers, Rouen ducks are most commonly bred for their meat. The breed originated in France sometime before the 19th century.

The plumage coloring of both the Rouen drake and the Rouen duck are nearly identical to that of the Mallard drake and Mallard duck. The Rouen color pattern is referred to as gray.Males have dark yellow bills, green heads, white collars, black tail coverts and dark, ashy brown tail feathers, a dark gray upper back and light gray lower body, a deep claret breast, and bright orange legs and feet. The female Rouen hens are a consistent shade of mahogany brown, with a brown crown and tan eye-stripes extending from bill to the back of the eyes, and a brown bill.

ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE :
-source of meat
-can also serve as ornamental pets in parks and homes 🏡

Did you know?!
The Siamese fighting fish are endemic to the central plain of Thailand, where they were first domesticated at least 1,000 years ago, among the longest of any fish. They were initially bred for aggression and subject to gambling matches akin to cockfighting. Bettas became known outside Thailand through King Rama III (1788–1851), who is said to have given some to Theodore Cantor, a Danish physician, zoologist, and botanist.
Bettas are well known for being highly territorial, with males prone to attacking each other if housed in the same tank; without a means of escape, this will usually result in the death of one or both fish. Female bettas can also become territorial towards one another in confined spaces.Bettas are exceptionally tolerant of low oxygen levels and poor water quality, owing to their special labyrinth organ, a characteristic unique to the suborder Anabantoidei that allows for the intake of surface air.
In addition to its worldwide popularity, the Siamese fighting fish is the national aquatic animal of Thailand which remains the primary breeder and exporter of bettas for the global aquarium market. Despite their abundance as pets, B. splendens is listed as "vulnerable" by the IUCN, due to increasing pollution and habitat destruction.

Siamese fighting fish display complex behavioural patterns and social interactions, which vary among individual specimens.Research indicates they are capable of associative learning, in which they adopt a consistent response following exposure to new stimuli.

Betta fish can exhibit unusual sleep behaviors, often resulting in new betta owners assuming that their betta fish has died.

Ever heard of The Swedish Blue?!
The Swedish blue is a breed of domestic duck originated in the former dominion of Swedish Pomerania (now in north-west Poland and north-east Germany). It is known as a good forager

The Swedish Blue is a medium-sized bird: drakes weigh some 3–4 kg, ducks about 2.5–3.5 kg. It is rather shorter and broader in body shape than breeds such as the Cayuga or Orpington;the body is rounded, plump and full-breasted, the back is straight and fairly flat, and is about half as long again as it is broad. The body is carried at an angle of about 20° to the horizontal. The head is long, oval and finely made. There are three colour varieties, of which only one the blue is recognised in the standards.

Economic importance
-Meat
-lay about 100–150 white or tinted (blue or green) eggs per year, of some 80–90 g in weight.

Ever heard of the Razanandrongobe?!

Razanandrongobe (meaning "ancestor [of the] large lizard" in Malagasy) is a genus of carnivorous ziphosuchian crocodyliform from the Middle Jurassic of Madagascar. It contains the type and only species Razanandrongobe sakalavae, named in 2004 by Simone Maganuco and colleagues based on isolated bones found in 2003. The remains, which included a fragment of maxilla and teeth, originated from the Bathonian-aged Sakaraha Formation of Mahajanga, Madagascar. While they clearly belonged to a member of the Archosauria, perceived to be the predecessor of the modern day crocodiles.

Razanandrongobe is the largest known Jurassic non-marine member of the Mesoeucrocodylia, and the largest member of the Notosuchia overall. In life, the length of its skull likely surpassed that of Barinasuchus, which has been estimated at 88 centimetres (35 in) long.

The volcanic snail, which is the only animal in the world that has iron in its skeleton. Also known as the sea pangolin, it uses iron to build its shell and generate metal scales that cover its flesh, essentially becoming a snail with a metal armor.

The shell is of a unique construction, with three layers; the outer layer consists of iron sulphides, the middle layer is equivalent to the organic periostracum found in other gastropods, and the innermost layer is made of aragonite. The foot is also unusual, being armored at the sides with iron-mineralised sclerites.

This species inhabits the hydrothermal vent fields of the Indian Ocean. It lives adjacent to both acidic and reducing vent fluid, on the walls of black-smoker chimneys, or directly on diffuse flow sites.

1929 Sieger
Utz von Haus Schutting SchH III
SZ # 331999
Breeder: Dr. W. Funk; Hannover Germany
Born: March 12, 1926

"Utz is a picture of balance, a front with long upper arm and well laid back shoulder, good back, croup and he is, up on his feet, strong pasterns. He was considered ideal. When we look at the pedigree of Utz it is hard not to notice the prevalence of Hettal. He also traces to Flora through the two from the B litter Reideckenburg and Diethelm from the D litter. The tail female line goes back to the unknown that were probably herding stock. He also traces to Von Stephanitz’s other herding lines, (Audifax and Adalo) through Diethelm and Falko respectively.

When Klodo became Sieger in 1925 he was just starting to be known for his breeding worth even though he was four years old. He went to the United States shortly after that but the German records show that he produced 634 progeny before he went.

If he were at stud for two years it would mean that he produced 317 offspring a year for his two years at stud, about 25 a month or four litters - not bad.

Even though the quality of Klodo's get was obvious it was not until 1929 that one became Sieger. That son was Utz von Haus Scheutting. He also left the country for the United States shortly after becoming Sieger. His progeny numbers do not match those of Klodo. Utz shows just 177 offspring in the short time he was at stud in Germany. It could be because he was so different. They did not realize his breeding value until after he had gone.

There was a thing about missing teeth that would have deterred a large number of German breeders. Utz was the great mutation. He totally dominated everything he was bred to, this domination extended throughout the world for years to come. It is as if he had started his own breed. In Germany today the breed is still built around the Utz legacy."

Sire Born : 20. August 1921

Von Stephanitz had become alarmed at the trend in the breed toward oversized square dogs. Other problems included lack of steady temperament and faults of dentition. He and the breed wardens decided drastic measures needed to be taken. At the 1925 Sieger show von Stephanitz selected Klodo von Boxberg as world sieger. This dog was dramatically different from the type of dog that had gone before him. He was of lower station, deeper and longer in body, short in loin and with a far-reaching gait. As it turned out Klodo proved to be a potent sire, successfully heralding a "new" type of shepherd. That same year Klodo was imported to America by A. Gilbert of Maraldene Kennels in Hamden, Connecticut. Klodo, through a number of important sons and daughters, is largely responsible for the faults and virtues of modern North American lines.

Biomechanical fundamentals of canine locomotion in the trotting dog

I occasionally make comparisons between the German Shepherd Dog and the grey wolf. And for good reason - it is considered by most paleontologists and scientists to be the GSD's ancestor and arguably the worlds most efficient trotting canine.

Occasionally I see cheap comments that suggest maybe I am saying the GSD should look like the grey wolf, and of course that is absurd, a bit like me criticising some aspect of the form of a human being and receiving a comment that suggests I am saying humans should look like Neanderthal man!

The grey wolf was in a number of key respects, including its colour, a desired outward form when Captain von Stephanitz created the breed, however there were some key characteristics that he amended to that form that make the two very different!

One of them was this.:

Captain von Stephanitz wanted endurance associated with a long stride, not endurance based on lots of short strides - like a wolf. He wanted longer and therefore less strides to cover the same distance.. This in his mind, would make the German Shepherd more superior than the grey wolf in terms of a long distance trotting dog - another story for another time based on the cost of energy consumption per mile.

To achieve this meant the German Shepherd Dog required the same straight back (thoracolumbar), long pelvis, the same perfectly balanced bones of the fore and hindquarter, but longer femur/tibia/scapula/humerus bones and more fore and hind angulation. This increase in bone length and bone angle created more trunk/chest depth and less foreleg length, more angle to the pelvis/croup, a lower hip/knee position and consequently a slight slope to the back. As the angulation gets excessive this increases tibia torque and hock instability.

I believe knowing this background and reasoning, assists serious students of the breed to better understand it especially in terms of canine locomotion.

07/05/2023

Fear aggression in dogs is a form of self-defense and may be expressed toward people, other animals or even objects. When a dog feels threatened, they may use body language or behaviors to drive the threat away, increasing the distance between themselves and the threat.

It is characterized by rapid nips or bites because a fearful dog is motivated to bite and then run away. Sometimes the aggression doesn't begin with clear threats. A fearful dog might not show her teeth or growl to warn the victim off.

Fear aggression in dogs is a treatable problem if we understand why the dog is aggressive and commit to a behavior modification plan that decreases the dog’s anxiety.

This month marks 124th Birthday of the GREATEST BREED IN THE WORLD.

The German Shepherd Dog.

Eternal appreciation to Capt. Max von Stephanitz.

Happy Birthday, German Shepherd Dog!

In the 1890s, Captain Max von Stephanitz, a young German cavalry officer, decided to develop a national breed of shepherd dogs. Max von Stephanitz was a very educated man, fond of shepherd dogs and appreciated very high their working abilities. He is known as the father of the breed. April 3, 1899 is considered to be the birthday of The German Shepherd Dog. On that day Max von Stephanitz purchased a herding dog on a dog show. The dog's name was Hektor Linksrhein (later named Horand von Grafrath) and it became a forefather for present German Shepherd Dogs and the first registered GSDs. Horand von Grafrath won the first German Shepherd Dog show that was held by Max von Stephanitz. He founded the Verein fur Deutsche Schaferhunde, the German Shepherd Dog breeders' organization and was named its first president. His efforts were not in vain. The German Shepherd Dog quickly became popular. They proved to be very diversified dogs. GSDs are widely used in police and military work. They earned the reputation as good family companion as well. The German Shepherd Dog became the first dogs used as Guide Dogs for the blind.

Did you know?!
The QUAGGA is a subspecies of the plains zebra that was endemic to South Africa until it was hunted to extinction in the late 19th century. It was long thought to be a distinct species, but early genetic studies have supported it being a subspecies of plains zebra. A more recent study suggested that it was the southernmost cline or ecotype of the species. The quagga is believed to have been around 257 cm (8 ft 5 in) long and 125–135 cm (4 ft 1 in – 4 ft 5 in) tall at the shoulder. It was distinguished from other zebras by its limited pattern of primarily brown and white stripes, mainly on the front part of the body. The rear was brown and without stripes, and appeared more horse-like. The distribution of stripes varied considerably between individuals. Little is known about the quagga's behaviour, but it may have gathered into herds of 30–50. Quaggas were said to be wild and lively, yet were also considered more docile than the related Burchell's zebra. They were once found in great numbers in the Karoo of Cape Province and the southern part of the Orange Free State in South Africa.
After the European settlement of South Africa began, the quagga was extensively hunted, as it competed with domesticated animals for forage. Some were taken to zoos in Europe, but breeding programmes were unsuccessful. The last wild population lived in the Orange Free State; the quagga was extinct in the wild by 1878. The last captive specimen died in Amsterdam on 12 August 1883. Only one quagga was ever photographed alive, and only 23 skins exist today. In 1984, the quagga was the first extinct animal whose DNA was analysed.

Extinct species: NGANGDONG TIGER
The Ngandong tiger is an extinct subspecies of tiger that inhabited the Sundaland region of Indonesia during the Pleistocene epoch between 2.5 million to 10,000 years ago. The Ngandong tiger may have been larger than the modern tigers with males possibly weighing 400 kilograms (880 lb) which would make it the larger than the largest extant tiger subspecies such as the Bengal and Siberian tigers and rendering it among the largest felids known to have ever lived. The few remains of the Ngandong tiger suggest that it would have been about the size of a modern Bengal tiger. However, given the size of other remains, it may have been larger than a modern tiger. A large male could have weighed up to 400 kg (880 lb), in which case, it would have been heavier than the largest extant tiger subspeciest, and similar in size to Panthera atrox (which could have weighed up to 420 kg), rendering it among the largest felids known to have ever lived

Prey of this powerful cat may have included the bovines Bubalus palaeokerabau an extinct species of water buffalo, Malyan tapirs, Javan rhinos, a variety of deer, the juveniles of Stegodon and the extinct elephant Elephas hysudrindicus and hominids such as Homo erectus and early modern humans.

📌 on “MACAWS”
Macaws are a group of New World parrots that are long-tailed and often colorful. Proportionately larger beaks, long tails, and relatively bare, light-coloured medial (facial patch) areas distinguish macaws from other parrots. Sometimes the facial patch is smaller in some species and limited to a yellow patch around the eyes and a second patch near the base of the beak in the members of the genus Anodorhynchus. A macaw's facial feather pattern is as unique as a fingerprint.
The largest macaws are the hyacinth, Buffon's (great green) and green-winged macaws. While still relatively large parrots, mini-macaws of the genera Cyanopsitta, Orthopsittaca and Primolius are significantly smaller than the members of Anodorhynchus and Ara. The smallest member of the family, the red-shouldered macaw, is no larger than some parakeets.
Macaws, like other parrots, toucans and woodpeckers, are zygodactyl, having their first and fourth toes pointing backward.
ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE
-Macaws eat a variety of foods including seeds, nuts, fruits, palm fruits, leaves, flowers, and stems. Safe vegetables include asparagus, beets, bell peppers, broccoli, butternut,
-Macaws are known to be capable of digesting certain toxins
-Macaws are beautiful creatures and as such are used as side attractions in tourist centers as they are such wonderful creatures to behold
