That stressful look after debeaking about 1000 layer birds with my team ,Before we were called, mortality was increasing daily not because the birds were diseased... The cause of mortality was cannibalism... On getting there, some of the things we did was to
1.Isolated the injured birds
2.Applied gentian violet on the injured part
3.Beak trimmed the flocks...
Mortality is now ZER0 from the call we received yesterday...
Beak trimming is the partial removal of the beak of poultry, especially layer hens and turkeys. It may also be performed on quail and ducks... Most commonly, the beak is shortened permanently, although regrowth can occur... Beak trimming is a preventive measure to reduce damage caused by injurious pecking such as cannibalism, feather pecking, egg pecking and vent pecking, and thereby improve livability.
Beak trimming can be carried out at various age depending on your preference. The most common age for birds to be beak-trimmed are at day old(most common), 5-10days old, 4-6 and 8-12 weeks old...
