A very funny incident happened at a Veterinary clinic that belongs to one of my former bosses. On this particular day, a client presented a sick puppy to the clinic. Based on the outcome of the preliminary examinations, a rapid test was required for confirmatory diagnosis. The outcome of the test revealed that the sick puppy is positive to the canine virus called Parvo Viral enteritis (Parvovirus). Upon hearing the outcome of the test, when the doctors were not looking, without saying a word he walked out of the clinic, hopped on an already waiting bike and left the premises of the clinic while abandoning the dog at the clinic.
You can guess the reactions of the doctors. An absolute shocker for them. It may be funny but it just shows how irresponsible some pet owners are. This is just one of the many stories a lot of Veterinarians face in their practice.
Owning a pet is a very big responsibility. It goes beyond the level of acquiring or being gifted one. It goes beyond taking pictures with them and showing them off on social media and the likes. It requires a high level of commitment. This includes but not limited to feeding, healthcare, general care and also taking care of their environments ( cleaning, eradication of ticks etc).
And without trying to sound discouraging, owning a pet is not cheap. This is the reality. For a pet to be healthy and look attractive, it requires to be given quality food, regular checkups - once a month at the minimum- by a Veterinarian and not a quack that parade themselves as one, regular grooming etc. These are fundamentals of keeping a pet but they don't come cheap.
In conclusion, keeping a pet is an investment. An investment that is not limited to finance, it is one that also involves emotions and time. If you cannot devote your time, emotions and money it is just best you admire from afar.
