TREATMENT OF ABSCESS.

HAEMATOMA.

A haematoma is a pocket of blood that forms beneath the skin or in muscle tissue and is associated with a ruptured blood vessel. It usually arises from trauma particularly over the shoulders, flanks or the hind quarters. The most common site is the ear. This is common to the weaners following fighting or head shaking and rubbing associated with mange. Once sufficient pressure has built up in the tissues the haemorrhage stops and a clot is formed.

In some cases the haematoma may be infected and an abscess will develop. Always sample the fluid first by syringe and needle. If blood is withdrawn the haematoma is of recent origin and if serum is present it is long standing.

Clinical signs
This is a large swelling caused by haemorrhage beneath the skin into the subcutaneous tissue or muscles.

For Sows.
Blood from the v***a.
Head on one side.
Large swellings which develop suddenly.
The swellings contain blood or serum due to haemorrhage.

Weaners and Growers

Large swellings which develop suddenly.
The swellings contain blood or serum.

Causes
Fighting.
Mange.
Trauma.

Treatment.
Two options are required;
1. Fluid withdrawal method.
2. Incision method.

Fluid withdrawal method.
Follow the video above and see how it was done. This method is good especially when the animal is not isolated probably because of space.
Others will not be able to disturb the wound.

2. Incision method.
If the animal is alone or isolated, incise the affected part to remove the fluid.
Dress the wound with Hydrogen peroxide and apply penstrep or penicillin injection powder on it.

PRODUCING YOUR OWN CAMBOROUGH.
Someone once claimed that we cannot produce it that we don't have pure breed of LW and LR in Nigeria. He said that what we have in Nigeria is "good genetic materials" and totally disagreed with him. Sometimes when you don't visit another friend father's farm,you would think that your own father's farm is the greatest.

You can produce your own CAMBOROUGH without having to doubt if the animal you are buying is camborough or not. As long as you have pure Landrace and pure Large white,you can produce your own successfully.

In this system, two breeds are mated and the resulting female offspring are kept as replacements and mated to one of the breeds. In following generations, females are bred to the opposite breed of their sire.

METHODS;
Two different breeds are required e.g
LANDRACE and LARGEWHITE.
In the first year, select pure landrace MALE and pure largewhite FEMALE and vice versa.
Cross the two together to obtain LW×LR mix . Keep a single female(gilt) from their offsprings say (AB).
In the second year, pick a large white male since you have used Landrace in the first year and use it to cross the female you selected in the first year I.e (AB).
LW×AB= AAB.
In the third year, pick a landrace boar since you have used Large white in the second year and use it to cross the female AAB you selected in the second year.
LR×AAB=ABB.
In the fourth year,pick a Large white boar since you have used Landrace in the third year and use it to cross the female ABB you selected in the third year.
If you must continue to have more CAMBOROUGH,you must continue the process in a repeated manner.

You can have more than one set by selecting two or more females in the first generation.

NOTE: You are not using the same SIRE you used throughout; of course the boar would be incompatible with the offspring gilt and also later resulted to inbreeding.

TAKING YOUR ANIMALS' WEIGHT WITHOUT SCALE.
There are times that condition would warrant that you take the weight of your heaven animal but you could not because;
¶The animal is very heavy and you cannot subject it to hanging method as it would create a severe wound around their snout,couple with the fact that such animal requires up to 7 strong men to carry it.
¶ the physical condition of the animal would prevent you from doing so e.g pregnancy and sickness.
¶ the cost of electronic digital scale of 3000 capacity ranging from 250,000--270,000 Naira.
¶ and lastly because of the timing and urgency of such situation.

At this particular time,an alternative method that requires no stress neither does it cost the animals any pain is required.

The materials require is just your measuring tape and either your head or your small calculator.

get a measuring tape and place it under the pig just behind the front legs and measure the circumference of the pigs girth in meter as you can see in the attached video. This measurement is known as the HEART GIRTH.
Then measure the LENGHT of the pig along its back from the base of its ears to the base of its tail, again in meter as it is done in the video.

Now to calculate the pigs weight, first square the Heart Girth to get the Girth Result.
Then use the following formula.
Heart Girth square× Length ×69.3
You now have the weight of your pig in Kg.

Eg from the attached video;
the Heart girth =1.5m
Length of the pig = 1.7m.

Girth square = 1.5×1.5 = 2.25m
2.25×1.7×69.3
= 265kg.

This method has up to 98% accuracy.

F--O--O--T R--O--T.
FOOT ROT results from infection of the claw which becomes swollen and extremely painful around the coronary band(where hoof join the normal leg skin). It arises through pe*******on of the sole of the foot,cracks at the sole-hoof junction,or splitting of the hoof itself. It usually occurs in one foot and is more commonly seen in the hind feet, especially the larger outer claws,which carry proportionately more weight.

Infection sometimes penetrates the soft tissues between the claws,and this is refer to as FOOT ROT and when the abscess burst at this region,it is called BUSH FOOT.
As the infection progresses inside the hoof,the claw becomes enlarged and infected which result to inflammation of the joint called ARTHRITIS.

CAUSES.
¶ Sharp objects in the pen.
¶ Extremely rough surface of the pen.
¶ Low biotin level of food.
¶ Infection from fusiform bacteria after physical injury.

SIGNS THAT THEY HAVE FOOT ROT
Check the leaping animal when sleeping or lie down.
¶ Painful swollen of the toes region.
¶ Lameness.
¶ Visible swelling around the coronary band.

EFFECTS ON SOW/GILT.
¶ Lame sow/gilt is less likely to conceive as it will not be able to carry the boar's weight.
¶ They do have poor litters.
¶ They are more prone to abortion.

EFFECTS ON BOARS.
¶ They often have poor fertility.
¶ They produce small litters.
¶ They are useless to both pen mating and artificial Insemination (A.I) because it must mount the dummy before discharge of spermatozoa.

PREVENTIVE MEASURES.
¶ Make sure that your pen floor is not rough; it wears away hoof very fast.
¶ Wash and disinfect concrete surface regularly with disinfectant that are harmless to the pigs such as POLIDINE.
¶ You can practice deep litter system by using wood shavings as beddings

TREATMENT.
Give antibiotics for swollen leg eg. Pensrep at a rate of 1lm for 25kg body weight for 3 consecutive days.
If the animal has a severe pain,give anti-inflammatory drugs such as Diclofenac provided that the animal is not pregnant.
If the sole is damaged like the one in the attached video, prepare a solution of 1% formalin OR 5% Copper Sulphate with little disinfectant and penicillin powder,dip the foot in it as I did in the practical video at least for 6 days.

GETTING THE BEST FROM YOUR BOARS.
The boar is the most important animal on the farm and good management is essential to maintain health and maximize normal reproductive function.

when you first purchase your young boar,allow it to make physical contact(not intimate contact) with the female animals within the pen surroundings.

You must not allow the boar to be bullied by sows. unless this physical contact takes place, there is a risk of low sexual behavior with poor matings and poor shortened ejaculations.

such animals are often
√slow to mount .
√serve with reduced conception.
√show low farrowing rate.
√reduced litter size.

The same principle apply to the mature boar;he should have a regular contact with sows and regular mating activity. This should apply to boar use for heat detection and teasing.

Sometimes you may find your boar loosing interest at mating time,change the environment to a more stimulating one by moving it to another pen( all things being equal i.e no disease etc)

The following are often pointers to early arthritis,foot lesions and leg weakness;
Lameness.
Stiffness.
Difficult in rising.
Leaping.
When the young boar first arrives on the farm,always manage it carefully, without any aggression,and be extremely patient during the first, second and third mating. Don't put much pressure,don't kick it and don't overuse it.

For best results,provide him with a solid,well-bedded floor of either shavings,peat or straw. with that it is then likely to develop arthritis and become stiff and lame.

The floor surface in the mating pen is important. It should be smooth,not slip and well drained. If the floor surface becomes slippery,it should be properly washed. A rough floor can have abrasive effects on the prepuce and p***s.
TREATMENT OF ARTHRITIS IN BOAR
*Check under the sole to make sure there is no inflamed or opened wound.
*Inject the boar with Diclofenac (one vial) in one leg and also inject the other leg with PENSTREP at a rate 1ml/25kg body weight.
You can double the dose in a severe condition.
Give the above drugs for two consecutive days. Repeat the same procedures after one week.

HOW MUCH DO THEY NEED?
There are times you need to know the quantity of feed your animals required from certain period of time; annually,bi-annually or quarterly.
Preparing feed Budget is a crucial decision as it will help the farmer to know the cost of preparing such feed.

Feeding accounts up to 80% of total cost of producing an animal. Other costs like salary,drugs and maintenance can easily be adjusted.

(NOTE: Follow each step by reading to understand, otherwise you may be confused at some points...but if you finish it and you understood every step,you will be glad you did.)

In this article, I will be explaining how you can prepare a feed Budget either for yourself or for someone else within certain period of time.
For a better understanding,we are going to assume certain categories of animals for our calculations.

Let us assume that the following groups are in your farm and you need to know their average feed consumption withing 6 months( July-December).
4 Dry Sows
10 Weaners
3 Boars
9 Growers

Let us start from the 4 dry sows.
Dry sow is believed to have matured and maintain a flat rate feed consumption of 2kg feed/day to certain period of time.
The next step is to determine when these 4 dry sows crossed/will be crossed within 3-5 days after weaning.
Let us assume 2 will be crossed on 5th of July,one will be crossed on 20th of July while the last one will be crossed on 23rd of July.
The first 2 will farrow on October 29 and therefore will consume 2kg flat rate for 114+4 days;
118×2×2 =472kg.

After farrowing,the feed consumption moves from 2kg to 2.8kg per day during the 42days of lactating;
2×2.8×42 =235kg.
The remaining days for the sows will be 184--(118+42) =24days.
The remaining 24 days will be 2kg×2×24 = 96kg.
Therefore, total feed to be consumed by the 2 sows will be 472+96kg =803kg.

Let us calculate the one to cross on 20th July; it will farrow on 13th November and therefore will consume 2kg for( 20+114)days
134×2 =268kg
After farrowing,it will become 2.8×42=118kg. The remaining days will be 184--(134+42)=8days.
8×2=16kg.
Total =268+118+16=402kg

The last sow that will be crossed on 23rd July will farrow on November 16th and will consume 2kg for (23+114)
137×2kg =274kg.
After farrowing= 2.8×42 =118kg.
The remaining days will be
184--(137+42) =5days.
2×5=10kg
Total= 274+118+10
=402kg.

The next step is to calculate the average number of piglets to survive.
Let us propose the survival rate of the piglets of the 4 sows to be ratio 6:8:7:10 totalling 31 piglets.
The first two can be weaned at the same time,while the last two can also be weaned together due to the proximity of their farrowing date.

Calculating the feed consumption of the Weaners from the first two sows to farrow on October 29;
184--(October 42days) =December 10
Which means that the 14piglets(6+8)
have 21days to eat solid feed till the end of the year.

For the remaining 2,one will farrow on 13 November while the other will farrow on 16 November but both will be weaned at the same time.
The weaning date will be( Nov 16+43days) =December 28
Which means they will eat solid feed for 3 days.

Now let us calculate the total feed they will consume till December 31;

For 14 Weaners
The average weight of a weaned piglets should be 15kg and a pig will eat 4% of its body weight.
4% of 15kg=600grams or 0.6kg
0.6kg ×numbers of pig
0.6×21×14=176.4kg

For the other (7+10) Weaners that will eat for only 3 days;
0.6×3×17= 30.6kg.
Total feed to be consumed will be 176.4+30.6= 207kg.

The next one is 10 Weaners.
In the first month, average weight of 15×4%×30×10= 248kg.

2nd month average weight gain of 5kg =20×4%×31×10=372kg

3rd month average weight gain of 10kg =30×4%31×10= 620kg

4th month average weight gain of 15kg = 45×4%×31×10 =558kg.

5th month of average weight gain of 20 =65×4%×30×10=780kg.

The 6th month of average weight gain of 22kg = 87×4%×31×10= 1079kg.

Total= 248+372+620+558+780+1079
= 3657kg.

For 3 Boars.
Boar does not consume much like lactating sows. They will eat a flat rate of 2kg/day
2×3×184days= 1204kg

For 9growers of average weight of 40kg.
There is possibility that by the time they will reach 80kg,you may plan to sell them for meat,meaning that they only have two months with you.

Average weight =40kg.
Expected feed consumption for the first month =4%×40×9×31= 446kg.
2nd month=4%×60×9×31=670kg.
Total= 1116kg.

The total average feed required to feed the animals including the expected litters will be
803+804+3657+1204+1116=7584kg

Now you can calculate the average cost of your feeding plan;
If this happens to be my farm,my formulation of 20%Cp and energy of 2600kCal/kg with N160/kg will then cost ;
N160×7584kg= N1,213,440.

The above calculation is a careful concept of many years of my experience in pig rearing. You can never find it online.

For 3 Boars.

For 9growers of average weight of 40kg.

Farrowed 9:9 on 12/13 April,weaned today. 18/18 from two mothers in ratio 9:9. Had diarrhea in two occasions but tackled head on. This is what we do.This is who we are. LAK.

THEY EAT MORE BUT GROW LESS.

Sometimes as a pig farmer,you wonder why your animals eat like elephant but Grow like periwinkles....funning right?
They are 4 months, yet they are like animals that have just been weaned.

This is more of a question of DIGESTIBILITY among other factors that can reduce the growth rate of animals. Your animals are healthy,they are of good breeds,your routine management are really good; sometimes the ingredients you combined together are also averagely rich YET something is not going well.

DIGESTIBILITY is the fraction of a nutrient ingested(taken in,eaten) that is digested and absorbed (transported) by the body into the blood stream. It is the difference between what your animal eats and what it excretes.

Some farmers have turned their pigs to ruminant animals;they are fed with banana/plantain leaves,cassava leaves,moringa leaves more often than expected either because they belief some of those leaves have medicinal value or because they lack financial capacity to buy good balance diet feed. Some have the financial capacity but simply don't have the knowledge of making the right diet.

What do you expect when you mix Palm Kernel Cake (pkc) + brewery waste+ cassava peal for your animals? A bunch of junks that result to a single part of the diet. All are FILLERS and high source of fibre.

HOW DO YOU MEASURE YOUR DIGESTIBILITY POTENTIAL?
*Put the animals to be used in cage so that the f***l collection will be easier.
*Make sure the animal is healthy and without any health challenges.
*measure the feed in kg and record it
*Supply enough drink water to haste the consumption.
*Insert a collection bag behind the animal or better still put a container or polythene under the cage for collection.
*Collect and measure the feaces on the following day at regular time.
*Calculate the Apparent Digestibility thus;
Amount of feed eaten--amount of f***s/amount of feed eaten ×100.

Example;
Amount eaten= 2.5kg
Amount of f***s =2.4kg

AD =2.5-2.4/2.5×100
AD= 0.04×100
AD= 4%

to interpret this,it simply means that when your animal consumes 100kg of your diet, it only retains 4kg from 100kg which will form the muscle. That is to say, when your animal eats 100kg (all things being equal) it will gain 4kg as meat.
Note that out of this 4kg,few secretions even though so minute will still be inside urine.

So if your animal consumes ;
75kg in the first month (2.5×30)
100kg in the second month
115kg in the third month
therefore,total feed consumed in the 3 months will be
75+100+115 =290kg
4% of 290kg = 11.6kg.
It simply means that in 3 months your animal gained 11.6kg or will gain 11.6kg in the next 3 month if you only analysed and not feed them yet.

Let us see SOME FACTORS THAT CAN AFFECT DIGESTIBILITY.

1. The Specie of the Animal.
Pig is not a ruminant and therefore cannot digest forage with high fibre content.The ruminant is more efficient in the digestion of high-fibre, low protein forage; whereas the simple-stomached pig is more efficient in digestion of high protein, low-fibre feedstuffs. So too much of pkc,cassava peal,wheat offal,maize offal, rice bran will altomatically result to low digestibility.

2. Age: Very young or very old animals are usually less efficient in their digestion of feeds. In case of old animals, their ability to chew feed is impaired by worn out teeth. Declining health and reduced secretion of enzymes may adversely affect the digestibility at an advanced age.
Just the way the young ruminants can neither eat nor digest roughage until their digestive tracts, especially their rumens are developed,the same way your newly weaned pigs will digest little from whole grain,blood meal or cassava peal you are giving them. their feed has to be totally grounded.

Level of feeding

Generally, when more feed is consumed by the animal, the rate of passage of the digesta in the alimentary canal is faster and the digestibility declines due to lesser retention time. This effect has been significantly observed in ruminants and to some extent in swine as well. Therefore,create space between the feeding time at least 3 times daily.

Soaking

Soaking of grains like maize and feed like PKC in water before feeding generally increases digestibility. Your animals must have easy access to water when eating.
Your feed must not be too dusty neither too moist.

Addition of Additives: Additives e.g. enzymes and antibiotics in feed tend to increase digestibility. There are some commercial feed that has feed additive such as enzyme, saint leaves, antibiotics.
