If you have had dogs for some years, you may of the word 'mange' especially if you belong to a dog owner's community or dog group.

This skin infection is common in dogs and some dog owners have termed most skin infections as mange.

Mange will make your dog look unkempt and uninviting. The first sign you may notice if your dog has mange is hair loss. The hair loss may be all over the skin or in specific parts.

Some dogs may itch while others may have reddish skin with sores and some may be thickened.

The earlier you notice these signs the better because mange can cause serious hair loss and lead to other skin infections.

So once you notice any patches of hair loss, itching, or thickening of your dog's skin, take your dog to your vet immediately for proper diagnosis and treatment.

All the best with your dog.

As a general rule, if your dog food is from a company that ensures that their products are balanced and complete then your dog does not need supplements. Now, the issue is that some of these processed dog foods do not meet the standard nutritional requirements for dogs.

If your dog is on homemade food, you may need to include a supplement so as to balance the required minerals that may not be available in the right amount in the food ingredients.

Some dog supplements are:
1. Multivitamins: supplements vitamins and minerals that are needed by your dog's body but not available in food in the expected quantity. It is good for general well-being.

2. Fish oils/salmon oils: good for dog coat/hair health and shine. Also good for skin allergies and joint health.

3. Glucosamine: improves joint mobility, relieves joint pain and helps with arthritis.

4. Probiotics: good for digestive health and immunity.

Before you give your dog any supplement, talk with your Vet to recommend what is approximate for your dog.

All the best with your dog.

BACK TO WEIGHT MANAGEMENT
8 Ways to Help Your Overweight dog

diet
Most of the time, it’s a joy to share things with our dogs — a love for hiking, walks on the beach, or quality snuggle time on the couch. Unfortunately, we share bad habits, too. It turns out our dogs are just as prone to one of our most common health problems: obesity.

A few extra pounds on your pup can have serious health implications, putting your dog at risk of experiencing a wide range of diseases and conditions, including a reduced life expectancy. Added weight can also impact your dog’s quality of life by affecting his mobility, energy for play, and overall mood.

“As in humans, we now recognize obesity as the most important medical disease that affects our companion animals,” says Dr. Alex German of the University of Liverpool/Royal Canin Weight Management Clinic.

Talk to your veterinarian for information and guidance when it comes to your dog’s diet and potential weight-loss plan. In the meantime, here are eight ways you can start to help your overweight dog.

Know Your Dog’s Healthy Weight
Different breeds and ages have different healthy weight ranges.

Check what the AKC Breed Standard says about the ideal weight for your breed. If your dog is beyond that range, consult your vet. It’s best to get a professional’s help as you assess your pet’s accurate weight, body condition, and diet, determine if the dog would benefit from a weight-loss plan and set a target weight to work toward.

Note that some dogs may be shorter or taller than their breed standard requirements, so the ideal weight would be within those dogs’ breed standard height descriptions.

Keep Your Dog Active
Just like humans, exercise is crucial when it comes to helping your overweight dog get healthy. Increasing your dog’s activity helps burn off energy (and calories consumed). Don’t panic! Exercising your pet doesn’t have to mean running marathons or going for long hikes. Regular walks and the chance to run and play in a safe off-leash environment. Even creating a stimulating indoor environment inside that gets your dog moving more often can help. Remember, different breeds need different amounts of exercise, so consult your vet, breeder, or your dog’s breed standard for guidance on how much activity is recommended.

Distinguish Between Begging and Hunger
Begging is not always about wanting more to eat; it’s often a ploy to get more attention. (And, when it’s rewarded, you reinforce and encourage the behavior to continue.) If your dog begs, don’t assume that he is hungry. Trust your instincts and keep track of when the last mealtime was. If your dog is prone to begging and you’re prone to giving in to those puppy dog eyes, opt for a high-protein diet with a blend of fibers to help manage your dog’s appetite and reduce their voluntary food intake. That way you can feed your dog knowing he will feel fuller and stay satisfied longer.

Limit Treats and Table Scraps
Even when our dogs don’t beg, many of us volunteer too many treats and table scraps. Dogs don’t need to share everything we eat! Think of treats and scraps for your pet as you would candy for children to help you keep them to a minimum. If you use treats for training, look for low-calorie, low-fat options and limit the amount. As an alternative, remember that clickers work great for reinforcement… and they’ve got zero calories! After all, a few extra pounds can make a huge difference for dogs, who are much smaller than we are. (Even those large breeds!) So, concentrate on a healthy diet, and curb the urge to “treat” them with more.

Measure and Monitor
Once your vet has designed a weight-management plan, you should have a clear idea of how much your dog should eat at each meal. Be vigilant; Don’t free-feed or eyeball how much you scoop out — use an appropriate measuring device to ensure you’re managing portion control.

Customize Your Dog’s Diet
Not all weight-loss foods are created equal, so it’s important to match your dog with a nutrition plan that directly addresses their specific needs. Look for a brand that offers food ranges for your dog’s own tendencies, whether it’s weight management, food sensitivities or illnesses.

Don’t Go Cold Turkey
No, this isn’t about feeding your dog leftovers! It’s important to ease your dog into a new diet, rather than abruptly changing what they eat. Always consult with your vet before starting your dog on a new regimen. A good guideline is to plan for at least a seven-day transition when starting a new type of food. Here’s what that could look like:

On Days 1–2, feed your dog 75 percent of their old food and 25 percent of the new food
On Days 3–4, increase the percentage of new food to 50 percent, with the other 50 percent being the old food
On Days 5–6, feed your dog 75 percent of the new food, and 25 percent of the old food
By Day 7, you should be up to 100 percent of the new food
Stick With It
Like human like pet! Studies have shown that after successfully losing weight, approximately half of all dogs regained weight. The good news is that researchers also found that rebound weight gain was significantly reduced by keeping dogs on a weight-loss diet, even after achieving their target weight. So, now that you’ve done the hard work and transitioned to a new formula that’s working, stick with it! As with so many things in our dogs’ worlds, consistency is the key.

BACK TO NATURAL & WHOLE FOODS
Can Dogs Eat Honey?
Simple and sweet, honey contains natural sugars that is reported to have a wide variety of medicinal properties for humans. It also, occasionally, finds its way into the mouths of our dogs. But is honey is safe for dogs and does it have health benefits for canines?

Is Honey Safe for Dogs?
Honey is safe for dogs to eat in small quantities. It contains natural sugars and small amounts of vitamins and minerals. It is also used as a sweetener in many foods and beverages.

That sweetness comes at a price, however. The high sugar content of honey can lead to obesity in dogs if owners feed them too much honey and do not provide adequate exercise and balanced nutrition. Sugars can also cause tooth decay, so it might be a good idea to brush your dog’s teeth if you do feed them honey.

Raw honey should not be fed to puppies or dogs with compromised immune systems, as it may contain the presence of botulism spores. Honey should not be given to diabetic or obese dogs.

Are There Benefits to Feeding Dogs Honey?
For people and dogs, honey is purported to have antimicrobial and antifungal properties, reduce inflammation, sooth stomach ulcers and sore throats, and cure allergies. However, there have not been many conclusive scientific studies validating these claims. Many of these allegations are anecdotal.

One of the most common claims made about honey is that it can cure seasonal allergies. While the scientific evidence is lacking, there is some reason to believe that raw honey could help reduce allergic reactions to flower pollen—assuming, of course, that your dog is allergic to one of the pollens in the honey and not another environmental allergen. Regardless of the lack of conclusive research, feeding your dog a small amount of honey likely won’t harm them, even if it is not guaranteed or even likely to help with allergies.

Humans also use honey to soothe raw throats and stomachs. If your dog has a sore throat, and you have already seen your veterinarian to determine the cause and followed treatment instructions, then feeding a little honey could help soothe any lingering inflammation. At the very least, it will give your dog a tasty distraction.

How Much Honey Can You Feed Your Dog?
If you want to feed your dog honey, talk to your veterinarian about how much is okay to feed your dog. In general, less is usually more when it comes to dog treats, especially for smaller breeds. If your dog has a health condition, such as diabetes, talk to your veterinarian about whether or not honey is safe to feed your dog, and consider offering a treat lower in sugar, like cucumbers, instead. Explore common fruits and vegetables that dogs can and can’t eat.

The Chow Chow is a spitz-type of dog breed originally from northern China.[3] The Chow Chow is a sturdily built dog, square in profile, with a broad skull and small, triangular, erect ears with rounded tips. The breed is known for a very dense double coat that is either smooth or rough.[1]: 4–5 The fur is particularly thick in the neck area, giving it a distinctive ruff or mane appearance. The coat may be shaded/self-red, black, blue, cinnamon/fawn, or cream.[1]: 4–5 [4]

If you have lost a dog before, I am sure you will be shocked at the tears or emotional breakdown you felt especially if you have a strong emotional bond or your dog is considered to be a part of your family.

I have seen children, mummies and daddies cry over their dog or children's dog.

It is expected that your dog lives to his full lifespan of 10-15 years but this may not always be the case due to diseases, accidents etc.

How you handle this loss is very important for your emotional health or will determine whether you are in a good state of mind to get another dog.

It is important to remember that everyone grieves differently, and there is no right or wrong way to cope with the loss of a pet. Crying and feeling deep sadness are natural and normal reactions to the loss of a beloved companion and it's important to allow yourself time to process your emotions.

Some people find comfort in talking to friends or family especially those that know the dog
If you keep a journal, writing can help you relieve your sadness
Seeking support from dog owners community or professional counselors or pet loss support group.
Others may find solace in memorializing their pet through a photo album or a special keepsake.

Most importantly enjoy your time with your dogs as much as possible because their lifespan is short.

Have you ever lost a dog, how did you handle it? Did you cry or were you sad for days?

When Can You Start Training Your Puppy?
Training a puppy starts as soon as you bring them home, which is typically about 8 weeks of age. At this young age, they can learn basic puppy training cues such as sit, stay, and come.
Tips for Training Your Puppy
Here are some basic puppy training tips to get you started.

Use Positive Reinforcement
There are many different methods of training your puppy that you might have heard about or even seen in person with a dog trainer. However, there is only one acceptable and scientifically backed method of training, and that’s the use of positive reinforcement.

Positive reinforcement is the process of giving a reward to encourage a behavior you want. The use of punishment—including harsh corrections; correcting devices such as shock, choke, and prong collars; and dominance-based handling techniques—should be avoided, because these can produce long-term consequences that result in various forms of fear and anxiety for your dog as an adult dog.

To apply this, first find out which rewards work best for your puppy. Some puppies might find something as simple as a piece of their normal kibble exciting enough to train with, while others might need something tastier, like a special training treat.

Then there are the puppies that are not motivated by food at all! For those puppies, try to find a toy they enjoy that they can get when they do a good job. Praise is also a way to positively reinforce a puppy. Petting or showing excitement and saying, “good job!” may be all you need for basic puppy training.

Leash Training
You can start leash training indoors at this age. Because puppies don’t have their full vaccinations at this point, it is unsafe for them to be walking around where other dogs walk.

Start by letting them wear the collar/harness for short amounts of time while providing treats. Increase this duration slowly. Once your puppy knows how to come to you, you can walk around inside on the leash with no distractions. You can move the training outside once your puppy has all their vaccinations.

General Handling
Get your puppy used to being touched. Gently rub their ears and paws while rewarding them. This will get them used to having those areas touched and will make veterinary visits and nail trims less stressful when they are older!

8-10 Weeks Old
Crate Training
Your puppy should see their crate as a safe and calm place. Start by bringing them to their crate for 10- minute intervals while they are nice and calm. Reward them for going in their crate. You can even feed them in their crate to create a positive environment.

10-12 Weeks Old
Learning Not to Bite
Puppies become mouthy at this age. Putting things in their mouths is how they explore their world, but it is important to teach them not to bite your hands or ankles. When they start biting at you, redirect them to a more appropriate object to bite, such as a toy.

12-16 Weeks Old
Potty Training
Maintaining a schedule is important for potty training. Make sure to take your puppy out first thing in the morning, after eating, and after playtime and naps throughout the day. At this point they should start having enough bladder control to learn to hold it. Reward your puppy with a treat every time they go to the bathroom outside.

6 Months Old
Puppies are entering the adolescence stage by this point, and it is the most difficult stage to start training at. That is why it is important to start training them as young as possible! At this stage you will continue training to solidify and strengthen their skills in more public and distracting settings such as dog parks.

Your dog needs you in so many ways. One of the things he needs for general well-being is exercise.

It is also amazing to know exercise is one of the benefits you are also meant to get from your dog.

As you take time to walk, run or throw balls at your dog, you are also exercising your muscles and heart.

So, when last did you exercise your dog?

However, some dog owners are not so confident to take their dogs for a walk because the dog is not thriving well and not looking their best.

If your dog is not thriving well or is poor looking, I will recommend this video for you '4 Critical Points to Have a Healthy Dog'. It will guide you to all you need to make your dog thrive well and look beautiful.

How do you control ticks in your dogs?
Ticks are a menace to dogs. If your dogs have ticks, they will not only feed on the blood of your dogs but also transfer some diseases.

Most dogs have few ticks on their body and some have hundreds to thousands on their body which can be quite irritating to look at.

However, a single tick on your dog's body can transfer diseases to your dog and it is your responsibility to control and eradicate this menace.

What measures have you put in place to eradicate ticks?

If you have put in some effort to control ticks but yet they keep seeing it on their dogs, I have a proven procedure to help you eradicate them totally.

Yes, It is possible for your dog to collapse during exercise. This can happen due to overexertion during exercise or if your dog has a medical condition.

Some common causes of collapse in dogs during exercise include heat stroke, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), and heart issues.

Whenever you are exercising your dog, it is important to monitor your dog's activity levels and be aware of the signs of exhaustion, such as heavy panting, slow response to commands, and loss of coordination.

1. Do not exercise your dog in the afternoon. Early mornings and late evenings are better.
2. Do not overexert your dog, stop before your dog is exhausted or tired.
3. Do not exercise a sick or recovering dog (except for professional physiotherapy.
4. Always have a bowl or bottle of water available during exercise.

If your dog collapses during exercise, it is important to seek immediate veterinary attention.

For some of you who wishes to purchase a dog, please understand this, there’s not fixed price to any dog breeds, they’re sold according to its DNA percentage.
A pure breed doesn’t mean the dog has a 100% DNA of that breed, only a pedigree does.
So when you want to buy a dog, don’t shout about the price or say my friend or I got this breed for this or that, that’s why 2 friends can buy same breed and in 8 months, the difference becomes as vivid as the sun on a sunny day, if you want quality, be ready to break the bank, don’t expect your puppy you bought for 50k to turn out same way as the puppy another bought for 120k, except them scam am.
You can’t want a good pup and expect it to be cheap, dogs are not cheap, from the buying to the welfare, know this and know peace.

High temperatures can be dangerous for dogs and can lead to heat stroke, which can be fatal if not treated promptly.

Circumstances that can lead to heat stroke are:

1. Leaving your dog outside to dry after bathing when the weather is hot.

2. Tying to leash your dog outside under the sun.
3. Exercising them during the hottest parts of the day
4. Leaving your dog in the car without A/C during hot weather.
5. Putting your dog at the back of a pickup when traveling.

It is important to provide plenty of water and shade for dogs during hot weather.
It is also important to monitor your dogs for signs of heat stroke, such as excessive panting, drooling of saliva, reddened gums, vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of coordination, and collapse.

Watch out for the next post on what to do when you notice signs of heat stroke in your dog.

It is important to take precautions when taking puppies to the veterinary hospital. They are more susceptible to stress and infection, and the veterinary hospital is one of the places your puppies can easily pick up infection. This is because your puppies can come in contact with sick dogs or infected discharges in the hospital.

When taking your puppies to the hospital:

Transport safely: Use a puppy carrier or basket to keep your puppy safe during transport. Do not let your unvaccinated puppies walk or roam in the Vet. Hospital. Puppies are curious and want to get familiar with their environment. Through this, can sniff or lick up microorganisms.

Other dogs: Your puppies will see other dogs in the hospital and will want to play with them. This playful interaction can be the point where your puppy will get infected. Limit all interaction with other dogs.

Keep them calm: Try to keep your puppy as calm as possible before and during the visit. This will make examination, vaccination or treatment as brief as possible. This can be done by providing a familiar blanket or toy, or by playing soothing music.

Also, discuss with the vet: Before the visit, discuss any concerns or specific needs of your puppy with the veterinarian. This will help the vet provide the best possible care for your pet when you get to the hospital.

Heat stroke is one of the causes of death in dogs that can leave a dog owner dazed and confused. A few minutes ago, the dog was active and the next, the dog was gone.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency because it is life-threatening. These are the signs you will notice if your dog is dealing with heat stroke; excessive panting, drooling of saliva, reddened gums, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of coordination, and collapse.

If you notice these signs:

1. Move your dog to a cool, shaded area, or indoors if possible.

2. Pour cool water on your dog (not cold) or choose your dog with cool water (make sure you allow the hot water in the house to flow out first)

3. Place cool, wet towels on your dog.

4. If possible, give your dog small amounts of cool water to drink.

5. Call or take your dog to your Veterinary Doctor immediately.

Yes. All dogs can experience heat stroke when exposed to heat for an extended period. However, dogs with short snouts, like bulldogs, pugs, Boston terriers, bullmastiffs, and Lhasa Apso are more susceptible to heat stroke.

Since all dogs can come down with heat stroke, do not leave your dog under the sun or hot environment for any reason.

Children bond easily and love to play with dogs, especially puppies. They are also very observant about things that happen to the dog.

One important aspect, I would like to point out is that most times they give the needed information or history of sickness or injury that the Veterinary Doctor needs.

Many times, you may be busy with work and all and may not notice when symptoms of diseases start or when an injury occurs. If you have a dog handler, he may not notify you early about the changes or symptoms he observes.

This is where your children come in. Let's look at this conversation.

Vet. Dr.: "When did you notice that your dog stopped eating"?

Dad:"yesterday".

Son: No daddy, it was 3 days. Can't you remember, that day that Uncle Tobi came.

These are some of the scenarios that are witnessed in Vet. hospitals. We understand that you are busy and get home tired.
Taking your children along to the Vet. Hospitals can go a long way to help give appropriate information needed for treatment and management.
