THE HIND LIMB OF THE GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG

A 'compass and protractor' skeletal overlay showing the SV/FCI/VDH breed standards description of the hind limbs in the German Shepherd Dog.

The breed standard provides three hindquarter hallmarks.

1 - The position of the hind limbs is slightly backwards
2 - The femur and tibia are approximately the same length
3 - The femur and tibia form an angle of approximately 120° internally and therefore 240° externally.

Items 2 and 3 are quantitative - objective statements.

Item 1 is subjective, open to interpretation, but when applying a modicum of common sense, it is saying - when the rear pastern/hock is placed in a vertical position, it is slightly behind the end of the dogs tail root/pelvis - not in a vertical line (under angulation) with it nor too far behind it (overangulation). The dictionary definition of slightly is 'to a small degree or extent'.

The key point here is that when the tibia is lengthened beyond what you see here, the breed standards requirement for the tibia and femur to be of about the same length and the position of the hind limbs to be 'slightly backwards' is compromised and the 240° angle is exceeded - hence the word 'overangulation'. The more the increase in the angle's degree, the more the degree of overangulation!

It should come as no surprise, that the breed standards description - seen here on a breed standard compliant dog, has the 'potential' to deliver optimum drive, hindquarter limb and joint stability and an expansive ground-covering hindquarter stride over a very long distance.

Just one aspect of 'potential' is this.

Balance of the fore and hind limbs is essential to balanced and efficient movement at the trot. The breed standard was written with this very much fore of mind. To that end, the breed standards 'hallmarks' for the forehand are based on balancing with those of the hind-hand. If the hind limbs are not as described, they will be out of balance with a perfectly constructed forehand. Understanding this is critical to appreciating the point of the post - adhering to the breed standards blueprint.

Up

WHY DOGS LIVE LESS THAN HUMAN

”People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life — like loving everybody all the time and being nice, Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay for as long as we do.”

Live simply.
Love generously.
Care deeply.
Speak kindly.

Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:

• When your loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
• Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.
• Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure Ecstasy.
• Take naps.
• Stretch before rising.
• Run, romp, and play daily.
• Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
• Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
• On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.
• On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.
• When you’re happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
• Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
• Be faithful.
• Never pretend to be something you’re not.
• If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
• When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.

That's the secret of happiness that we can learn from a good dog.😁

If left untreated, worms can damage your dog's internal organs and lead to loss of consciousness and death. If you suspect that your dog has worms, take him/her to your nearest veterinary office. Most intestinal worms are easy to treat and your veterinarian will prescribe a medication based on the diagnosis.

EAR CARRIAGE OF THE GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG

"A beautiful set of ears is undeniably critical
to a German Shepherd Dog’s expression. They should be fully erect, parallel or nearly so, medium sized, symmetrical and open to the front. They should not lean inwards across the skull, or flap noticeably when the dog is gaiting. Erect ears allow air circulation to the ear canal and act as ear trumpets, directing sound waves into the inner ear. While it is natural for ears to occasionally be folded back when relaxed, this should not be the dog’s typical carriage as this can indicate submissiveness or weakness of character. When out in public a confident dog’s ears are usually held erect. .. Good ears should be bred, not taped,
or glued and certainly not created surgically.

The GSD puppy is born with dropped ears that gradually come erect with maturity. Some puppies may show fully erect ears at only a few weeks of age, while others may not come up until the dog is nearly a year old. During teething it is common for standing ears to collapse, only to
rise again when the stress of teething has passed."
