There is NO SUCH thing as a Merle Cavalier!
The Merle coat pattern gene is NOT present in the Cavalier. It has never been, and it cannot 'spontaneously occur'.
It results from unscrupulous, profit-breeders outcrossing Cavaliers to other breeds that do have the Merle gene. These are crossbreeds or mutts!
To make matters worse, these crossbred Cavaliers are now being marketed as 'rare' and commanding huge sums of money. Thousands more than a well-bred, health-tested traditional-colored puppy from a reputable breeder.
If it were merely about color, that would be one thing, but it’s not. These dogs are having serious health issues, starting with blindness, bilateral hearing loss, and other issues due to the Merle recessive genes. Not to mention all the other health issues of the Cavalier they are not being screened for.
These breeders are not health testing. Their goal is producing 'rare' colors like Lilac Tri Colors… to command ridiculously high prices from unsuspecting buyers. They slap a guarantee on the purchase papers and falsified registrations and double the prices.
The last photos on here are Cavaliers that were put up for auction that commercial breeders attend. Cavaliers with Merle coat patterns are now making headway, and I suspect in the coming years we will see a tremendous rise in them being offered.
Profit-breeders are looking to produce the most Merles they can. Of all coat patterns, this is one of the trickiest to breed. See the chart. When one breeds two Merles together, they may produce more Merles, but some are 'double Merle' and have major health defects, including being blind or deaf or both.
What some Cavalier advocates have done to combat this craze: Many FB breed groups have not allowed Merles to be pictured in posts. Theoretically, they are not purebred Cavaliers, regardless of what any paperwork says.
Many advocates are giving warnings to unsuspecting buyers. Stopping this craze is going to take educating the public and reducing the demand.
The Cavalier is the first breed to ever have a ban on it for health issues.
PLEASE pass this forward to educate people that a Merle Cavalier is from crossbreeding to another breed that has Merle coat pattern and can come with major health defects far above those of a Cavalier.
Find a reputable breeder that is health testing the parents and will be there for the rest of your puppy's life!
Be an advocate for Cavaliers.
