VACCINES AND VACCINATION OF DOGS
A vaccine is a substance that stimulates the immune system to produce protection against a specific disease. Vaccines contain antigens, which mimic disease-causing organisms in dog's immune system but don't actually cause disease. The act of introducing a vaccine into the body to produce immunity to a specific diesease is called vaccination.
There are two core vaccines important for your dog. They are:
1. DHPP/DHLPP: This polyvalent vaccine protects your pet from Canine distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parainfluenza and parvovirus. These diesease may be potentially fatal to dogs if not protected against. (We shall be talking exclusively on each of these diseases in our subsequent posts. Kindly follow this page).
DHLPP vaccination should be done when your pet is 6-8 weeks old, boosted twice at 3 weeks interval (depending on the vaccine manufacturer's instructions), and again a year later.
DO NOT VACCINATE YOUR DOG YOURSELF. TAKE HER TO A VET!

2. Rabies vaccine: Rabies is a deadly virus that is spread through saliva of infected animals. It is highly fatal and can cause death within few days.
What are the signs of rabies infection? Follow this page and find out in our subsequent posts.
First rabies vaccination should be done at above 3 months old and repeated yearly.

Special precautions for vaccination in animals
• Only clinically healthy animals should be vaccinated.
• Animals with parasitic diseases, infections, nutritional and metabolic disorders can cause side effects or insufficient immune response following vaccination.
• Again, do not vaccinate your dogs yourself to prevent potential hazards. Contact your veterinarian!

Failure to vaccinate your dog will leave her exposed to a variety of potentially deadly diseases. Vaccinate your dog today and protect yourself and your pet.

CARING FOR ORPHANED PUPPIES!! 🐶
Raising orphaned puppies requires your dedication, time and resources but it is highly rewarding. Close observation and prompt attention cannot be over emphasised. It is also important to keep your veterinarian informed of the pups' wellbeing.

Feeding
Orphaned pups and non lactating bi***es can require you to manually feed.
Dam’s milk provides everything the pups need during their first four weeks of life. Therefore, you should note the following when improvising;
• Cow's milk is not suitable as it can result in diarrhoea and subsequently dehydration of the puppies.
•Use specially formulated food for puppies. Bottle or syringe feeding can be helpful in this case.
•Food high in protein content is most preferred as it improves growth and aid tissue building.
•The general rule is to feed the puppies every 2 to 3 hours. Hand feeding can start to be phased out from the 3rd and 4th week as moistened solid food is introduced.
•It is important you warm the milk formula to around 35-37°C as this will aid digestion.
•Animals can transit to eating solid food at about 2-3 weeks of age. Dry kibbles can be introduced at 7 to 8 weeks of age.

Weight
Weighing the puppies daily to check for weight gain can reassure you that they are doing well. Weight may double or even triple during the first weeks of life. Gaining 10 to 15% of birth weight daily is considered healthy. If a puppy is failing to gain weight or losing weight, you should consult with your veterinarian

Warmth
Puppies in the first four weeks of life have reduced abilities to regulate their own temperature and therefore must be kept warm during this period.

Handling
•Over handling of puppies should be avoided in their first two weeks of life.
•Gentle handling a few times a day can be introduced at three weeks.
•As this is an important time for vision and hearing development, puppies should be allowed to socialise at 3 weeks and above.

Stimulation for elimination
For the first 2 to 3 weeks of their lives, puppies will need help to urinate and defaecate. Normally the mother does this by licking their ge***al region. To simulate this action, after every feed rub a cotton wool ball or tissue moistened with warm water over the ge***als and a**s of the puppies. If this procedure is not followed, the puppy may become constipated. Pups assume this functions on their own at about three to four weeks of age.

Checkups
•Deworming can start at an early age
•Standard vaccinations can start at above 6 weeks of age.
•Constantly check for signs of illness in your pups and notify you veterinarian if you notice any.

Although raising an orphaned pup requires a lot of dedication, raising an healthy pup is highly rewarding.
