A new study shows vaccinating rural chickens against Newcastle disease can improve diets and increase growth in boys and girls.
Reducing flock losses provided households with more protein and micronutrient-rich foods for children. The research is especially critical since child stunting due to poor nutrition is common in rural Kenya and other lower-income countries.
“We had noticed families who fed their children high-protein foods had better outcomes in terms of preventing stunted growth in children, and we wanted to look for ways to improve growth given the resources they already had,” said lead researcher Dr. Elkanah Otiang, Kenyan Medical Research Institute.
