A WISE MAN ONCE SAID:

I keep seeing a lot of questions regarding putting weight on pups and young dogs. STOP and understand that genetics are the most important thing you can feed your dog. The genetic information received from mom, dad and lineage is 90% of what your dog will become or look like.
Until 18-24 months the dog/pup should be kept lean, especially due to there shouldn't be too much exercise in order to protect bone and joint structure (about 5 minutes per month old). It puzzles me that there are more questions about weight gain than proper exercise.
Let's face it, due to greed and marketing many breeders will fatten up pups as much as possible to make "cute" puppy pics and due to ignorance and emotion many consumers think it's "cute", become breeders and duplicate the same actions.
All breeds are different and the more you know a breed the more you know all dogs within a breed are different, especially in the bull bred breeds.
When it comes to feeding, follow the directions on the bag then adjust from there based on what you see with your specific dog.
At 2-6 months the dog should eat 3 times per day.
At 6-12 months the dog should eat twice per day.
At 12 months the dog should only eat once per day. They are predators and function at their best mentally, emotionally and physically when they're a little hungry.
At 12 months old you can begin exercising (panting) the dog a little more and at 18-24 months you can go all out with conditioning (clear drool). This is when you experiment with weight gain but only when a dog is being exercised or conditioned regularly. If you are not the type to regularly and consistently exercise your dog then quit worrying about weight gain.
