I came across this question online and here's my answer to it.

Question: How long do snails hibernate? What makes them sleep?

Though I have written about snail aestivation before, let me briefly write on it again.

Snails hibernate when the environmental conditions become unfavorable, such as low temperatures, food scarcity, or moisture preservation. Hibernation (also known as aestivation) is a survival mechanism that allows snails to conserve energy and withstand the harsh weather. Snails can hibernate for short or long periods, depending on the species and the specific conditions.

During hibernation, snails retreat into their shells and seal the entrance with a thick mucus layer called an epiphragm. This layer protects them from the cold, predators, and water loss. Snails also reduce their metabolic rate, heart rate, and breathing rate, and use their stored reserves to survive.

The length of snail hibernation can vary, but some snails can hibernate for up to six months. However, this may depend on the temperature, humidity, and availability of food sources. Snails will resume their normal activity when the conditions improve and the epiphragm dissolves.

The dry season is a challenging time for snail farmers in Nigeria. It is wise to plan ahead and avoid unnecessary stress during this period.

The picture below shows the risk of high mortality among snails due to direct sunlights.

To prevent this, you should maintain a constant temperature of 22° to 25°C in your snail farm or pen. If you can lower the temperature to 20°C, you will have a great advantage.

You should also protect your snail farm from strong winds and plant more trees around it. Trees provide shade, moisture and food for snails.

Planting trees is not only good for your snails, but also for the environment. 🌳🌳🌳

Hello guys! It's been a while!

I want to share with you some tips on how to keep your snails healthy and happy. As you may have known, and unlike other livestock, snails do not have any medication or injection available for them. This makes them vulnerable to diseases and pests. Sometimes, we lose some of our snails without knowing the cause or the cure. That is why we need to have access to a lot of medicinal plants. One of the benefits of the free range system is that it provides a natural source of these plants.

When leaves fall from their trees, they may contain a lot of phytochemicals that can potentially boost snail health. Phytochemicals are substances produced by plants that have biological activity and pharmacological effects. They can help to improve the immunity, growth, and reproduction of our snails. However, not all fallen leaves are the same. The type and amount of phytochemicals may vary depending on the plant species, environmental factors, and the stage of decomposition. Therefore, the benefits of fallen leaves for snails may not be consistent or reliable. We need to do more research to confirm the efficacy and safety of using fallen leaves as a natural remedy for snail diseases.

Some of the best medicinal plants for snails are dried, brown leaves of:

- Pawpaw
- Almond
- Kolanut
- Cocoa
- Plantain

I use these leaves to treat and prevent snail illnesses. They work well for me and my snails. You can try them too and see if they make a difference. But remember, always observe your snails closely and monitor their health for any signs of disease or distress.

Also, do not rely solely on fallen leaves or other natural remedies. They are not a substitute for proper care and management of your snails.

This season is crucial for your snail farm’s health and productivity, so you need to adjust your watering practices accordingly.
You should water your snailery more often than usual, but not too much that it causes waterlogging in the pens.

A waterlogged pen can create unfavorable conditions for the snails, such as fungal infections, suffocation, and drowning, and it can be more detrimental than a dry pen.

Therefore, you should be careful to maintain the right balance of moisture and drainage in your snailery.

You may wonder if you need to use soil in your snail pen or not. The answer is: it depends on your preference and resources. There are advantages and disadvantages of both options. Let's take a look at them:

- **𝑼𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒔𝒐𝒊𝒍 𝒊𝒏 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒔𝒏𝒂𝒊𝒍 𝒑𝒆𝒏**
This is the most natural and traditional way of snail farming. It provides your snails with a familiar and comfortable environment, where they can burrow, lay eggs, and get nutrients from the soil.

It also helps to regulate the temperature and humidity of the pen. However, using soil in your snail pen also has some drawbacks. You need to find a suitable type of soil, such as loamy soil, that is rich in organic matter and has good drainage.

You also need to protect your snails from soil-borne diseases, parasites, and predators, such as termites, ants, lizards, and snakes. You need to clean and replace the soil regularly to prevent contamination and odor.

- **𝑵𝒐𝒕 𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒔𝒐𝒊𝒍 𝒊𝒏 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒔𝒏𝒂𝒊𝒍 𝒑𝒆𝒏**
This is a more modern and convenient way of snail farming. It eliminates the need to scout for and transport soil, and reduces the risk of soil-borne problems.

As you can see, there is no definitive answer to whether you should use soil in your snail pen or not. You need to weigh the pros and cons of each option and decide what works best for you and your snails.

Snail farming can be challenging in the dry season, especially when the Harmattan brings dry air, dust, and temperature changes. These conditions can make snails go into aestivation and reduce their productivity. To keep your snails healthy and active during this period, you need to follow these steps:

- **𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒕𝒆𝒄𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒔𝒏𝒂𝒊𝒍𝒔 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒅𝒂𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒑𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒔**: The dry season comes with new kind of predators and pests which are attracted to your farm due to how cool it it's, these pests will be looking to stay away from the harsh heat and your farm is a convenient place for them. Make sure your snail pen is well secured and covered with a net or wire mesh, block all holes and cracks.

- **𝑲𝒆𝒆𝒑 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒐𝒊𝒍 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒎𝒐𝒊𝒔𝒕**: Water the soil and housing regularly to prevent them from drying out. You can also use a sprinkler or drip irrigation system to maintain the moisture level.

You can also provide your snail with a substrate/mulching that is moist, soft, and deep enough for burrowing, and some hiding places, such as plants, rocks, or shells.

Snails need a balanced diet that includes calcium, protein, fiber, carbs, vitamins and minerals. You can feed your snail a variety of foods, such as vegetables, fruits, grains, eggs, and compound snail mix. You can also offer your snail some treats, such as cuttlebone, fish flakes, or algae wafers. However, you should avoid overfeeding or underfeeding your snail, as this can cause stress and health problems. You can feed your snail once or twice a day (morning and evening), and remove any uneaten food after a few hours.

Snails are amazing creatures that have beautiful and diverse shells. However, sometimes their shells can lose their color and become white. This can indicate a problem with their health or environment. In this post, I will share some of the common causes and solutions for snail shell discoloration.

One of the main reasons why snails' shells can become white is health deterioration. Snails that are stressed, sick, or malnourished may not produce enough pigment or calcium to maintain their shell color and strength. This can also affect their appetite, activity, and growth. To prevent this, you should feed your snails a balanced and varied diet that includes calcium-rich foods, such as cuttlebone, eggshells, spinach, kale, or snail-specific foods (compound feed). You should also keep your snails in a clean, spacious, and stable environment that suits their needs.

Another reason why snails' shells can become white is sunlight exposure. Snails need a moderate and humid climate to thrive. Extreme temperatures, droughts, floods, and storms can adversely affect their snail farm. Sunlight can also affect the absorption of vitamin D3, which is essential for shell health. However, too much sunlight or UV light can also fade the shell color. To prevent this, you should find the optimal amount of sunlight for your snails, depending on their species and preferences. Some snails may need more sunlight than others, but none of them should be exposed to direct or intense sunlight for long periods.

A third reason why snails' shells can become white is water conditions. Snails don't need water that is too acidic, too soft, or too high in copper or chlorine as they may suffer from shell erosion and whitening. Acidic water can dissolve the calcium carbonate in the shell, soft water can lack the minerals needed for shell formation, and copper can be toxic to snails. To prevent this, you should use a water test kit to measure the pH, hardness, and copper levels of your water. Ideally, the water should have a pH of around 7, a hardness of around 100 ppm, and a copper level of less than 0.05 ppm. You can use buffers, conditioners, or filters to adjust these parameters if needed. You can also add crushed coral, limestone, or aragonite to the substrate to increase the calcium and pH of the water. It is best you use untreated, natural water.

Also, inadequate mulching materials and/or lack of moisture can contribute to snails’ shell whitening. Mulching can help improve soil health and moisture retention, as well as regulate temperature. Therefore, it is important to choose the right mulch for snail farming, and to keep it moist and clean.

Stocking density can cause snails’ shells to turn white because of shell rasping: When snails are overcrowded, they may rasp or scrape each other’s shells, causing damage and erosion. This can expose the inner layer of the shell, which is usually white or pale in color. To prevent or remedy this, snail farmers should choose the optimal stocking density for their snails, depending on their species, size, and habitat.
