Is Fish Farming Worth It?
People often allude to the over-hyped profitability of the fish farming business. Well, I agree that indeed the Fish Farming business is profitable, and as well as, a big time employer of labor. It's also very challenging and requires a great deal of effort, perseverance, technical and entrepreneurial know-how, and considerable amounts of money.
Consequent upon the 2016 economic recession, a great many people crashed into the fish farming business as an alternative to break free from the strangulations of the economy. Thousands of fish farms, small and big, sprang up overnight in every corner of Bayelsa state, creating an artificial boom in the sector. Agro-companies and Farming clusters came up in their numbers. Seminars and workshops were organized for farmers by government and other concerned organizations. Loans were sought here and there, and our own agricultural revolution was expected.
In spite of all these activities, one after another the fish farms began to shutdown instead, including government-owned fish farms. And within two years interval, only a small number of struggling fish farms were still operational, barely managing to break-even. Now, the big question is WHY? The answer is simple. People underestimated or were misinformed of the labour, perseverance, technical know-how, and financial investment required to succeed in the sector. In short, people crashed into the sector basically as farmers and not as entrepreneurs; therefore, when confronted with the administrative and market realities of the sector, they were left with only one choice; QUIT!
Speaking from experience, to succeed in the fish farming business, one must be an entrepreneur as well. Believe me, as a start-up fish farmer, you'll need a lot of help. If possible, get a good mentor. You'll also need to do a lot of studies in the sector and muster the courage to persevere against the odds. Getting a fish farming business off the ground usually takes an average of five years. I know it may take less or more to some, it all depends. However, fish farming is like every other business, it takes time to grow.
We have been in the sector since 2017, and after a number of loses, it's only now we are beginning to stabilize, which means we still have a long way to go. One thing about fish farming business is that at the end of the dark tunnel there awaits a sure light, which is why I'd encourage you to get into the fish farming business.
WE BELIEVE THAT TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE FISH FARMING A WORTHY INDUSTRY IN BAYELSA STATE!
