Heat stroke in dogs is a life-threatening condition that can lead to death.

It is a medical emergency that can be prevented. It occurs mostly in the hot regions and in summer in temperate region.

It occurs when dogs get too hot and are unable to reduce their body temperature through panting.


This condition is mostly caused by oversight of dog owners.

The likely scenarios in which heat stroke occurs are:

1. Leaving your dog in the car on a warm/hot day without air conditioner on or with the windows up.

2.Travelling with your dog at the back of pickup truck on a hot or warm day

3. Leaving your dog outdoor without cool water.

4. Exposing your dogs to direct sunlight for too long.

5. Walking with your dog in the afternoon on a warm/hot day


During heat stroke, you will notice excessive panting, disorientation or uncoordinated movement, drooling, bright red gums, vomiting, diarrhea, collapse.


When you notice the signs above,

1. Remove your dog from the car or direct sun.

2. Place in a shaded area.

3. Give cool water to drink.

4. Place wet towel on your dog or pour cool water (not cold) on your dog.

5. If you have a hose, ensure you allow the hot water in it to flow out before hosing your dog.

6. Then, take your dog to your Vet for proper management.
