How people parent can significantly influence a child’s development; the same is true with dogs. Dog parenting styles run the gamut from permissive to authoritarian, not all of which produce positive results.

According to a new study, dogs respond best to authortative dog parenting, rather than authoritarian or passive pet parenting styles.

Our canine companions are created to vomit, most likely because many of them will consume practically everything they come across. When dogs vomit, they can effectively "alter their minds" about eating something potentially deadly.

Did you know that regurgitation is different from vomiting? Dr. Jennifer Coates explains why this is important to know and what to do when your dog regurgitates.

Can dogs have asthma? While asthma in dogs is considerably less prevalent than in cats, dogs can suffer from it in the same manner that humans do.

Asthma in dogs is an allergic condition. An allergic reaction induces airway inflammation, which causes constriction and spasming of the tiny airways in the lungs, resulting in asthma attacks in dogs.

Asthma in dogs is most commonly encountered in middle-aged dogs and certain young pups. Small dogs are more likely than giant dogs to suffer asthma.

Can dogs have asthma? Find out the signs and symptoms of asthma in dogs and how you can help a dog with asthma.

It's a double adoption story! Milo AND Lucky got, well, lucky! They're ADOPTED!!

Milo was featured on SSD earlier this month. And when his adopter Jennifer showed up to meet him and bring him home, she also fell in love with senior boy Lucky! These two gents moved to Vermont and it's a wonderful life!

Jennifer shares, "The adoption story of Milo (11) and Lucky (9) would need to start with my Romeo. He was the greatest dog. And he died two months ago. I adopted Romeo in 2012. And for the next 10 years he was my guy. I miss him dearly. I will always miss him.

When Milo was profiled on SSD, he kind of reminded me of Romeo. Not going to lie, I was looking for a dog with similar characteristics. So, my husband, Chris, and I sent in our application to PupStarz Rescue.

After a virtual home tour, reference and vet checks, and some logistical planning, last Friday morning at 6AM I boarded a flight to Newark to go meet Milo and hopefully bring him home. After a flight, a car rental, and a half hour drive I arrived at the home of Milo’s amazing foster-mom, Lisa. She is one of those people who dedicates her life to senior animals and ones with special needs. She had let me know that Milo might be standoffish at first. So, I went into her home and plunked myself down on the floor to get to know Milo. She was not wrong. Milo could not have been less interested in me. He is a dog who loves his toys, and they get his undivided attention. Another one of her foster dogs, Lucky, took it upon himself to climb into my lap. Soon, in his non-verbal way he had told me that I was not only going home with Milo, but that Lucky would also be joining our family.

At one point during the visit, Milo did wander over to me and gave me a look as if to say 'ok, I guess you can adopt me.' Long story short, I adopted Milo and Lucky that morning. We packed into the rental car and made the 6-hour drive back to our home in Vermont.

My husband and I spent the next week slowly introducing Milo and Lucky to our two other dogs, Stella, and Grady. And now, exactly seven days later, all the dogs are finally living in the same space. Milo and Lucky seem genuinely happy to be here. They are sweet old men.

Every day I wander out to the garden where we buried Romeo. I have put a bird feeder there and planted some rose bushes. I place a leaf, or a small gourd, or a flower on the stone we put there for him. And then I wander back to the house where the dogs are often playing in the yard, now together. Through love and loss, new things can come into our lives. Milo and Lucky are that for us."

"We have fostered a lot and have had our share of foster fails and I love the seniors and weirdos. About a year ago the director of the rescue I foster for (Companion Pet Rescue & Transport of W. Tn., Inc.) asked me if I wanted to see an email about an old lady beagle someone wanted to surrender and of course I did. I don’t think there is anything in the world better than a little old beagle. A family acquired her from their elderly parents and had been trying to find a rescue to take her because they didn’t have time for her. They mentioned she had 'occasional accidents' in the house, so I assumed she had been urinating all over the place.

After some arranging, Eliza, an 11-year-old beagle, was coming to rescue with CPR, and we were going to foster her. As soon as I saw her I knew she was meant for us. And by us, I mean me, but my partner also absolutely adores her now. She had lots of old lady lumps and was slightly oddly shaped but seeing her for the first time felt like Christmas morning times a hundred. I decided to adopt her immediately. The day after I picked her up I was taking the other love of my life, a very curmudgeonly old diva Pyr named Mae (Mae was also a foster failure and she benefited from a Susie's medical grant to CPR a few years ago) to the vet, so I took Eliza along for an exam. We found she had a severe heart murmur and arthritis that required daily medications, but the most astounding thing to me was that Eliza piled right on Mae and Mae did not seem inclined to s***k her for being so forward. It was like they were old friends.

Eliza is a complete tyrant. At night she barks incessantly because she wants treats, she has the bladder capacity of a squirrel so she has to go potty a lot and if you don’t take her immediately she absolutely will p*e on the floor without a second thought. She will eat anything she finds in the yard but she will not knowingly take medication, so we are constantly coming up with inventive ways to sneak her meds into food items, and she has to be carried up and down the stairs. She snores so loud it is actually ridiculous. I would, of course, not change a single thing about her and every day we have with her is a gift. When we are ready to add to our household again, it will absolutely be a senior dog.
