Happy World Earth Day 2024!

Today, we join hands with millions around the globe to celebrate our beautiful planet and raise awareness about the urgent need to tackle plastic pollution. This year's theme, "Planet vs Plastic," reminds us of the critical role each of us plays in protecting our environment and preserving the Earth for future generations.

Let's pledge to reduce, reuse, and recycle plastic waste, minimize single-use plastics, and advocate for sustainable solutions. Together, we can make a difference and ensure a healthier, cleaner, and more sustainable planet for all.

The Biodiversity Preservation Center in Uyo kicked off 2024 with its inaugural bird-watching event on January 3rd at the University of Uyo Permanent site. This initiative aimed to gather crucial data on local bird populations and their preferred habitats, furthering birding awareness and enhancing local capacity in Akwa-Ibom State. The bird-watching activity was conducted for 2 hours and 6 minutes to capture variations in bird activity. During this activity, a total of 26 bird species were identified, representing a mix of resident birds with the Grey headed kingfisher being the rarest bird found in the area.
The birder of the day was Mrs. Helen Essien, from California, USA. While the most enthusiastic birder of the day was Chief Godwin Akpan aka Son of Man of the defunct Anamco Ltd Emene. Club members had a great time members enjoyed the outing especially as the team were taught Ibibio/ Efik names of the common birds..

BPC Nigeria frowns seriously and condemns this wicked attack on an innocent elephant by a government agent, BPC insist that government must immediately institute widespread conservation education for all the security agencies in Nigeria, wildlife conservation education and BPC is willing to lead such training in conjunction with other well meaning conservation organizations, this should never continue and the perpetrators must be brought to book by immediate effect with immediate effect to serve as a deterrent for others to create the much needed awareness for conservation, elephants are protected by laws both by Nigerian laws and the international conservation conventions that Nigeria is a signatory nation, it's a terrible thing and should never be encouraged.
