In the Netherlands we are facing a so called positive-list for exotic mammals prohibiting the keeping of such species, luckily there is a lot of resistance and quite a few objections and appeals are still to be revisited by the relevant Court.
However in the meantime there is also a threat for a Positive list for reptiles, birds and already mentioned in parliament a list for amphibians, fish and invertebrates…. Also EU-wide positive lists are being considered. There is no proof there is a need for such restrictive legislation nor does it do anything to increase the welfare of the animals already kept but it does alienate people from animals and nature! There are much better alternatives like Husbandry Guidelines but for some reason they are not being considered!
