WONDERFUL NEWS JUST IN
Veronique at THE Hengelo shelter found Franky a new home after his first owner brought him back..covid 🤬 see earlier post about this.
Today is a new beginning for this sweet dog as Franky is about to leave the shelter with his new human dad. ❤

A last look back at Veronique and off he is. Well done team Hengelo and a big hug for Franky. This time a true forever home with loving people.

UPDATe ; We are so happy!!!
Yesterday Bert and Lucifer , two of the last cats that left the old horrorshelter of Azoria in Romania a while ago, found a home. They are now going to live with a very sweet lady. After they get used to their new home they can also stroll outside because she lives in a very quiet neighborhood and her neighbors also enjoy it when the cats come to their garden.
This lady has always picked up her cats from us( the Dutch shelter that lovingly took them in) . Last year the last one died of old age and she just missed having furry friends around. She spoils her cats through and through, so Bert and Lucifer have found a golden basket.

Parting is such sweet sorrow...Dana is saying goodbye to her friends at the Dutch Hengelo shelter. Her new family took her with them today to her forever home.
Some tears were shed as she had become one of the favorites at the shelter but everybody is so happy for this sweet girl that has been through so much horror, pain and hardship in her life.

Thank you team at Dierenopvang Hengelo for being such loving and caring people.

Have a wonderful life sweet girl!! ❤

This look is called - feed me woman! 😂 I think I've never posted an update on Rosa aka Emmy. She's almost 1.5 yrs with us. She's the best girl on the planet. Beginnings were rough and difficult, she was terrified and clearly didn't know much about the world around her. I think she has never lived in the house before. Fast forward to the now and we have a loyal friend, protector (I didn't realize she's an Anatolian Shepherd mix until people who knew better started pointing this out). So her guarding instinct is high. However, she now trusts me 100% and with her trust and gentle guidance she knows when to let it go (i.e we were having a house renovation last year. Many workers coming in and out through the garden. Often Rosa was chilling in the garden when someone unannounced walked in. Her deep bark could wake up the entire neighborhood. Her size and seriousness could scare everyone. As soon as I come over and say "it's ok" she waves her tail and walks away without any further fuss. Next time same person comes in, she's not even bothered to bark. But wait until someone new shows up. Same deep bark with the expression"you shall not pass" on her face. We feel very safe having Rosa around. But most of all we feel very blessed to have her with us, she's the best friend and my favourite family member 😉

Our Raluca Butan is at the shelter where all the Azorians will be tested for diseases so they can be free to travel to their new homes in the EU when they have been found.
All these dogs have known her from the moment they were saved from the Ovidiu kill shelter in 2017.
Look at the trust in his eyes.

ZEUS is doing just great, he is a brave little trooper. Today we went already for 3 walks. Harness on / harness off, he is getting used to the routines and the walking ( sometimes still a little flying) on the leash. The presence of Noortje and Sora is a tremendous help. I sp*eded the walking with him up as he got extremely stressed when we had to leave him behind every time as he was not ready yet, so much to learn and it has not even been more than a little over 2 weeks since he arrived. He definitely does not ever want to be left alone, that is clear. So as of today he walks with us.
Video will follow as soon as we have someone walking with us, for now I have both my hands full with this little gem.❤️

UPDATE : both Dana and Roby had old trauma's resurface and got completely stressed out at the beginning of the journey. Hopefully they will both get used soon to the monotone engine sound and long hours in their benches.
Little Zeus took it all in his stride and was ok.

and so it begins....all aboard ready for the long journey to NL.
Butan helped them get on the bus as she has known and cared for them ever since they were saved and brought to Azoria. She put a special harness on Zeus so we can attach the safety lines to it as soon as he gets off the bus. He knows and trusts her so we asked her to help him put this on.

A very long journey as we don't expect them to arrive until Saturday in Hengelo, the stop for Dana and Roby. Zeus may have to endure his crate even longer as Amsterdam is one of the last stops and he may not even arrive until Sunday morning.

We will get the ETA list later today and we will keep you posted on the progress and of course the arrival.

Thank you Raluca Butan for being there with them, helping them on the bus and always there when they needed you in Romania.❤️
Thank you Madalina Danbu for giving them a safe place and caring for them after the horrors at the Azoria shelter. ❤️
Thank you Fiona Kelly and team and to all the kind people who helped raise funds to get them to NL.❤️
Thank you Dierenopvang Hengelo nw for being there for our dogs again, taking them in and helping them on their way to their adoptive homes.

MEET DANA 💖
The sweetest girl a human can have the pleasure to meet. She was rescued in March 2018 from a horrific situation in Romania where she was used as bait by a dog fighting ring.
She is still a little apprehensive about other dogs at first but absolutely loves humans.
Raluca Butan and Madalina Danbu have done a great job with her and she is ready to find her own home now in NL. She will go to the shelter we work with first so she has time to unwind, settle down and learn the basic commands.

FRANKIE - a joyful, bubbly, bouncing sweetheart.
He came from the Ovidiu kill shelter in Romania to the Azoria shelter and has arrived early this year in the Hengelo shelter in NL.
He is a wonderful dog but gets terrified when something unexpected happens, he then gets scared and makes himself very small and waits till the worst anxiety passes. This makes him a flight risk as well and we do not want to take any chances with our dogs. They have been through so much already and we want to make his new life here as good and happy as possible.
For this reason he stayed at the shelter a bit longer and is now ready for the next step in his journey to his forever home.
We were very lucky to find an experienced foster family that were very happy to take Frankie in.
Saturday is the big day when we will go to pick up Frankie in Hengelo and bring him to his foster home in Amsterdam.

Watch this space for updates on Frankie's journey on Saturday.

VERY GOOD NEWS
Luiza has gone home with 2 of the workers in the shelter. They were planning to adopt a dog but due to this crises that fell through so sweet Luiza is now at their home to see if this works for all of them. Keep your fingers crossed for this special old lady.

Cleo will get a visit soon from a family that are looking for a companion for their dog. Due to visiting restrictions the visit may take a little time to materialise but it will happen. Also for Cleo say a little prayer so she will find her new and forever home soon.

See, it can be done, even in countries like Bhutan so Romania, Ukraine, Greece etc...here is how you go about it.
This is a practical, legal and humane approach to deal with the increasing number of homeless animals on the street. Kudos to Prime Minister of Bhutan for taking this excellent initiative, giving out a message of tackling problems with a compassionate and humane approach 👍🏻🙏🏻👏🏻

Sterilisation of stray animals by the government and encouraging citizens to adopt them, give them a forever home, is the way to tackle the problem of increasing homeless animals on the streets.

All that these stray dogs and cats need is 2 meals a day, a caring family who loves them and looks after their basic needs.

NO STRAY DOGS IN NL ALREADY SINCE A DECADE💖

The new initiative is meant to curb the growing problem of stray dog population in Bhutan.

LUIZA was so happy and ran around wagging her tail until she suddenly stopped and cried out in some pain.
The vet came and checked her out, X rays will be done soon and she has been put on pain relief medication.
All these older dogs get hardly any exercise in the pens they live in back in Romania, this coupled with the long journey in a bench on the bus makes for very stiff muscles and joints. This has probably caused Luiza's discomfort but we will know more soon.
Meanwhile she now has a soft bed in the office where the staff can keep a close eye on her all the time...Luiza is not complaining!
The vet also checked all 4 dogs teeth and some cleaning is in order. Also Luiza has one rotten tooth which will be removed.
We are so lucky to work with a great shelter that is giving such excellent care to these four sweethearts.

A WORD OF CAUTION
As we have been asked several times to help out with a dog that got in trouble in NL after having been brought into the country by Romanian "rescuers" without all the necessary checks, vaccinations, preparations, tests and behaviour assessment done, we can certainly agree with the fact that one needs to be 100% certain of the organisation that brings rescued dogs from Romania and other countries into other EU countries like NL
A fall back network in case a placement doesn't work out is of the utmost importance as we have seen threats being made that a dog would be sent back to Romania unless something was done to resolve the situation immediately. A dog who has, or has developed a behaviour problem needs a stable environment and guidance, not a quick fix by dumping it on a well meaning neighbour.

In NL we have eliminated some of the diseases still prevalent in countries like Romania, so vet checks, vaccinations, tests and their own EU passport are incredibly important. A dog brought in on the back seat of the "rescuers" car may not have had any of these.

We have worked with the same and trusted rescuers in Romania for years, they have been absolute gems in taking great care of our dogs until a good foster home is found for them in NL. We work with an experienced shelter in NL with vet care available whenever needed and we have our own dog behaviour therapist who is instrumental in making sure the dog and new owner have a great and safe start and will have help and assistance whenever needed.

Far too often a dog is placed in a home without the new adoption family realising the trauma's all these dogs have and that all they want is to "get away from anything that scares them". This results in tragedies that are now a daily occurrence, of a rescued dog fleeing and escaping from their new owners after having been in a situation that has sent them into a panic. Rescue teams are working hard to try and find and, in the good endings, bring the dog back to its owner. Sadly quite a few end in misery, pain and even death if the dog runs into busy roads and is hit by cars or gets stuck and drowns in muddy waters.
Make sure your new family member is safe as well as loved.❤️

Last but not least, make sure you are not contributing to perpetuating a bad situation in a country rife with corruption. Make sure you don't help a rescued puppy when all this means is that you pay a lot of money to a rescuer to bring one over, just to have been instrumental in opening up a place in that country for a new puppy to be sold....Help stop the trade!

Amsterdam - getting everything ready to go to Hengelo tomorrow to welcome our 4 Romanian dogs to NL.

The car got fuller and fuller. Food and bedding for the bus to take back to Raluca Butan for our other Azoria sweethearts still in the cold in Romania.
Gifts from people in NL who have been deeply touched by the sad story of these dogs.

Also 4 brandnew stuffed soft toys for Luiza, Cleo, Frankie and Nova. Each will get their very own cuddly friend tomorrow to keep them company at the shelter, to put their tired heads on as a soft pillow and to take with them to their forever home.

A big thank you to all the people who helped, stored ,donated to make this possible.

In Memoriam Merlyn 💔and Banjo 💔

As Luiza, Leo, Nova and Frankie have begun their journey to NL we would like to say a few words about two sweet old dogs that were also supposed to come but didn't.

Their sad story
Merlyn and Banjo, lived with the other 100 dogs saved from the Ovidiu kill shelter in Azoria, waiting for their chance to leave a life of misery to come to a new safe home in NL.

The Azoria shelter is on the grounds of an elderly lady and her son who had rented out the kennels to a group of ladies from the UK who have sponsored the construction, vet costs and food for over 2 years.

Out of originally a group of 100 dogs saved from the infamous Ovidiu kill shelter, 60 found a new home in EU and for 40 dogs people were still working on finding them the same.
As there came many more dogs on to the grounds from the owners and other people (who had set up their ( allegedly Illegal) trade in rescue dogs) who were not taken care of so well and had several cases of distemper, our concern grew.
Disputes over various matters followed and when things started to go out of control 2 of our old dogs, sweet Merlyn and life loving Banjo, were found dead one early morning by their carers with obvious signs of violence on their bodies.
Of course all hell broke loose then....

The owner forbade our carers to enter the grounds again.

The police was warned and an investigation followed but the bodies by then had disappeared.

Through intense negotiations with the owners over the next few months by the NL team, which by that time was already involved and had offered to look for homes for some of the elderly dogs from Azoria, we managed to finally get all our dogs free and in January released into Maddy's care and transported to the new shelter.

Due to the sudden Distemper outbreak amongst our dogs, just 2 weeks after our carers were permitted to enter the grounds again late last year, most likely caused by the owners and others on the grounds who never took the appropriate precautions, the time it took for our first 4 to come to NL was severely delayed.
All dogs needed extra vaccinations, distemper tests and monitoring. We had 2 distemper cases, 1 dog who was taken into quarantine to the clinic in Bucharest for intensive treatment, recovered but then another dog also got ill and the disease progressed so fast that our vet sadly had to euthanise him.

The overall Romanian mentality as far as care for animals is concerned is sadly mostly lacking, usually animals are treated very badly and an animal life is basically simply worthless there. We are very lucky to work with trusted and caring Romanian people like Raluca Butan and Madalina Danbu, who are sadly still the exception to the rule.

Merlyn and Banjo were supposed to be on the bus today and we remember them with great sadness in our hearts. They had a hard life living on the streets when they were captured and taken to Ovidiu. Ovidiu was a place from hell and they suffered badly there.
The time at Azoria was not great but at least they were alive, had some cover from the brutal cold, got fed and looked after as well as was possible.

They then finally had their chance of going to their very own home in NL where it would be warm and safe, with love and good care for the rest of their remaining years.
Sadly it was not meant to be....

Today we take a few moments to remember them and share their sad story with you all.

Merlyn and Banjo for ever in our hearts
R.I.P. sweet souls 💖💖

Our 4 just before boarding the big bus at the Constanta meeting place earlier this morning.

She, (C)Leo and Frankie are next to- and opposite each other, while Nova is on the first floor.

Next the rest of the pickup places during the evening and night and then...BYE BYE ROMANIA FOREVER !

There will be stops at regular intervals where they can stretch their legs, p*e and poo and get their meals.

ALL 4 ON BOARD - Safe travels all ❤️❤️❤️❤️

They are now on the way to the various other pick up places within Romania. Tomorrow they will leave this country that has not been kind to them to come to a safe place in NL where they can slowly unwind and get used to life in another country, with new people and a language strange to them. They will gently be taught all the basics they will need to be adopted and go to their own forever home.

ROMANIA - yesterday
A busy day with a big surprise....Dr. Toader our veterinarian did a last vet check on the 4 and found that Leo is a female....
Registered as male, and by all accounts from the owner a boy so nobody doubted this. As many of the Ovidiu dogs were not used to being handled by people and in fact terrified of them often times this further escaped notice.
We are thrilled to have another girl on the dog team, a name change will be in order though 🤣

Luiza had her ear tag removed, these tags are used in Romania to indicate a dog has been sterilised.
All 4 had their final deworming tablets.

AZORIA - THE SAD STORY SO FAR

Forgotten Shelter of Azoria - NL·Sunday, October 27, 2019·

ROMANIA - The Netherlands - URGENT

An emergency situation has developed in the Romanian AZORIA shelter for rescued dogs which were saved in 2017 from the infamous OVIDIU KILL SHELTER.

Most of these dogs were saved from death row in 2017 and a new shelter was constructed in haste on the grounds of a landlord and his mother. Sadly after a while these dogs were almost forgotten and needed urgent care. Thanks to a committed Romanian investigative journalist who had been involved with this rescue from the start, Raluca Butan, the situation was saved. She alerted a group of friends in the UK who then stepped in and raised funds for food and helpers. Quite a few of these dogs have since been placed in good homes in the UK and other countries in EU thanks to this group of people.
