"Cause everything will change when you open your eyes. Don't you let the sunlight go by without you. Don't you realize how lucky we are. Open up your heart! Live your life like it was running out. Be alive we gotta scream it out. Nobody's holding you back, you gotta find the light that you are!"

Help needed! 🤞

I'm so grateful to be where I am today! 💫 Like literally, bcs hey traveling in Bali is an amazing adventure so far! But I've also learned in my life that life can be difficult but when you open your eyes you will always find love and beauty around you 💖

At the moment I'm at Gili Trawangan, an island near Lombok. The living standards here are a lot different compared to the Netherlands. This also affects the animals living on this island (horses and cats). Since there are no motor vehicles on the island they are depending on horses and carriage. A lot of the locals trying their best to take care of the horses as good as they can. But sadly I've seen horses (pony's) who are used for horse carriage that are not in a good shape. The loads they have to pull can be very heavy, most of the time in the burning sun, some have wounds from the tacks or are too skinny. If the horse is unlucky he/she can have an unpatient driver who will use the whipp if the horse is getting tired. Some of the horses are mentally shut down. It was quiet a shock for me when I arrived! I'm not trying yo create a negative image of Gili Trawangan. I've also seen horses who are in good shape and a driver who got off the carriage to push the carriage to help the horse pull it through a sandy area. There's is just a lot of room to improve horse welfare.

So when I arrived my goal was to help as good as I can without judging the people. I think staying out of judgement is a very good spiritual practise! Judging can come from a defense mechanisme, not wanting to see and feel the pain and not wanting to accept the situation it is today. It is very easy to do but most of the time not helpfull at all. It's always important to put yourself on someone else's shoes.

So the next day I arrived I went to STUD, a rescue centre for horses who also offer horse riding on the beach with a couple of the horses who are capable of carrying someone (they have max weight limit 👏) I met who is a beautiful soul helping so many animals on the island!! 💓

The goal of STUD is to help horses in need but also to create more awareness with the local people. Bcs of STUD there is now a rule that a driver has to have at least 3 horses so they can rotate the horses during the day. There is still a lot of room for improvement but change takes time!

During my stay here I've been visiting STUD everyday. I'm helping Emma train with a pony called Nova. She was a bit anxious but after a couple of sessions she made a lovely change already! Instead of walking away when she sees the halter she now walks towards us very happy and her eyes are much softer 🥰 I really like volunteering at STUD so now I'm kinda sad I have to leave in a couple of days 😢😉

Bcs STUD takes care of the horses so well and are helping to create more awareness to improve animal welfare I would really like to do something more to support STUD and the horses. So I thought, why don't aks my family/friends/connections in the Netherlands for help 😃

As we all know taking care of horses is quiet expensive so it would help STUD a lot if you can donate a little bit of money. It doesn't have to be a lot! Every small amount helps a lot especially since it's low season ar the moment! Things are less expensive here then in Europe. If you have some money to spend for the horses at STUD please send me or STUD a PM. They will be very grateful!!! 🙏💖

To give you an idea of the cost we present you a pricelist:
- 1 bag of pellets: €15 (they use 2 per day)
- 1 bag of grass: €2,50 (they use 9 a day)
- Water bill per month: €60
- Rice bran per month: €515

If you are still with me, thank you so much for your time! Together we can create positive changes in the live of animals and people 💖

WINTERSTOP... in BALI!! 😍

Hier ga ik een hond trainen en verzorgen ( # Do what you love and call it work ✨) Zo gaaf!

"To travel is to live" ✨🌏

WINTER BREAK... in BALI!! 😍

Back on Trail is currently taking a winter break. The training horses went home at the end of October and after 2.5 years of caring for the horses 7 days a week, I am currently taking a little hibernation 😉

"Coincidentally" some circumstances coincided that led to this period of rest coming my way. Unfortunately, my work at the Icelandic horse farm stopped at the end of October. I worked there for 2.5 years with such great pleasure! Due to the reduction in the number of horses, there is no more work for me at the moment. During this period I also decided to look for a new location for Back on Trail (more about that later, but I can already reveal that new training spots will be available again from April!!! 🤩).

This period of rest offers me the opportunity to make another dream come true: traveling! I'm flying to Bali on the 8th of January! 😱😍 I'm going on this adventure alone for 2 months. A chance to get out of my comfort zone in a positive way because hey, you only live this life once, right?! 😉

The first month I will "work" in exchange for room and board. I will stay in a beautiful place in Lovina (North Bali), 900 m from the beach. Here I will train and care for a dog ( # Do what you love and call it work ✨) So cool! In addition to training the dog, I will of course explore the area and continue with the online video course of The Trust Technique

After this month I will be traveling around for another whole month! I am going to stay for 1 week in 4 different places (Sidemen, Ubud, Nusa Penida and Uluwatu). Discovering new things, being amazed, enjoying, reading, spending time with a special friend, lots of nature and just having fun. I'm really looking forward to it!

Have you ever been to Bali? And do you have any nice tips? 😃

“Home is where the heart is” 💖

Last video in the Trilogy of Amélie! 🥰

Amélie is back home after 5 months of training. Are you curious how she and her owner are doing…? Make sure to watch the next video! 😃

Personally this video makes me SO happy!!! After putting a lot of time and love in the process of training/helping a horse and its owner, I always hope that things will continue in a positive way at home. I feel so happy for Janneke and Amélie that this is the case! It’s one of the reason I’m doing this job and I love it!! 💞

"The most important things in life are the connections you make with others" 🪄🦄

I had the honor of starting this amazing Icelandic horse under the saddle 🤩

It was such a cool and fun process! Fridur was quite furious in the beginning (like his manes😜), showing me he is a fierce guy. Okay, duly noted 😅 It was funny and cute to watch him behave like this but I had to teach him a more relaxed way of behaving bcs the goal was to prepare him for the kids to ride on him 🙄😂

In these months we've spent together we were able to connect in a strong way. He always came walking towards me, sometimes with a soft nicker when I came to pick him up in the pasture. Bad ass on the outside but such a sweeeetheart on the inside 😉😎😍

I love how he absorbed all the new information. He turned out to be a fun and relaxed riding horse in just a couple of months. And what an amazing view from his back, showing off his fierce manes. I simply love him! 💖

"Patience is not the ability to wait, but the ability to keep a good attitude while waiting." ✨

Yesterday was my last ride on this beautiful and talented Icelandic horse🥰 I started him under the saddle.

I learn something new about the equine language from every horse I train. This horse was such a sweet, gentle and patient teacher! 💓

And also a very smart student. In the beginning he was a bit shy but very soon he felt comfortable with the things I asked and made such great leaps in his development😍

I'm so grateful we were part of each others journey in life!🙏💜✨

"The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on the fighting the old, but on building the new." - Socrates

Happy New Year everybody!!!✨

I think this is one of the most inspiring quotes about change I know! 😍 And since it’s January and a lot of people have New Year’s resolutions I thought I’d write something about that. Because we all know it’s not that easy to change habits 😉

First of all, I always try to keep this quote in mind when working with a horse. For example when a horse shows “problem behaviour”. If we focus our energy on the behaviour we don’t like with a feeling that the horse shouldn’t be doing that, the easy outcome is that you correct the horse, send negative energy his way and give the horse the feeling that he can’t express himself. Since the “problem behaviour” is normally caused by stress, not knowing a better option or mis-learned behaviour, correcting the behaviour will only add on the frustration (Of course you wanna make sure your horse is not suffering from physical discomfort since that causes a lot of “problem behaviours!”). So instead of correcting the behaviour it’s way more helpful for the horse to give him a better option and when he finds that answer, reward him for that. Soon he will find out that you’re working with him instead of against him. And if your aids are making his body and mind feel better in the process he will even like the things you ask from him 😀

Do you know that you can also apply this piece of wisdom in all areas of your personal life…? For example if you would like to learn a new habit, like eating healthy instead of junk food. If you focus on the junk food part you will think about junk food a lot. And hearing yourself say that you can’t have it any more will create a feeling of wanting it even more. Instead of fighting the old habit, focus all your energy on what you DO want. Focus all your energy on the foods that are healthy and how you’re gonna achieve a healthy diet🍓🥦🥑🍌🍆 Collect recipes that are easy to make and flavourful, stock your house with fruits and veggies and reward yourself by going to a healthy restaurant when you reach a goal. Most importantly, visualize yourself in a good health, see a vision of yourself in the future, and become aware of how this will make you feel. As soon as you think about junk food during the day, become aware of it (your body follows your mind) and redirect your thoughts on the food you do want to eat or find something that will take your mind off food in the first place like going for a walk, making a puzzle or going to the gym. Or maybe you just need some rest..?

This example is about finding a healthy diet but you can of course apply this to any area! It takes about 100 days/3 months for something to really become a new habit.

I wish you (and me....! 😅😏😜) all the positive energy you need to start building the new for yourself and your horse!!✨💫💖

"You have to change on the inside before change will happen on the outside" ✨

Poyraz (¾ Arabian x ¼
Frisian Horse) went home after 2,5 months of training. He followed the Young Horse program and it went so well! 😀

His owner asked me to work with Poyraz because he
was easily upset over things. When he experienced stress it was very hard to reach him. He could not keep his focus. Standing still was not his thing and he could be very pushy. His owner tried to make a beginning with the lunging but Poyraz escaped out of the lunging circle a couple of times 🙈 He was afraid of the water hose, fly spray and could not be tied while brushing. There where things he needed to learn but there was also a lot of restlessness in his body and mind.

The first thing I worked on with Poyraz is how to find
relaxation and helping him to let go of piled up tension in the body. Everything that happens in the mind will also happen in the body and visa versa. So I knew if I could reach his mind, his body
would start to feel more relaxed which will make him feel good. When a horse experience a deep sense of relaxation he will actively start to search for it 😇

Because Poyraz was quite a pushy horse I had to explain him about boundaries. This also gave him peace of mind. Poyraz has a very strong character, in a good way. He knows what he wants and you
have to ask things of him fair but in a clear way with a lot of feel. In the beginning he would go against the questions I asked not knowing that it could actually help him to get more peace of mind.
I’m so happy about the change Poyraz made! To see him change from saying “no” to a lot of things to not only saying “yes”, but even try harder every single day was heart-warming! 🥰 And he is such an incredible smart horse! He figures things out so quickly! He is extravert so you know what he thinks about things very easy. For example our first training in the rain. Poyraz made himself very clear: lunging in the rain, not his things. Nope. He could not agree with me on this one. But since rain is part of life in the Netherlands I invited him to change his mindset about the rain. It was so funny to watch him change in 1 session from “I’m against it, period” to “okay, actually it’s not thát bad, I totally got this”.😆 All I had to do is reward at the right time and Poyraz showed me how beautiful he could trot.

During his training Poyraz learned a lot about groundwork, circling, basic handling, mindset training, redirecting focus and letting go of tension. I also sat on top of him and walked a few steps to prepare
him for the riding. He is still a bit young for the actual riding. That’s why he’s gone home for now but will come back next year to be started under the saddle. So looking forward to that!

Huge thank you to his owner for the trust she got in me, giving me this opportunity to work with such an incredible, smart and funny horse 🙏💖

"You were born to be real, not to be perfect" 💞

Video making and Social Media are a lovely way to capture and show all our positive and magical experiences in life ✨ Just always remember that these are snapshots of real life 😏

During the training process with your horse (and in life in general) you will experience ups & downs. The process is going to be perfectely imperfect. And that's the way it has to be. Because without those imperfects moments, you wouldn't have those precious learning moments which help you grow as a horse trainer and a human being in life 💖

New team member: welcome Teddy! 🐻😝😍

May I introduce you to the new team member of Back on Trail! 🐻🤎 His name is Teddy and he loooooves ro ride! Therefor he moves very enthusiastically during the riding. You can say he has quite a bouncy riding style 🤭

Teddy helps me when horses have fear/trauma for the rider. He would love to jump on right away but of course, after some explanation, he understands that he has to be introduced in small steps 😉 He also doesn't mind to fall off multiple times and stays very relaxed when a horse gets stressed 😇 With Teddy on top and me on the ground we can help the horse to feel safe and confident with movement on top of him.

And if I may say, I think Teddy is quite cute 🥰 what do you think?? 😃

Trainings stables full! 😍

I'm so incredibly grateful that the stables I have available for horses in training are now completely filled with lovely horses!! (and pony's 😍😉)

I've now opened a waiting list where one spot is already filled 🤩 So happy!!

In a couple of months I have training stables available again since the horses that are now in training will be home by then. Let me know if you are interested or if you would like some more information or visit Back on Trail for that matter.

Trainingshorses from left to right:

Jesley: 12 years old PRE, process already finished but sticks with me for a while longer 💕

Valstad: 3 years old Fjord, in training for basic young horse training bcs he had some issues with handling like pulling away and running off 🙉 with him I'm doing only the groundwork since his body is not ready to be started under the saddle 😉

Howie: 11 years old Tinker, who came to me bcs he has gone through some traumatic experiences in his life. He used to hold on to tension, but not anymore! 🥰 now in the middle of helping him to trust a rider again.

Liam: 4 years old giant who is in training to be started under the saddle 😊 just finished riding him in the roundpen where we did our second canter! 😍

All the horses have their own very interesting process and I'm learning so much from them!! 💫💞
