Does Your Dog….. Bark at strange people? Lunge at unknown/known dogs? Panic when approaching unfamiliar objects? Melt down when not allowed to greet someone?

Go wild at cats, squirrels or birds? Become difficult to walk past distractions? Behavior Adjustment Training is a dog friendly method for rehabilitating and preventing reactivity in dogs, BAT works by helping dogs learn socially acceptable ways to deal with the things that scare or upset them. BAT training will teach you to read and support your dog and will teach your dog the self control and co
nfidence they need to make better calm choices. It teaches two way communication, which builds a more powerful relationship between people and their dogs. I have noticed a significant , positive change between dogs and their owners when I teach them BAT and have used it with my own dogs with very positive results.

Somehow you manage to escape to the outside during the constant rain and help owners with these 2 cuties
I am very proud of this certification. Working under the careful eyes of Suzanne has taught me well. High five to me :)
So pleased to have Jennie Murphy as our newest Treat/Retreat Certified Instructor. Her outstanding work in this course set a high bar for thoughtful, aware and compassionate training. Brilliantly done, Jennie!
3 different dogs with different functional needs. One is oh so shy and shuts down when presented with new people and environments. One guards his human and the other reacts to other dogs. I love the challenge of creating a plan or offering suggesting to my pet parents on how to work toward satisfyingly their dogs functional need
BAT or Behavior Adjustment Training is a protocol for dogs who react to certain triggers in their environment. In this video the client was learning the basics of BAT with no triggers present (ideally) and her comments to me at the end of the walk sums up the beauty of a BAT walk for decompression. So even if we never add a trigger this dogs world has now been enriched

A Rock Solid Dog is honored to be mentoring dog trainer Janelle Binsfield for her certification to be a Control Unleashed Certified Trainer
There are over 25 videos (with different subsets) these mentees need to make.

The final stamp of approval is made by Leslie McDevitt -the founder of Control Unleashed
This fabulous video is the final part of teaching our dogs all about Voluntary Sharing - which is a great way to teach dogs that resource guard how to use their own behavior to give permission to share resources.
Hats off to Janelle for this awesome video and thank you Janelle for allowing me to show your skill. Well Done

This is what Juno thought of her certificate. Thanks for training with A Rock Solid Dog Juno and make sure your owners keep practicing.
As yet another winter storm is approaching, we will unlikely be able to go out and walk the dog! This fun hunting game might just be the game to play. The dog in this video is an expert hunter/seeker/untying knot pro!!! You may have to start easier with your own dogs. Perhaps just rolling up the facecloth or towel and/or starting to hide in easy places (perhaps even letting the dog see where you hide) . If your dog likes to chase you might even toss the towel -tap into what your dog enjoys.
Inspired by this dogs owner , dog trainer Nancy Tucker, A Rock Solid Dog filmed Benni"s lunch prep and subsequent hunt for his lunch.

So many signals given by this dog. Totally unavoidable - thank goodness the dog showed some bite inhibition.
This was not a lightbulb moment for the dogs understanding -she was 100 percent understanding our desired goal - i.e. the behavior to give in order to earn reinforcement
This was an OWNER lightbulb moment
Part of my job as a behavioral consultant is helping my clients understand the principles of learning
Have a watch to see how the lightbulb goes on in these wonderful pet owners heads!!!!!

A GSD after my own heart
HAND TOUCH FOR ERRORS
We all make errors with our dogs as much as we try to set up for errorless learning.
Some dogs are more resilient than others and will keep trying again and again
Other dogs are very sensitive to not receiving reward for what they thought was the correct response OR better stated for putting forth effort to our ask.
My dog Ben falls into the more sensitive side. I always aim to teach him tasks in small steps.(as one should for all dogs)
In this fun training set up my goal is for him to retrieve the item and place it in the basket. He has played this many times with different objects and understands his job.
He tries 3 x but the item is not placed successfully in the basket. I do not want more than 3 failures -if I get 3 failures I need to change something in my training plan - which you will see me do.
Each time he tries to place the item in the basket , in order to keep his motivation up I ask for a hand touch as a means to immediately have a way to reward him. It puts the dog back into a positive mindset and can minimize frustration for the dog and handler.
Whether your dog is resilient or sensitive, I highly recommend after 3 errors with an incorrect response to your request you change something in your plan to create success and the opportunity to reward your dog

The small things that make being a trainer a rewarding job. Yes indeed watching the dogs confidence grow as they learn how to navigate a sometimes scary world is wonderful. But here it is the small "awwwwwe" I hear this owner say when her dog approaches me within touching distance for the first time. (but heck I don't touch) This made my day - one has to listen carefully but its there <3 #Treatretreat #humanscanbescary
Guess what......... I am a bad dog trainer. Look at Benny practicing undesirable behavior -squealing, pulling on leash and running around like a maniac looking for his friend Linda. Linda and Ben have a connection plus she gives the best doggy massages. I'm a bad dog trainer and I don't care
Stormy night supper -how did your dogs enjoy their supper? I love the sound of the sniff and the slurp (I am easily amused)
Puppies are such busy creatures. A Rock Solid Dog recently had the opportunity to take care of a sweet 4 month Border Collie named Juni B for 5 days. Those 5 days were filled with lots of learning, playing and resting opportunities all done at the puppy's pace Have a look at some of the things I feel are the most important in raising a puppy. Thanks to her owner for trusting me with her precious pup- she has done a fabulous job with her. One of the best pups that could settle for a nap! (AND SLEPT ALLLLLL NIGHT IN A STRANGE HOUSE)
A Rock Solid Dog believes in a holistic approach to dog training. Did you know there are specific ways you can touch your dog that can influence their behavior? These touches are known as T Touch. They affect the parasympathetic nervous system ,this is part of our nervous system that is responsible for counteracting arousal and help calm the dog. They lower stress, relax muscles lower blood pressure and heart rate! I think you will agree that they could be very beneficial to our dogs with big emotions! Have a look at one such touch!
Nothing exciting to the human eye in this video but for this dog the ability to run, to explore , to sniff, to just be a dog is huge! #decompression #longlinesafety #urbanstressreduction
MANAGING REACTIVITY : If your dog responds to his name and can follow a treat lure this easy game of increasing distance from a potentially unwanted situation can be useful. The key is to practice this game in NON distracting areas to start, to create muscle memory and a high reinforcement history. If it is still challenging we can break this game down into smaller pieces-reach out if you need help
I just want to let you know I studied hard and am a certified and educated professional dog trainer. This video proves it
Start your week with a smile! Here is a short video that an on line client shared with me and it is too cute not to share with you!!! #puppylife
I have a few on line clients and nothing makes me happier than when they send me videos showing their successes. Just look at this sweet Westie checking in with her mom on a walk and responding to the 1-2-3 Pattern Game. #looseleashwalking #proudtrainer #highfive
Teaching our dogs jumping up is not appreciated. Dogs provide us with information all the time... Nellie is learning not to jump on people. We break down our goals into bite size pieces "explaining" to her what it is we want. Note how she tells me that me walking away from her is easy. She is able to reach me and sit. When I up my energy level she finds it harder to think BUT her 4 feet on the floor is equally rewardable as it is not jumping. My increased energy raised her arousal and she could not think as clearly -that is great information to know as we go forth
Puppies are not born into our world understanding our human rules. As owners it is our job to teach them what it is we want from them without the use of intimidation and pain. At the same time we need to always ask ourselves what is the dogs need -what is it they are seeking/requiring. Here sweet Ruby is learning she can get her stick without jumping.
Our goal for dogs with emotional issues is to always try and keep them below threshold (i.e. a place where they can see a Trigger but not react) However life happens and here A Rock Solid Dog is helping a client learn how to move her dog away.
Does your dog dive for food when it falls off the counter? Here A Rock Solid Dog is explaining to Sadie how better things happen if she doesn't. Good girl Sadie!
