Ehrlichia canis is an obligate intracellular bacterium that acts as the causative agent of ehrlichiosis, a disease most commonly affecting canine species. This pathogen is present throughout the United States (but is most prominent in the South), South America, Asia, Africa and recently in the Kimberley region of Australia. First defined in 1935, E. canis emerged in the United States in 1963 and its presence has since been found in all 48 contiguous United States. Reported primarily in dogs, E. canis has also been documented in felines and humans, where it is transferred most commonly via Rhipicephalus sanguineus, the brown dog tick.

🐾🐾Ehlers-Danlos syndrome(EDS) also called cutaneous asthenia, a genetic defect causes an abnormal structure of the collagen fibers, the skin and joints are weakened. This causes looseness in the joints that can lead to lameness, and severely fragile skin that is susceptible to frequent injuries from even minor scratches. Skin tears can enlarge and become infected, and lead to scars and subcutaneous hematomas.
Other body tissues can also be affected by this collagen deficiency, including the eyes, heart, diaphragm, perineum, and blood vessels. This rare condition primarily affects English Springer Spaniels breeds of dogs and Himalayan breeds of cats, but can be seen in other breeds like German Shepherd, Beagles, Dachshunds.

🐾 Clinical management of EDS- Cats are best kept indoors. Dogs can be walked on a leash away from vegetation with thorns or other sharp points.
Any wounds are promptly treated using mattress sutures with minimal tension and allowing extra time for healing to take place.
With care, affected animals can live their normal life span, although repeated trauma episodes requiring wound treatment may prompt a request for euthanasia.
Severely affected puppies have a risk of death, but in its mild or moderate forms, it is not fatal and can be managed by a controlled environment.

🐾 Prognosis - Severely affected puppies usually will not survive, but dogs with a mild or moderate form will generally live a normal lifespan, but they will be at risk of frequent skin tears and injury. EDS is incurable and animals should not be bred from since 50% of their puppies will inherit the gene.

Rabies virus (RABV) is transmitted through direct contact (such as through broken skin or mucous membranes in your eyes, nose, or mouth) with saliva or brain/nervous system tissue from an infected animal. Rabies is fatal but preventable. It can spread to people and pets if they are bitten or scratched by a rabid animal.

Puppy Impetigo🐕-

Canine impetigo is a common problem in young prepubescent dogs that have been kept in poor, unhygienic conditions.

Reasons for impetigo my include compromised immune system, weak endocrine system, flea, insect bite, mange, food allergy, urine scalding.
From the above mentioned reasons, urine scalding is most common one. Hence, improvements in the cleanliness of puppy's environment can make significant difference in the recovery time.

It is caused by Staphylococcus infection (Gram positive bacteria).

Signs: Pus filled blisters, small patches of inflammed skin, areas of acne or rash, hair loss. Impetigo lesions are commonly seen on the belly, face and chin of puppy.

Canine impetigo is non-contagious, unlike impetigo in humans.

Treatment may include topical use of Mupirocin, Neomycin, Polymyxin, Chlorhexidine, Benzoyl peroxide and oral antibiotics in severe cases.

Prognosis is good to great if the cause is eliminated and treatment will hasten the response which would be visible within 1-2weeks. Spontaneous resolution is also possible with improvement in management alone. (See before and after pics.)
