Ganoderma Applanatum or more commonly known as (Artist conk) cousin to the Famous Rieshi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) is a bracket fungi that grows on both dead and living trees, it gets it name from the fact that you can use any sharp object to like a twig to draw on it, it has been used for many art canvases, but more importantly is a very valuable medicinal mushroom that has been used for many years in Chinese medicine to treat rheumatic tuberculosis and esophageal carcinoma. It can also help with indigestion, pain relief and to break down phlegm, conducted studies also have strong evidence pointing towards anticancer, immunomodulating, and antibacterial properties πŸ„ although not physically edible, you can extract terpenoids and beta glucans from the cell walls and make teas or tinctures β˜•οΈ

Ileodictyon cibarium or more commonly known as β€œBasket fungus” is found in New Zealand, Australia, Tanzania and South Africa. A not so known fact about them is that they are an edible species and I only recently found this out! They have been a Maori Delicacy for years so I thought I would take some to find out what they taste like πŸ˜„ as far as taste goes I have no complaints! A slight cheese taste with a earthy taste, a jelly like texture almost like eating fat, apparently doesn’t smell so good but my nose couldn’t pick up on any bad smells so I can’t answer that! Traditionally eaten in egg form not so sure about basket form which I skipped on my test trials πŸ˜„ the more you know πŸ„πŸ„

Due to the self voluntary excavation of my garden from the good boy πŸ•β€πŸ¦Ί the garden has been changed πŸ˜…πŸ˜‚

I now have pumpkins galore! First there was 8 and then they wouldn’t stop appearing πŸ˜‚ (all accidentally) Grown in my spent mushroom blocks and colonised straw it makes for a good growing medium for my plants!

One of the photos is kumara brown from a single kumara I am testing how much can grow off of a single kumara 🍠

If there’s one thing I’m all about it’s self sufficiency and being able to turn my old mushroom blocks into a garden medium saves me money on buying actual compost πŸ˜„

Starting to think I need to sell plants also πŸ˜„

Enjoy your day 🌿🌱

Hello everyone I hope all is well πŸ˜„

I will be running workshops soon πŸ›

To start it off I will go through some theory work with you to explain the life cycle of a mushroom and cover the ins and out of cultivating in grow bags and buckets πŸ„

Followed by a demonstration on how to pack grow bags with the correct water to substrate ratio and how to sterilise / inoculate the substrate. I will also explain and demonstrate how to get the most of out the grow blocks!

The next one is mostly for those who want to save on plastic waste and money πŸ’°

I will demonstrate how to Pasteurise straw for mushroom cultivation inside buckets, I will show you how to correctly layer the substrate inside with the grain spawn to make sure you get best results!

I will then do a recap to summarise the workshops activities and give you a chance to ask questions and have them answered πŸ˜„

At the end of it you will receive :

- A booklet on how to cultivate your own mushrooms at home made by myself πŸ“

- A variety pack valued at $50 which includes

1 x 3kg Phoenix oyster grow block

1 x 3kg Native oyster grow block

1 x 3kg Pink oyster grow block

WHY?

Well… Its a growing thing. β€œNo pun intended”

Mushrooms can be expensive especially oyster mushrooms, so having the knowledge to grow them yourself and the practical skills is not only rewarding but beneficial on your wallet, not only that but you get to have the freshest mushrooms possible!

Mushrooms have an array of health benefits so having the knowledge to grow them is like having the knowledge to grow medicine πŸ˜„

You will also be learning a skill which you could potentially turn into a new career for yourself πŸ‘¨β€πŸŒΎπŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎ

sadly only half full but next round it will be full 😊 the upcoming video will show how much a humidity chamber enhances the results of mushroom cultivation and also how to recycle grow blocks ♻️♻️ πŸ„πŸ„

For people who don’t want to grow on a large scale I will make a video tutorial on how to make up your own small humidity chamber for small scale production πŸ˜„

Hello everyone I hope you have all been having a good year so far!

Tomorrow I will be updating my shop as I have decided it’s time I up the size of the grow blocks so they are now double the size which means double the Mushrooms for the same price πŸ˜„

I will also have the old size available for just $10! πŸ„

I finally have the video on how to cultivate mushrooms in buckets underway so in the next 3 weeks once the mushrooms grow I will be uploading the video as promised last year πŸ˜…

I have also started a new garden which I would like to share with people who want or need food! The garden will only get bigger πŸ˜„ I have mushroom logs that spontaneously grow mushrooms so I will be letting people know when they grow those who want some can come and collect some!

I have green houses which I will be cramming with blocks to grow fresh mushrooms very soon for markets like The Shed Collective which I will be attending this week end on Saturday 9am - 1pm, as I set up the inside of them with humidifiers and exhaust fans I will share with you how exactly I do that!

A bit more of an in depth description on how to grow the oyster mushroom blocks πŸ˜„ with photos of the mushroom graveyard / organic bug diversion outside πŸ˜„

Step 1: Open the bag up by removing the rubber band and squeeze the air out.

Step 2: Twist the excess plastic until the bag is snug on the block, fold it over and band it, make sure there is no air pockets around the block this reduces the possibility of mushrooms growing where you don't want them to grow as they are oxygen breathers.

Step 3: Cut an X shape into the plastic the size of the front face the best you can without cutting into the block itself, if you accidently cut into the block its fine, then open up the plastic flaps and spray the block with water using a spray bottle 2 - 3 times a day.

GROWING ENVIRONMENT: Mushrooms like a shaded / indirect sunlight position the cooler the better but oyster mushrooms are pretty flexible when it comes to temperature. For example inside on the kitchen table where it gets 2 - 3 hours of direct light at max or even a full day of indirect or filtered light is fine.

GROW TIME AND HARVEST: With in 1 week of opening the grow block mushrooms will start to grow and once they start growing they will be ready to harvest within 5-7 days. For best quality mushrooms harvest them before the edges of the caps face upwards, this is because when the edges start to face upwards the mushroom is maturing and will sporulate then proceed to decay and break down. If you harvest early you have more versatile mushrooms and they also have a longer shelf life, It is possible to get more flushes / growth out of the blocks but much harder in the summer unless you have a fruiting chamber.

STORAGE: Native Oyster mushrooms have a shelf life of around 1 week in the refrigerator ( best kept in a container with the lid slightly open so they can breath. The reason their shelf life is so short is because they are relatively thin in comparison to buttons and Portobello's so they lose their moisture content faster.
