The Auckland council is proposing that dog walkers are allowed a maximum of 6 dogs at one time and only 3 off leash. They are also planning to update the access to over 70 parks in Auckland that will greatly reduce the areas you can walk your dog.
This will not only affect dog walkers, but dog owners. The availability of pack walkers will be greatly reduced as it will be harder to make a living from it and there will be fewer parks where your dog can run free.
The new rules are not unwarranted, yet they do not appear to address the real issue. There should be regulations in place to enter the industry and continuous education and oversight to maintain safety standards. However, putting a blanket limit is not the answer.
To have your say, please provide feedback to the council before February 23, 2025. The more feedback the council receives on this issue, the more likely they are to reconsider the changes and listen to what the Canine Industry Standards Association has to say. Please also tell any dog owners you know or friends and family members to do the same. Feedback submissions can be made at;
