Malassezia, a type of yeast, is a common cytology finding on the skin and ears.
We often get asked where pets have got this yeast from, but it's actually a normal part of the skin! Itchy dogs and cats are prone to over growing Malassezia, which makes them more itchy.
Some pets also become allergic to their own yeast, which increases the itch even more!
Has your pet been diagnosed with a Malassezia overgrowth?
Congratulations to the beautiful Maddie who recently won our client giveaway π
We've seen lots of ear infections (otitis) in the clinic this week.
Ear infections are common in dogs and cats with allergies and can sometimes be the only symptom of an underlying allergy.
If left untreated or not treated correctly, ear infections can lead to irreversible changes to the bone in the middle ear, which then requires surgery.
We work hard to identify and manage the underlying trigger to each patient's ear infection, use appropriate treatment, and teach you how to prevent the infection from reoccurring. We also have access to advanced imaging, along with our video otoscopy, to treat more advanced infections and reduce the likelihood of surgery being needed.

Removing these ceruminoliths (hard balls of wax and debris) with our video otoscope, means;
βοΈ We protected the ear drums from being ruptured (busrt) and spreading infection to the middle ear.
βοΈ Ear medications and cleaning will now be more effective. Ceruminoliths can act as a source of infection, and can be the reason ear infections won't clear up.
βοΈ This patient will now be much more comfortable!
We love it when The pink stethoscope comes to visit π So we had to give her one of our new tote bags!
We've been having some anaesthesia refreshers with Marcia to make sure we are providing our patients with the best care possible.
Easter treats for today's clients π°

Cuddles before Bella's intradermal allergy test π
Bella had positive reactions to a mixture of pollens, mould spores, dust mites, cats, humans, moths, mosquitoes, and flies!
Bella started on immunotherapy, which will provide long-term relief of her itching by retraining her immune system.
Proudly sharing this incredible patient progress update π©·
This sweet girl has come a long way under the guidance of our specialist and the hard work of her mum! She has her fur back, she's not itchy and best of all she's feeling good πΎ
An intradermal allergy test to start our day π
This gorgeous patient had positive reactions to lots of pollens, dust mites, storage mites, moths, wool and feathers.
We'll be starting Immunotherapy to retrain the immune system into becoming less reactive, which will mean less itching and less medication π πΎ
Waiting so patiently for that well-deserved treat! We make sure that our treats are food allergy friendly, so those on diet trials don't miss out πΎπ¦΄

Intradermal allergy testing and immunotherapy are just one of the many ways we can manage environmental allergies in pets, but here's why we think it's pretty awesome π
We love incorporating phovia into our management plans, especially when it's this easy! This patient has superficial pyoderma (infection) that we are treating using the phovia system once weekly. We apply a special gel and use the lamp to activate the gel and all its amazing properties! We do two back to back sessions a week, taking 2 minutes each session. Phovia reduces inflammation, has antimicrobial properties, and encourages wound healing and collagen production
Intradermal allergy testing is a tool we use to identify which environmental allergens are triggering our patients with atopic dermatitis. π± Our test panel contains 58 different allergens, including pollens, dust mites, humans, fibers, and insects. π± Small amounts of each allergen are injected under the skin, and each reaction is scored positive or negative. π± This is not how we test for food allergies. Food allergy can only be diagnosed through a strict elimination diet trial. π± This test is only recommended if immunotherapy will be used as a management tool. While it's nice to know what allergens are causing the problem, almost all of the allergens we test for are unavoidable
The toothpick technique This technique allows us to easily get cytology samples from around the nail bed, a place where Malassezia likes to hide. While it looks a little uncomfortable, most pets donβt notice at all
