Cytology is a quick and easy test that lets us identify microbes on the skin and in the ears.
This is how we confirm a secondary infection, not by how something looks or smells ๐ฆ ๐ฆ
Without cytology, we can not determine which antimicrobial to give your pet - remember we've been talking about microbial resistance, so knowing which medication to give is very important.
Sometimes we'll need to take a culture - which is a swab that gets sent to laboratory. The bacteria from this swab is grown, with each species identified and then a range of antimicrobial are tested against each bacteria. This is how we find out if we have resistance.
We will usually recommend a culture when:
๐ฆ Your pet has had a recent course of antimicrobials and we are still seeing high numbers of microbes on cytology
๐ฆ Your pet has high numbers of microbes on cytology and they have had lots of treatment using the same family of antimicrobials
๐ฆ If we see Rod shaped bacteria on cytology. This type of bacteria is known to be more resistant and a little trickery to treat
Food allergies happen when the immune system overreacts to certain foods ๐ฅฉ๐
The most common culprits are proteins like chicken and beef or dairy. This is only because these are common ingredients our pets get fed.
We often hear owners report the itching only after changing the diet, but for the immune system to become hypersensitive, it needs to be exposed to these allergens over time.
Food allergies are most commonly seen in dogs under 1 year old. Cats can develop food allergies at any age
When it comes to dogs itching, it can be tricky to know what's normal and what's not.
Here's a tip: all the doggos in this video are itchy!
Normally, dogs lick themselves to groom, but if they stop to itch (licking, chewing, or rolling) during a walk, playtime, or even when they should be distracted, like when they're visiting us, then it's not just grooming. They're itchy.
There's lot of reasons they get itchy and these reasons can be managed.
Captain Jack (Dr. Who, not Sparrow) had a lot to say about his visit yesterday.
Jack has been experiencing flaky dry nails, and we identified a secondary infection on cytology. Jack has started some medication to treat the bacterial overgrowth ๐ฆ
We can't wait to see Jack back for chats, cuddles, and to see how much he has improved.
We love some impressive positive reactions on an intradermal allergy test ๐คฉ
Removing these ceruminoliths (hard balls of wax and debris) with our video otoscope, means;
โ๏ธ We protected the ear drums from being ruptured (busrt) and spreading infection to the middle ear.
โ๏ธ Ear medications and cleaning will now be more effective. Ceruminoliths can act as a source of infection, and can be the reason ear infections won't clear up.
โ๏ธ This patient will now be much more comfortable!
Intradermal allergy testing and immunotherapy are just one of the many ways we can manage environmental allergies in pets, but here's why we think it's pretty awesome ๐

Once a month we are in Wellington seeing cases at Kelburn vets, here's a peak at our ast visit
