If you can learn the difference and can recognise when your dog is simply mock growling when playing either with their toy, with you or even with their buddy, it can actually be quite funny and definitely nothing to be scared of. Not all growling is to show aggression. And this is why it’s so important to learn about dogs body language, so you can read situations and know when something is ok or if it’s actually something you need to be watching and ready to intervene.

I personally think Mark Vette - Animal Behaviourist is an amazing trainer to follow, so if you’re not already following him, then pop over and give him a follow ☺️❤️🐾

GROWLING IN PLAY!

You’ve found yourself reading post 4 in my little series about commonly misunderstood dog behaviours.

I recently had a message from an upset dog owner, who was worried about their puppy’s aggression. The puppy had been growling at the owner and at other dogs too! Of course, this sounds concerning and I suspected potential resource guarding, and asked to see a video. But lo and behold, when the videos came through, I could see the puppy was only playing (phew).

Puppy play can be quite vocal and even vicious sounding, but generally speaking, growling during play is nothing to be concerned about. It’s normal for your pup to growl while playing a competitive game of tug-o-war with you, or while play fighting with other well-matched pups and dogs. As long as everyone is enjoying the play, it’s all good.

Your dog does not have to be perfectly trained!😱 😱 😱

From what you see on social media these days, you might think that if your dog isn’t trained to military standards, you are failing as a dog owner. I’m here to tell you that’s not the case!

We often see people who get stressed because their puppy won’t walk in a heel for the entire walk, or sit quietly during a 2 hour meeting. When in reality - these are unrealistic expectations for a puppy! For example with walking, we suggest an 80/20 rule - 80% of the time walking either off lead (if safe) or on a long lead or retractable to allow your pup the freedom to sniff and enjoy their environment, and 20% of the walk practising a heel command.

There are some commands that we DO want to be really reliable for your dog’s own safety and other people and animals’ comfort - such as Come and Leave It. But at other times, it’s okay for a dog to run, play and be a goofball.

Dogs are unique BEINGS and COMPANIONS, not robots, ornaments or status symbols. And sometimes, a bit of naughtiness can be the thing we love most about our dogs!

We don’t want to take away their personalities or break their spirit, it’s not about training to the extreme, it’s about having good manners and being able to function happily together in this world. We want to create a relationship where your dog WANTS to listen to you, but leave space for those cheeky little traits that make them, them.

For example, my old dog Monty was a chronic shoe stealer, he wouldn’t chew them, just carry them around and cart them off to his lair. Yes, I could have trained him out of this but it was just too cute! 👟
