📣WE ARE AT CAPACITY📣

We have 2️⃣8️⃣ dogs in care at the moment with another ️4️⃣ waiting to come in, and we have had to turn away 6️⃣ last week.

We do not have the space, resources or ability to take in anymore. We are stretching our current foster base very thin and we are facing having to close our doors. 😭

This is just a snapshot in the last month of public / community assistance required, not including our commitment we have to the pound dogs that need us too.
As much as we would like to take in every dog, we can't save them all, which really saddens us. We do this for the dogs! To keep them safe and give them a second chance at a better life and we are struggling. 💔💔

❗We need you on our team. We are calling out for foster families ❗

If you are able to open your heart 💖 and home 🏡 for our furry friends, we would love to hear from you. Please see us a message, where you will be prompted to fill in our foster application.
Alternatively, you can comment below with your interest, or fill in our foster application here --> https://forms.gle/sbkrkfYFdiQBRAmB6

Animals aren’t ‘stock’. They aren’t commodities. They aren’t freight. They are living, breathing, sentient beings. They deserve our care and respect.

Please open your eyes and wake up to the horrific reality of where animal products come from. The more good people refuse to support these heartless industries, the less demand for animal products, the less pain, suffering and cruelty in the world.

Rest in peace, beautiful creatures. 😢💔

🚨 IT’S HERE! 🚨

Respected New Zealand veterinarian Dr. John Hellstrom has submitted a Parliamentary petition, “That the House of Representatives not repeal the Animal Welfare Amendment Act 2022, which amended the Animal Welfare Act 1999 to ban the export of livestock by sea.”

Dr. Hellstrom writes, “I believe our export ban is world-leading. It was heavily supported by submissions and the National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee. In my view, reversing this legislation, as proposed by the coalition agreement, would disregard public sentiment, condemn animals to suffering during shipment and at destinations, throw away years of progress, and harm NZ’s international reputation. It would also be the first time to my knowledge that NZ legislates to reduce rather than enhance animal welfare.”

We have 103 DAYS to get as many signatures as we can to show the government Kiwis don’t support cruelty! 🐮🚢🚫

Make your voice heard. SIGN the petition and share, share, share! ➡️📋 https://petitions.parliament.nz/79ff1ae2-f2e8-43c5-6c98-08dc33f5abe2

Today, SAFE received devastating news of yet another animal transport truck that rolled over, the second since Waitangi weekend.

While we won't share the frankly horrific images, it is important the story of these animals is told.

Eyewitness, and Taranaki Animal Save representative Matt Coffey, said “Looking into the eyes of the animals it was clear to see their immense pain and distress. It was devastating to watch them being dragged from the wreckage with chains and little regard for their lives.”

This tragic incident serves as yet another reminder of the inherent dangers of transporting animals for human consumption. Long journeys are known to induce stress and cause injuries, and animals are often exposed to extreme heat or cold without access to food or water. Not to mention, collisions, like this one, can occur with devastating consequences.

Millions of animals are transported on Aotearoa's roads every year with little regard for their welfare and change is well overdue.

It's time to demand accountability and demand better conditions for these sentient beings. Aotearoa needs a Commissioner for Animals to ensure that all practices and policies, including for transport, ensure these animals do not suffer.

🚨 BREAKING 🚨

SPCA New Zealand has commissioned an independent survey to understand the sentiment of mainstream New Zealand towards repealing the live export ban. See the results here: https://www.spca.nz/news-and-events/news-article/live-exports-public-opinion

🟢 Only 19% of respondents agree that the ban should be overturned
🟢 83% think we cannot guarantee how animals are treated at the destination
🟢 Just 12% of respondents trust the live export industry
🟢 60% say overturning the ban would damage New Zealand’s reputation for animal welfare
🟢 56% of respondents who identify as farmers, or involved in the farming industry, think that livestock export by sea should be banned

"It is clear that to overturn the ban would throw away years of progress, disregard public sentiment, put our reputation at risk, and condemn hundreds of thousands of animals to suffering caused by long sea journeys. Live exports are entirely unethical, and we must not allow this cruel practice to return." — SCPA NZ

Thank you SPCA New Zealand for undertaking this survey and speaking out for the animals. ❤️🐮

Shared with permission from Animal Save Aotearoa New Zealand:

"In the wake of the recent national election, both the Act and National Party have signalled their intent to revive live export by sea, a practice halted in April. In response to welfare concerns, assurances have been made that the revived industry will employ purpose-built ships adhering to the highest welfare standards, promising a comfortable journey for the animals on board.

However, scepticism arises in light of recent statements by Mark Willis, Head of Livestock Export New Zealand. Willis claimed that the ships used prior to the ban were already operating at a near "gold standard” and he expressed being "unaware in the last two years of any veterinary diagnosis of heat stress."

These statements, however, are at odds with voyage reports obtained by Animal Save Aotearoa under the Official Information Act. Animal Save spokesperson Elin Arbez states, “Multiple documented cases of heat stress, recorded by onboard veterinarians, challenge Mr Willis’ statement, and the notion that the previous industry standards were as exemplary as claimed. For instance, during the May 2021 sailing of the Brahman Express, heat stress was identified as the cause of death for four cows, according to veterinary diagnoses.”

The released reports reveal a litany of injuries and health issues prevalent during these voyages, including fractures, lacerations, abscesses, necrotic wounds, arthritis, respiratory issues, and premature birth/lactation. Contagious conditions like ringworm, pinkeye, and gastrointestinal problems were also prevalent. The data from 2021 and 2022 indicate that thousands of cows experienced lameness, some progressing to severe stages necessitating euthanasia. Shockingly, over 6,000 cows perished before reaching China, with an additional 300 deaths occurring in the 30-day post-voyage quarantine period.

Animal Save Aotearoa asserts that exporting live animals from New Zealand to China via sea is fundamentally unethical and incompatible with any notion of "high welfare." Instead of offering false promises to farmers, the government should prioritise supporting a transition to more sustainable and profitable alternatives, such as plant-based proteins and fibres."

Awful news for animal lovers in Hawke's Bay 😢 Rodeo is coming back to our beautiful region.

We will be organising a protest against this event (location and date TBA so WATCH THIS SPACE) to make it clear to these clowns that this barbaric spectacle is NOT welcome in Te Matau a Māui. 😡

The last open division rodeo on a national circuit in Hawke’s Bay was held back in 2008.
