❌❌❌SEVERE HEAT WARNING FOR CANTERBURY/EASTERN PARTS❌❌❌

Temperatures are supposed to reach mid 30s today for some areas. This is fatal temps for axolotl. Not only can the heat be fatal, it can also cause ammonia spikes and heighten the risks for bacterial septicaemia.
Options …. Pull your curtains, shut windows and run air conditioning, water changes can drop temps but at the moment tap water averages 20 degrees. A few cool packs or an ice bottle floating in you tank can lower the water 1 degree. Wet towels against the glass with a fan blowing on them can lower water temps 2 degrees. A fan blowing on the water surface can lower the temp slightly too. In an emergency axolotl can be tubbed for the day and placed in the coolest area of the house. Please be aware these temps are dangerous for people and other animals.

❌❌❌🛑🛑❗️❗️❗️Please note we are expecting 30+ degrees for the next 4 days. The temperatures will be extreme. ❌❌❌🛑🛑🛑❗️❗️❗️

Signs of heat stress in axolotl are listlessness, becoming pale, not eating and floating.
Extreme heat may also affect your tank cycle causing ammonia spikes which are deadly.
Extreme heat can cause bacterial septicaemia in axolotl.

Steps to take. Try pulling curtains, running air con and fans. Wet towels can be placed against the glass with a fan on them to lower temps. You can freeze tank water in large soda bottles or ice cream tubs and add to the tank.
In emergency remove your axolotl from your tank and tub it in the coolest part of your house. You can again have a fan blowing on the top of the water or add small ice bottles. Water needs changing daily with fresh dechlorinated water. If you are worried please ask. Unfortunately super hot days are not our friend.

A very special baby, I’m looking after for a friend. I’m also able to babysit your axolotl if you are off for a break and don’t wish to leave them at home alone.

Diet is a big part of axolotl health and welfare. Earthworms, pellets and we recommend repashy grub pie for convenience and easy feeding. www.repashy.co.nz
