SPCA Pets of the Year is back for another year! 📸

We’re on the search for the stars of our 2025 SPCA Calendars, and it’s time for the competition to begin! This year we have two calendar categories – cats and dogs 🐈🐕

Choose your favourite photo of your feline friend or canine companion, and use it to create a picture-pawfect profile over at www.spca.nz/poty24.

Share their profile with friends, family and colleagues and let the voting commence! Every vote raises vital funds for the thousands of animals that come into our care each year. All entries that raise $150 or more by the closing date is guaranteed a spot in the calendar too!

With some amazing prizes up for grabs from our sponsor OPPO New Zealand, dust off your camera and get snapping! Learn more at the link above.

*Calling out for large dog kennels!*
We are in desperate need of large kennels to help out our community in need.
Do you have one you no longer use and have it sitting in your back yard? Do you need a project over the school holidays? Have you seen one free on the side of the road?
We need them to be sturdy, water and wind tight, and in good condition.
We are able to pick up with a trailer if you need!
Thank you SPCA supporters - we appreciate you! ❤

This is the difference a loving foster home can make! 🥰

When we first met Dulux at our Christchurch Centre, he had a long list of problems... matted fur, eye crusting, damaged teeth, burns, a tail wound and clear signs of trauma to name a few 💔

After a lot of care and medical treatment from our team, Dulux went into foster care to improve his somewhat 'grouchy' attitude! We've heard that "his foster parent has taken great care of him, and socialised him from a scared and angry cat into such a loveable and snuggly dude."

Maybe we can celebrate this by finding Dulux his forever home? 😍 View his profile here: www.spca.nz/adopt/animal/598170/cat-dulux-christchurch

Are you missing your beloved family pet?? 😭

Did you know that any animals that come into the SPCA lost are listed on https://www.animalregister.co.nz/, on their lost pet site? By keeping an eye on here, you can see any incoming animals and increase your chances of finding your furry family member.
Pets like this boy here, who was found in Rangiora, who is desperately seeking his family to take him home and care for him! ❤

Did you know that New Zealand's ban on live exports by sea is under threat?

According to our survey, 63% of the New Zealand public aren't aware that the Government is planning to reverse our world-leading ban 😧 This would be a national embarrassment, and a huge step backwards for animal welfare in New Zealand.

Photographs taken on board live export ships show the horrific conditions these animals are forced to suffer through. Cramped spaces, standing in their own urine and faeces, many are subjected to extreme temperatures and suffer from heat stress.

There's less than three weeks left to sign the petition ❤️ Please speak up for the animals that can't speak for themselves by adding your name here: https://petitions.parliament.nz/79ff1ae2-f2e8-43c5-6c98-08dc33f5abe2

SUMO has been waiting for his forever home for a few months now, can you believe it! Not a single application!

Sumo can't help but make the Ashburton team smile! He has a talent for the most bizarre (yet adorable) sleeping poses and is a pro at lounging upside down! It's like he has taken a crash course in yoga for cats. Sumo enjoys scritches behind his ears and will purr with constant delight!

Don't let his relaxed demeanor fool you, he is a master of playtime, feather wands being his favorite!

The Ashburton team are on a mission to find this chunky dude the best forever home! Sumo would prefer a home without dogs or young children as he is not familiar with them.

If you think you can provide SUMO the comfiest bed he has ever lounged on please apply for him today!

Meet Sabrina,

This lovely girl has an inspiring story. Sabrina came into our care after inspectors found her tethered on a short chain without access to shelter or water. She was cowering in fear, and it took inspectors an hour to free her as she was so frightened.

Since coming into our care, she has really come out of her shell. She loves her walks in the forest and along the beach, where she can finally enjoy the freedom and adventure she deserves.

Sabrina will cast her spell over you. With a heart as big as hers, she is looking for someone to love and give her a place in their home. She can be a little shy when meeting new people, but once she knows you, she will give you endless amounts of love.

Sabrina is still learning how to play nicely with other dogs. She gets so excited to make new friends that she can be a bit over the top, but she is eager to learn. With someone willing to work with her, she'll be able to express her excitement correctly. Because of this, we think Sabrina will do better as an only dog but one that can have many doggy play dates.

When she's not zooming about, Sabrina loves human cuddles and playing around. She is learning fetch and is always up for a game of tug of war. If you think you could fall under this little girl's spell, please use the link below and apply to adopt Sabrina today!

Public service announcement: Timaru commercial boarding closure

From 1 July 2024, SPCA’s Timaru Centre will no longer offer commercial boarding to cat and dog owners in the local area.

This decision will free up significant and vital capacity for us to take in and care for abused, injured and vulnerable animals, including those who come in with our Inspectors. It enables us to refocus on our core purpose: being here for the animals who need us most.

Currently clients are being communicated with and we hope that the six-week notice period, and the change coming at the kennel’s quietest time of year, will allow pet owners needing cattery services to find alternative solutions.

Thank you to everyone who has entrusted us with the care of your furry friends over the years – it’s been an honour!

Happy Wednesday everyone!
We have beautiful Roosters up for adoption and our team have written a little bit about them.

Sir. Jamerson Peters
When he isn't saving damsels in distress, he likes nothing better than a bit of banter with the lads down at his local where everyone knows him as "Jim". He regales them of his tales of heroism and just as he starts to relax, he must once again have to be off for more heroic deeds! (His mates think this is an excuse to not pay his tab).

Axel
He fancies himself as a bit of a gourmet chef. He's applied to work in numerous kitchens only for there to always be a very awkward misunderstanding...
He's a very family oriented man and is always looking out for his little brother Blaze.

Blaze
He is a lot more relaxed about his food standards than his brother. He's happy pecking around any old grass, and doesn't even know what "an organge anick" is. (We think he means "organic"). None the less, he loves his brother, orange enthusiast or not.

Odin
This little fellow is a jazz enthusiast, and he's all about that skippity-bop lifestyle, often using beatnik slang. He wants to meet some "real cool cats" but here at the SPCA, we have advised against this. Despite not knowing what he's talking about most of the time, we can dig it.

Otto
This little guy wanted to be Ebenezer Scrooge so he could ruin everyone's year by reminding them of the inevitability of Christmas. We don't know what he has against Christmas, or where his desire to ruin people's year with that knowledge comes from, but apart from that he's a pretty nice little guy who likes a good hike.

"Yes, I'll have the fish of the day, and we'll get a bowl of water for the table. Thank you good sir."

This cutie named A.C is currently living the dream in foster care while waiting for her forever home in Christchurch. Thank you to her foster fam for showering her with love! ❤️

We always love having our SPCA Ambassador Chris Lynch along to visit us, and this week he met one of our amazing volunteers, plus one of the sweet pups in our care currently looking for a home ❤

New Zealand, this gorgeous girl needs your help!

A few weeks ago, you helped us to find a home for a horse in Kerikeri named Amos 🙌 With the search being such a success, we'd love your help to do the same for this beautiful girl in Christchurch.

Her name is Tequila Sunrise - and this weekend marks TWO YEARS that she's been waiting to be adopted 😔

At 21 years of age her riding days are behind her, but this lady has a calm and friendly demeanor, and would make a wonderful addition to your farm family ❤️ Do you have the land and the heart to give this deserving horse a home at long last?

View her profile here: https://www.spca.nz/adopt/animal/546808/horse-tequila-sunrise-christchurch and contact the Christchurch team with any questions on 03 349 7057. Please help Tequila by sharing this message far and wide!

SNIP ‘N’ CHIP COMES TO THE SOUTH ISLAND! ❤️

We are excited to be launching a new Snip ‘n’ Chip campaign for cat owners in Timaru, Oamaru, Dunedin, Gore, Balclutha, Alexandra, Wanaka, and other surrounding areas.

From 10 April 2024 we are working with local participating veterinary clinics to offer this service to cat owners who are struggling with the cost of desexing and microchipping.

Vouchers help those in need get their cat desexed and microchipped for $30.

PLEASE REMEMBER – a limited number of vouchers are available to help those who require financial assistance. Please, only get a voucher if you need one and intend to use it. In the past, we have noticed some vouchers were never used, or bookings were made with vet clinics and never attended. When this happens, it prevents someone else from using the voucher who might really need it.

Bookings are now OPEN! Head over to https://book.spcadesexing.nz/ to check if vouchers are available in your area and register for your Snip ‘n’ Chip voucher. If you know someone who needs assistance with the online system, you can help by completing the registration with them.

Thank you so much to our participating vet clinics, and Dunedin City Council, for helping us to make this important campaign possible.

For more information, check out our dedicated desexing website www.spcadesexing.nz.

Dog owners ⚠️ - please ensure that your dogs' flea and tick treatment is up to date. A dog in the Canterbury region was recently euthanised after being infected by 'babesia gibsoni', a tick-borne parasite not previously found in New Zealand.

Once contracted, the parasite can be spread through dog bites, blood transfusions, and the placenta from an infected mother to her puppies.

Read more information below:

After becoming "extremely" sick with a parasite never before found in NZ-bred dogs, the animal was put down, and owners are being warned.

Calling all animal lovers with a heart for the big ones!

Are you ready to open your home and heart to our larger-than-life furry friends? Our SPCA is seeking dedicated foster parents for our lovable large animals, including sheep, goats, horses, mini horses, cows, and pigs!

Fostering these animals is not just an act of kindness; it's an incredible opportunity to make a lasting impact on their lives. Many of these animals have never experienced the comforts of a loving environment and are eager to learn.

As a foster parent, you'll provide a safe and nurturing environment, while we cover all food and vet bills. Your role is vital in helping these animals transition into their forever homes, and the rewards are immeasurable. From seeing their personalities blossom to witnessing their gratitude, fostering is a truly fulfilling experience.

If you have the experience and facilities to accommodate our large animals, we urge you to consider becoming a foster parent today. Together, we can make a difference, one paw, hoof, or snout at a time!

Interested? Reach out to us today at [email protected] to learn more about our fostering program and how you can get involved. Let's give these animals the love and care they deserve!
